Book Jewish Traditions in Early Christian Literature Volume 1 Paul and the Jewish Law

Download or read book Jewish Traditions in Early Christian Literature Volume 1 Paul and the Jewish Law written by Peter Tomson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While interest in Paul's relationship to Judaism has been growing recently, this study adds an important aspect by comparing Paul’s practical instruction with the ancient halakha or Jewish traditional law. First Corinthians is found to be a source of prime importance, and surprisingly, halakha appears to be basic to Paul's instruction for non-Jewish Christians. The book includes thorough discussion of hermeneutic and methodological implications, always viewed in relation to the history of Pauline and Judaic study. Attention is also being paid to the setting within Hellenistic culture. Finally, conclusions are drawn about the texture of Paul's thought and these are applied to two ‘theological’ passages decisive for his place in Judaism. Historical and theological implications are vast, both regarding Paul's relationship to Judaism, his attitude towards Jesus and his Apostles, and the meaning of his teaching concerning justification and the Law.

Book Daniel

    Book Details:
  • Author : Norman Porteous
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1979
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Daniel written by Norman Porteous and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an excellent and up-to-date commentary on Daniel that can be unreservedly commended. There is a good, though brief, introduction, in which especial attention is paid to the discussion of the literary affinities of Daniel. The original translation takes account of all relevant recent work, while the commentary is full and first class. The author has read and digested a considerable amount of modern literature on Daniel and brought to it his own careful and balanced judgement. His critical positions are rarely new, but in the reviewer's opinion they are sound - and sound judgement is better than novelty! On many of the problems of the book an incredible amount has been written, expressing an enormous variety of opinions. Professor Porteous is not concerned with the history of interpretation, and contents himself with a brief treatment of such questions, presenting his own considered view or suspending judgement where a decision between competing views cannot be made with confidence ... More important than all such matters is the religious and theological value of the book, and it is his attention to this that gives Professor Porteous's commentary its special quality, and makes it a notable addition to the series for which it has been written' (Society for Old Testament Study Book List).

Book Nearly All and Almost Everything

Download or read book Nearly All and Almost Everything written by Mitzi DeWhitt and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2005 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This musicological study, by persuasive explanation, shows how, adhering to certain exact ratios and proportions, music gains objective power. The inquiry is scientific, the solutions ingenious. Following unexplored and unconventional lines, the author brings together what, on the surface, appear to be three separate lines: Judaism, Hinduism, and the Gurdjieff Work. Their link is musical harmonics, or the magical science of connection between sounds. The failure of modern musicians to achieve the magical effects long ascribed to music by the ancients is due to the prevailing ignorance of those who know nothing about the objective laws on which music is based. Ancient cultures knew how the laws of harmonics (or what comes in between the tones) could evoke metaphysical correspondences of a spiritual nature, as did Gurdjieff. The Hebrews encoded harmonics in their Tree of Life diagram, the Hindus incorporated the potent musical information in a secretive "Music of the Path," and Gurdjieff enshrined it in the Enneagram symbol of the Work. In this groundbreaking book, the author presents a provocative and engaging picture of how these laws work. The wealth of new information will have a profound impact on modern views of music and its laws.

Book 4Q Pesher Nahum

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gregory Doudna
  • Publisher : Sheffield Academic Press
  • Release : 2001
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 824 pages

Download or read book 4Q Pesher Nahum written by Gregory Doudna and published by Sheffield Academic Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 4Q Pesher Nahum has long been considered one of the most important Qumran texts for understanding the historical context of the Scrolls. Doudna's comprehensive critical edition presents new readings and undertakes extensive analysis and reconstruction of broken text. Areas of focus include text-critical implications, scribal practices, and formal and composition patterns common throughout the Qumran pesharim. An outcome of this work sure to attract attention is its demonstration that the mysterious 'Lion of Wrath' figure of the text is not the Hasmonaean king Alexander Jannaeus, as almost universally held. Rather, Pesher Nahum portrays a coming conquest from the 'Kittim', and the 'Lion of Wrath' is a Nebuchadnezzar-like foreign invader coming to deliver the wrath of God on a sinful Israel. There is also an Appendix: 'Was Hyrcanus II the Teacher of Righteousness and Were the Scrolls Deposited in the Caves near Qumran in 40 bce?'
