Book Identification of Habitats Important to the Blue Whale in the Western North Atlantic

Download or read book Identification of Habitats Important to the Blue Whale in the Western North Atlantic written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) assessed the Atlantic blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) population as Endangered in 2002, and reaffirmed this status in 2012. The Species at Risk Program has requested Science advice on available information and the current state of knowledge about the habitat of blue whales in the northwest Atlantic. Specifically, the best available information on the habitat requirements of the population was requested, including a description of the habitat properties needed for successful completion of the life cycle processes necessary for survival and recovery of blue whales, a description of the functions, features and attributes of this habitat, the spatial extent of the areas likely to have these habitat properties, and the activities likely to destroy these habitat properties in the areas identified"--Context, p. Book Marine Protected Areas for Whales Dolphins and Porpoises

Download or read book Marine Protected Areas for Whales Dolphins and Porpoises written by Erich Hoyt and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2012 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Erich Hoyt's handbook is an admirable, timely and highly welcome contribution.'Michael Stachowitsch, Marine EcologyWhat does it mean to save the whales if their habitat is left unprotected? Marine Protected Areas for Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises is the definitive handbook on this pressing issue and the first to bridge the gap between the disciplines of marine protected areas and cetacean conservation. It launches a new chapter in cetacean conservation with its investigation into the crucial habitat needs and protection requirements of some 84 species. The author, one of the world's foremost experts in this field, takes you around the world to investigate the promising results of the latest conservation research and the strategies for obtaining marine protected areas in coastal waters and on the high seas, using national legislation and regional and international conventions. This is an essential introduction, guide and reference work for those working to ensure a future for whales and dolphins.

Book Characterizing the Habitat and Diving Behavior of Satellite tagged Blue Whales Balaenoptera Musculus Off California

Download or read book Characterizing the Habitat and Diving Behavior of Satellite tagged Blue Whales Balaenoptera Musculus Off California written by Ladd Irvine and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was designed to identify and characterize areas of concentrated use and diving behavior of blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) off the California coast. During the summer of 2004, thirteen blue whales were tagged with implantable Telonics ST-15 Argos satellite-monitored radio tags and five were tagged with Telonics ST-21 Argos satellite-monitored depth of dive tags. Tag duration averaged 100 d with a total of 2159 locations recorded. Whales generally remained near the continental slope and were most often found at the west end of the Santa Barbara Channel, near the Gulf of the Farallones, or between Cape Mendocino and Cape Blanco. Analysis of the 95% kernel density distributions of whale locations showed a one degree increase in sea surface temperature (SST) was correlated with a decrease in whale density by 7% (p

Book North Atlantic Ocean Habitats Important to the Conservation of North Atlantic Right Whales Eubalanea Glacialis

Download or read book North Atlantic Ocean Habitats Important to the Conservation of North Atlantic Right Whales Eubalanea Glacialis written by Richard M. Pace and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We provide a spatial and temporal description of the habitats important to the conservation of North Atlantic right whales (Eubalaena glacialis) in US waters of the Northwest Atlantic Ocean. This analysis is based on the premise that the biological and physical feature of habitat essential to the conservation of right whales in this region (i.e., the primary constituent element [PCE] which a species needs to survive and reproduce) is the presence of dense patches of calanoid copepods (notably Calanus finmarchicus). Despite the general importance of copepods to the marine food web of the region, only limited data are available to map the distribution of dense copepod patches that constitute the PCE for foraging right whales. Hence, we used right whale foraging areas as a proxy for the spatial locations of these patches. Based on systematic sighting surveys for right whales conducted from 1970 through 2005, we identified concentrations of foraging right whales in US Atlantic waters north of 40° N latitude. These data were then used to define Dynamic Area Management (DAM) zones, which indicated that most of the area north of the Great South Channel on Georges Bank was used at least seasonally for foraging. This region included seasonal foraging subareas generally identified as Cape Cod Bay, Great South Channel, Northern Edge of Georges Bank, Western Gulf of Maine, Wilkinson Basin, and Jordan Basin. Wilkinson and Jordan Basins are also considered essential to the conservation of right whales because these two basins are source areas for the dense copepod concentrations upon which right whales prey in US Northwest Atlantic waters"--Publication's home page.

Book Marine Protected Areas for Whales Dolphins and Porpoises

Download or read book Marine Protected Areas for Whales Dolphins and Porpoises written by Erich Hoyt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of the widely praised Marine Protected Areas for Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises, published in 2005, led to numerous new marine protected area proposals and a number of notable conservation successes around the world. In this completely revised and expanded second edition, new developments in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and Pacific are described, as well as future directions for High Seas protection. New sections show how to design and manage MPAs in an ever noisier ocean subject to climate change, increased shipping and hydrocarbon exploration. The process of protected area creation for cetaceans has been accelerated and more than 200 exciting new places are detailed in this edition. This book provides a route map for MPA managers, as well as countries, to meet the ambitious targets for highly protected MPA networks by 2012 and 2020. This book is a key conservation tool and a springboard for worldwide change in human attitudes toward the world ocean where all life originated and where the majority of life on Earth still lives.
