Book excerpt: Black bear (Ursus americanus) are an ecologically significant and economically important species and in Michigan their population is increasing and expanding geographically. Harvest data and nuisance and sighting reports indicate bears concentrate in certain areas within the northern Lower Peninsula (NLP). A distinct area of apparent concentration is within a collection of private-lands historically referred to as 'club country.' While previous studies have attributed the concentration of bears to wildlife-oriented management practiced throughout much of club country, no research has explicitly measured if bears do indeed exist in this area at a higher density or if these managed lands are in fact highly suitable for black bear. The 101 km2 Turtle Lake Club (TLC), located in the heart of club country in the northeastern portion of the NLP served as the study area. ... Concentrations of black bear within club country are generally attributed wildlife-oriented management practices which are thought to have improved habitat suitability for black bear. I developed a cover-type-scale habitat suitability index (HSI) model for evaluating seasonal habitat requirements for black bear. The HSI model assessed suitability based on the life requisites for black bear in the upper great lakes region (UGLR) through ground habitat sampling. Habitat suitability scores ranged from 0.02- 1.00 between cover types and from 0.65-1.00 for seasonal food scores. Our model indicated the study area provided moderate to highly suitable habitat for black bear year-round. Scores assigned to the study area were comparable to or higher than estimates previously reported for the UGLR. Estimated HSI scores were similar to managed/highly productive areas. Book Ecology and Behaviour of North American Black Bears

Download or read book Ecology and Behaviour of North American Black Bears written by Roger A. Powell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What main factors affect mammalian home range size and dynamics? To what extent do constraints on home range characteristics vary between the sexes? This book aims to address these issues by concentrating the authors' expertise and experience in studies of home ranges in general and focusing on their studies of black bears of the Pisgah Forest, North Carolina, in particular. The authors provide an overview of the black bears and methods for their study before discussing concepts of home range, developing predictive habitat quality models, addressing influences of food production on social organization and exploring the mating behaviour of male bears.

Book Urban Black Bear ursus Americanus Habitat Use and Population Dynamics in Northern New Mexico

This book was released on 2017 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflicts between humans and black bears (Ursus americanus) have increased in the recent decades, due to both human encroachment on wildlife habitats and anthropogenic attractions in urban areas. However, there is little research on how dependent urban wildlife are on anthropogenic food items. In this study, I assessed the magnitude of the urban bear problem by determining their abundance and movement in comparison with rural bear populations and the impact of weather in human-induced bear mortality. Using scat as a proxy for abundance and movement, I found more fresh scat within city limits than outside city limits (t=6.9, df=13, p=0.00001), and more degraded scat within the city limits (t=2.5, df=7, p=0.04). No fresh scat was found after the month of September, and no degraded scat found after early November. The highest number of dumpster disturbances/day were recorded in September (0.73disturbances/day) with a sharp drop in the number of disturbances after early November. My molecular census found a total of seven different individual bears in Raton, two of which seem to be male half-siblings. Two sows were collared within the city limits of both Raton and Las Vegas, NM. Both sows exploited the city limits resources and migrated out presumably to forage on fall mast. Using state DWR records, there was a significant correlation between total bear mortality and annual precipitation of the current and previous year, F=ll. 138, R2 = 0.481 with p=0.006. Annual average Net Primary Productivity (NPP) of the current year and two previous years also has a significant correlation with total bear mortality, F= ll. 449, R2= 0.534, and p=0.007. My results suggest that bears in Raton are not a permanent population. The local bear populations use the city and its resources as a seasonal subsidy to their diet when natural food becomes scarce. All types of bear mortality are correlated with annual precipitation and NPP which could be used as a tool by management agencies, especially in the face of drought, to predict future bear-human encounters and bear mortalities in the state of New Mexico.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American black bear (Ursus americanus) of north central Utah occupies a habitat used for livestock grazing, logging, heavy recreational uses, and human habitation. We began this study in 1985 to determine the food habits, habitat use patterns, home range sizes, productivity, and general health of this population. Grasses and forbs provided the bulk of the spring diets. Animal matter was also a major component of their yearly diet. Litter size averaged 1.7 cubs per adult female during the 10 years of this study. Home range sizes for males was 3 times larger than for females. Five subadult males dispersed from our study area over distances ranging from 12 miles (20 km) to 57 miles (91 km). All were dead within 3 years. The purpose of this study was to answer basic questions and provide management recommendations to ensure the Hobble Creek-Diamond Fork black bear population will endure for many, many years. These black bears live near a human population of 200,000 and stay almost conflict-free. We explored reasons why they stay good neighbors.
