Book Body Condition and Survival of Desert Bighorn Sheep in Relation to Habitat and Precipitation on the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge Arizona

Download or read book Body Condition and Survival of Desert Bighorn Sheep in Relation to Habitat and Precipitation on the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge Arizona written by Matthew W. Overstreet and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To assess the influence of potential limiting factors on female desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis mexicana) on the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge (KNWR), I modeled percent body fat of adult females as a function of previous year's reproductive effort, age class, and forage conditions (i.e., seasonal NDVI and seasonal precipitation). In addition, I assessed the relative influence of the body condition of adult females, precipitation, and forage conditions (NDVI) on number of days a lamb was observed at heel. I assessed the relationship between adult body fat and the previous year's home range size (95% kernel and 50% core use home range km2). I monitored 34 female sheep from November 2009 to November 2010. I used an information-theoretic approach to evaluate support for my a priori models. Models containing the previous year's reproductive effort and spring NDVI best approximated my data. The second best model included the previous year's reproductive effort and spring precipitation. I monitored 41 females from November 2010-2011. The highest-ranking model included the previous year's reproductive effort and winter NDVI. The second-ranked model include previous year's reproductive effort, and winter and spring NDVI. Home-range models were evaluated based on east and west sides of the refuge due to an elevation gradient that had the potential to influence forage production for bighorn sheep. Adult females on the west side of the refuge (n = 33) had a positive association between percent body fat and the size of the core areas during spring. Adult females on the east side of the refuge (n = 12) had a negative association between percent body fat and home range and core area size during spring.

Book Status and Habitat Preference of California Bighorn Sheep on Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge Nevada

Download or read book Status and Habitat Preference of California Bighorn Sheep on Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge Nevada written by Michael Charles Hansen and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A herd of California bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis californiana), re-introduced to the area of Hell Creek on the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern Nevada, was studied from 15 June 1978 to 20 August 1980. Major vegetation and physiographic types were delineated and described. Habitat preferences were determined from field observations of sheep use of both vegetation and physiographic habitat components. Sheep displayed preference in their use of habitat components during all seasons; greatest selection was shown by the ewe/ lamb band for physiographic types associated with escape cover in spring, and for vegetation types associated with quality forage in winter. Rams generally displayed less selective habitat use than did the ewe/lamb band. The population was relatively stable at 30-35 individuals, following the initial post-introduction period of rapid growth. It was hypothesized that high quality lambing terrain was limited in quantity within the present ewe/lamb range, and that expansion of the ewe/lamb range to include the nearby Boulder Spring and Virgin Canyon areas would promote substantial population increase. Water was available during all seasons. Spring use of mineral licks may have been related to seasonal mineral deficiency associated with tissue and/or milk production. Activity patterns suggested that sheep adapted their daily activities to fit local, seasonal situations.
