Download or read book New Mexico Vegetation written by William A. Dick-Peddie and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993 and now available for the first time in paperback, this book remains one of the few authoritative vegetation compilations for a western state. It is the first comprehensive study of the biological history and evolution of New Mexico's vegetation and includes a detailed account of the distribution of plant communities in the state today. Discussed are the following major types of vegetation: tundra and coniferous forest, woodland and savanna, grassland, scrubland, riparian, and wetlands. For each type, information is provided on the principal plant species. In addition, for each vegetation type special attention is given to describing how plants sharing a common location interact and, in particular, how human activity impacts on each type. Much of New Mexico's vegetation is in some stage of succession as a result of human-initiated disturbances such as fire, logging, and livestock grazing. The book ends with a detailed description of species of special concern and what is being done to preserve examples of vegetation types within the state. A map of the state's vegetation, including types not found on existing maps, accompanies the book. The classifications of vegetation employed here are easily recognizable in the field, which makes them of greater use to the public as well as to resource managers, researchers, and students.

Book Mountain Sheep of North America

Download or read book Mountain Sheep of North America written by Raul Valdez and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mountain sheep epitomize wilderness for many people because they occupy some of the most inaccessible and rugged habitats known to man, from desert crags to alpine mountains. But of all hoofed mammals in North America, wild sheep present the greatest management problems to biologists. This book is a major reference on the natural history, ecology, and management of wild sheep in North America. Written by wildlife biologists who have devoted years of study to the animals, it covers Dall's and Stone's sheep and Rocky Mountain, California, and desert bighorn and examines a variety of factors pertinent to their life histories: habitat, diet, activity, social organization, reproduction, and population dynamics. Additional chapters consider distribution and abundance, adaptive strategies, and management guidelines. Discussions on diseases of wild sheep present a wealth of information that will be of particular use to wildlife biologists, including detailed clinical descriptions of conditions that threaten sheep populations, from pasteurellosis to capture myopathy. An appendix reviews the cytogenetics and genetics of wild sheep. North American wild sheep may face extinction in many areas unless critical questions concerning their management are answered soon. Prior to the publication of this book, there was no single reference available in which one could find such a synthesis of information. Mountain Sheep of North America provides that source and points toward the preservation of these magnificent wild creatures.

Book Evaluation of the Peloncillo and Alamo Hueco Mountains New Mexico as Potential Desert Bighorn Habitat

Download or read book Evaluation of the Peloncillo and Alamo Hueco Mountains New Mexico as Potential Desert Bighorn Habitat written by Andrew V. Sandoval and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, and the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish initiated studies to determine which areas of historic desert bighorn sheep (Ovis Canadensis Mexicana) range in New Mexico have the highest potential for the re-establishment of bighorn populations, and to evaluate and rank selected areas in order of suitability as desert bighorn habitat. This study consists of two phases. In Phase I, 16 historic bighorn sheep ranges were qualitatively evaluated in order of suitability as bighorn habitat. In Phase II, the Peloncillo and Alamo Hueco Mountains were quantitatively described in terms of size, topography, vegetation, water availability and human use.
