Book Challenges to Marine Ecosystems

Download or read book Challenges to Marine Ecosystems written by John Davenport and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-01-29 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a representative sample of contributions to the 41st European Marine Biology Symposium held in September 2005 in Cork, Ireland. The theme of the symposium was ‘Challenges to Marine Ecosystems’ and this was divided into four sub themes; Genetics, Marine Protected Areas, Global Climate Change and Marine Ecosystems, Sustainable Fisheries and Agriculture. The world’s marine ecosystems face multiple challenges, some natural, but many resulting from humankind’s activities. Global climate change, driven by influences of energy usage and industrial practices, is a reality now accepted by most of the world’s scientists, media and political establishments. Warming seas and rising sea levels are regarded as threats, while visionaries consider deep ocean carbon disposal as a technological opportunity. Exploitation of the seas continues apace, with repeated concerns over the impact of over-fishing, plus reservations about the environmental effects of marine aquaculture. We need to understand how resilient organisms and ecosystems are to these challenges, while responding by protecting biologically-meaningful areas of the oceans. The subthemes of the 41st European Marine Biology Symposium address all of these matters.

Book Seabed Habitats and Hazards of the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf and Timor Sea Northern Australia

Download or read book Seabed Habitats and Hazards of the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf and Timor Sea Northern Australia written by Rachel Przeslawski and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Joseph Bonaparte Gulf and Timor Sea region (JBG-TS) is an area of significance for multiple resource needs, from marine planning to offshore industry development. As such, information on seabed environments in this region is of interest to both industry and marine management. Geoscience Australia is focussed on the collation and preparation of regional pre-competitive environmental datasets, the outputs of which can be used for pre and post-bid environmental assessments and for emergency response planning. This report provides a spatial synthesis of seabed environments for the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf and Timor Sea region (JBG-TS) by identifying and describing significant habitats, communities, and potential geohazards. Data are sourced from existing literature, including publicly available industry data, as well as data collected from two seabed mapping surveys to the Van Diemen Rise in the eastern Timor Sea (GA-322 and GA-325)." -- Online abstract.

Book The Marine Microbiome

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lucas J. Stal
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2016-06-03
  • ISBN : 3319330004
  • Pages : 501 pages

Download or read book The Marine Microbiome written by Lucas J. Stal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the state-of-the-art concerning the ‘marine microbiome’ and its uses in biotechnology. The first part discusses the diversity and ecology of marine microorganisms and viruses, including all three domains of life: Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya. It discusses whether marine microorganisms exist and, if so, why they might be unique. The second part presents selected marine habitats, their inhabitants and how they influence biogeochemical cycles, while the third discusses the utilization of marine microbial resources, including legal aspects, dissemination, and public awareness. The marine microbiome is the total of microorganisms and viruses in the ocean and seas and in any connected environment, including the seafloor and marine animals and plants. The diversity of microbial life remains unquantified and largely unknown, and could represent a hidden treasure for human society. Accordingly, this book is also intended to connect academics and industry, providing essential information for microbiologists from both fields.

Book Tides Surges and Mean Sea Level

Download or read book Tides Surges and Mean Sea Level written by D. T. Pugh and published by . This book was released on 1987-12-28 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to present modern tidal ideas to those who are not tidal specialists, but for whom some knowledge of tides is involved in their professional or scientific field. These include hydrographers, marine and coastal engineers, geologists who specialize in beach or marine sedimentation processes, and biologists concerned with the ways in which living organisms adapt to the rhythms of the sea. Modern practical studies are concerned with problems of marine transport, coastal erosion and the design of coastal defences against flooding. Interest in mean sea-level changes has recently been focused on the possibility of significant increases over the coming century as a result of global warming. Examples of applications from North America, Europe and other parts of the world are included.

Book The Geology of the Irish Sea

Download or read book The Geology of the Irish Sea written by D. I. Jackson and published by Balogh Scientific Books. This book was released on 1995 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report covers the area of the Irish Sea between the North Channel and St George's Channel. A wide range of geological features are studied. For example, the channel is thought to contain rocks from the geological systems, ranging from the Precambrian schists and gneisses to Cretaceous chalk and Paleogene basalts. Offshore, Carboniferous and permo-Triassic strata dominate, and have considerable economic interest. The Carboniferous rocks contain coal and advances in technology may renew commercial interest offshore. The report also provides insights into sedimentary processes at work in the Irish Sea. The adjacent land areas include a number of major conurbations, all of which discharge effluent into the sea.

Book Global Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms

Download or read book Global Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms written by Patricia M. Glibert and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harmful algal blooms (HABs) - blooms that cause fish kills, contaminate seafood with toxins, or cause human or ecological health impacts and harm to local economies - are occurring more often, in more places and lasting longer than in past decades. This expansion is primarily the result of human activities, through increased nutrient inputs and various aspects of climate change. The Global Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms (GEOHAB) programme promoted international collaboration to understand HAB population dynamics in various oceanographic regimes and to improve the prediction of HABs. This volume introduces readers to the overarching framework of the GEOHAB programme, factors contributing to the global expansion of harmful algal blooms, the complexities of HABs in different habitats, and the forward-looking issues to be tackled by the next generation of GEOHAB, GlobalHAB. The programme brought together an international team of contributing scientists and ecosystem managers, and its outcomes will greatly benefit the international research community.
