Book Microhabitat Associations and Behavioral Dynamics of Co occurring Native Pacifastacus Leniusculus and Invasive Procambarus Clarkii Crayfish in Oregon s Southern Willamette Valley

Download or read book Microhabitat Associations and Behavioral Dynamics of Co occurring Native Pacifastacus Leniusculus and Invasive Procambarus Clarkii Crayfish in Oregon s Southern Willamette Valley written by Brett Alan Hanshew and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological invasions are the second largest threat to biodiversity following habitat loss, and studying invasions has been a focus of ecological the past two decades. Despite the intense research, many basic questions remain empirically unanswered, particularly in the realm of behavior. The purpose of this research was to explore the interaction between native and invasive competitors at multiple scales in experimental and field settings. Using the native signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) and invasive red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) in Oregon's Southern Willamette Valley, we experimentally explored one-on-one aggression and dominance relationships and group shelter occupancy in mesocosms, while we performed a survey to determine field microhabitat associations. In our one-on-one aggression and dominance experiment, we tested agonistic relationships based on differences in species, size and sex. We found that aggression is affected more by similarity or dissimilarity in sex between opponents than by any other factor, and that while species or size difference did not affect aggression, they did affect the degree of dominance between opponents. In our mesocosm experiment, we observed patterns of shelter occupancy and microhabitat use based on species composition and shelter density. When alone, invasive red swamp crayfish used shelter infrequently, regardless of shelter density, while native signal crayfish used shelter in a density-dependent pattern. In mixed species treatments, signal crayfish did not alter their shelter use patterns compared to single species treatments, while red swamp crayfish patterns of shelter use were identical to those of the signal crayfish: they changed shelter occupancy from a density-independent response when alone to a density-dependent response in the presence of signal crayfish. Furthermore, patterns of microhabitat use paralleled the shelter occupancy patterns, yielding a narrow suite of microhabitats for native signal crayfish and a broad suite of microhabitats for invasive red swamp crayfish. In our field survey, we employed an epicenter-based design at two regional field sites and performed visual snorkel surveys to detect crayfish. Both field sites were in systems impacted by urban development and agriculture. Red swamp crayfish were more abundant, found at more field sites, and used a broader range of microhabitats than signal crayfish. Cohesively, our results indicate that red swamp crayfish and signal crayfish do not differ in aggression or dominance, that behavior mediates changes in microhabitat use across environmental and community contexts, that factors other than behavior are important in determining the composition of crayfish assemblages, and that changes in habitat are likely to synergistically aid the spread of invasive red swamp crayfish at the expense of native signal crayfish.

Book Molecular Approaches to the Study of the Ocean

Download or read book Molecular Approaches to the Study of the Ocean written by K.E. Cooksey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine biological science is now studied at the molecular level and although research scientists depend on information gained using molecular techniques, there is no book explaining the philosophy of this approach. Molecular Approaches to the Study of the Ocean introduces the reasons why molecular technology is such a powerful tool in the study of the oceans, describing the types of techniques that can be used, why they are useful and gives examples of their application. Molecular biological techniques allow phylogenetic relationships to be explored in a manner that no macroscopic method can; although the book deals with organisms near the base of the marine food web, the ideas can be used in studies of macroorganisms as well as those in freshwater environments.

Download or read book Yvain written by Chretien de Troyes and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1987-09-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelfth-century French poet Chrétien de Troyes is a major figure in European literature. His courtly romances fathered the Arthurian tradition and influenced countless other poets in England as well as on the continent. Yet because of the difficulty of capturing his swift-moving style in translation, English-speaking audiences are largely unfamiliar with the pleasures of reading his poems. Now, for the first time, an experienced translator of medieval verse who is himself a poet provides a translation of Chrétien’s major poem, Yvain, in verse that fully and satisfyingly captures the movement, the sense, and the spirit of the Old French original. Yvain is a courtly romance with a moral tenor; it is ironic and sometimes bawdy; the poetry is crisp and vivid. In addition, the psychological and the socio-historical perceptions of the poem are of profound literary and historical importance, for it evokes the emotions and the values of a flourishing, vibrant medieval past.

Book excerpt: The indiscriminate use of medications and their inadequate disposal have resulted in them being released into the environment via municipal, hospital and industrial discharges. This volume critically examines the presence of pharmaceuticals in aquatic ecosystems, the hazards they entail, and how to minimize their impact on the environment. The topics covered include: historical findings that have made the development of the discipline ecopharmacovigilance possible; the main exposure routes, fate and life cycle of pharmaceuticals in water; occurrence data and the impact on biodiversity; methods used for the detection, analysis and quantification of pharmaceuticals in water and for their removal; current legislation on the presence of emerging contaminants in water; biosensors for environmental analysis and monitoring; and the measures needed to reduce the existing problems. This book is aimed at students, academics and research workers in the fields of toxicology, ecology, microbiology and chemistry, as well as those in the pharmaceutical industry, health sector professionals, and members of government bodies involved in environmental protection and legislation.

Book Wildlife Responses to Climate Change

Download or read book Wildlife Responses to Climate Change written by Stephen H. Schneider and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-04-10 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wildlife Responses to Climate Change is the culmination of a three-year project to research and study the impacts of global climate change on ecosystems and individual wildlife species in North America. In 1997, the National Wildlife Federation provided fellowships to eight outstanding graduate students to conduct research on global climate change, and engaged leading climate change experts Stephen H. Schneider and Terry L. Root to advise and guide the project. This book presents the results, with chapters describing groundbreaking original research by some of the brightest young scientists in America. The book presents case studies that examine: ways in which local and regional climate variables affect butterfly populations and habitat ranges how variations in ocean temperatures have affected intertidal marine species the potential effect of reduced snow cover on plants in the Rocky Mountains the potential effects of climate change on the distribution of vegetation in the United States how climate change may increase the susceptibility of ecosystems to invasions of non-native species the potential for environmental change to alter interactions between a variety of organisms in whitebark pine communities of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem Also included are two introductory chapters by Schneider and Root that discuss the rationale behind the project and offer an overview of climate change and its implications for wildlife. Each of the eight case studies provides important information about how biotic systems respond to climatic variables, and how a changing climate may affect biotic systems in the future. They also acknowledge the inherent complexities of problems likely to arise from changes in climate, and demonstrate the types of scientific questions that need to be explored in order to improve our understanding of how climate change and other human disturbances affect wildlife and ecosystems. Wildlife Responses to Climate Change is an important addition to the body of knowledge critical to scientists, resource managers, and policymakers in understanding and shaping solutions to problems caused by climate change. It provides a useful resource for students and scientists studying the effects of climate change on wildlife and will assist resource managers and other wildlife professionals to better understand factors affecting the species they are striving to conserve.

Download or read book Wildlife Ecotoxicology written by John E. Elliott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-27 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books have now been published in the broad field of environmental toxicology. However, to date, none of have presented the often fascinating stories of the wildlife science, and the steps along the way from discovery of problems caused by environmental pollutants to the regulatory and non-regulatory efforts to address the problems. This book provides case by case examinations of how toxic chemical effects on wildlife have brought about policy and regulatory decisions, and positive changes in environmental conditions. Wild animal stories, whether they are about the disappearance of charismatic top predators, or of grossly deformed embryos or frogs, provide powerful symbols that can and have captured the public's imagination and have resulted in increased awareness by decision makers. It is the intent of this book to present factual and balanced overviews and summaries of the science and the subsequent regulatory processes that followed to effect change (or not). We cover a variety of chemicals and topics beginning with an update of the classic California coastal DDT story of eggshell thinning and avian reproduction to more recent cases, such as the veterinarian pharmaceutical that has brought three species of Asian vultures to the brink of extinction. Researchers, regulators, educators, NGOs and the general public will find valuable insights into the processes and mechanisms involved both in environmental scientific investigation and in efforts to effect positive change.
