Este libro tiene su origen en la investigación doctoral de la autora sobre la escritura científica de los profesores universitarios colombianos, que estuvo orientada por las siguientes preguntas: ¿cómo inició la escritura científica? ¿Qué significa realmente escribir científicamente? ¿Qué dicen los expertos sobre la escritura científica? ¿Tengo habilidades para escribir textos científicos? ¿Qué habilidades debo mejorar en mi escritura? Luego de hacer un breve recuento de los inicios de la escritura científica a nivel mundial, la autora propone una serie de procedimientos para la redacción de artículos científicos, ofrece recursos lingüísticos y discursivos para el proceso de escritura, introduce algunas movidas retóricas y aspectos estilísticos propios del género, y finaliza con una reflexión sobre la importancia de la lectura en la escritura académica. La obra invita a los interesados en la escritura a reflexionar, analizar y planear este quehacer científico fundamental mediante la identificación de las habilidades cognitivas necesarias para ejecutarlo de manera exitosa.

Book excerpt: The growing importance of the sciences in industrialised societies has been acknowledged by the increasing number of studies concerned with their development, change and control. In the past 20 or so years there has been a considerable growth in teaching and research programmes dealing with science and technology policy, science and society, sociology and history of science and similar areas which has resulted in much new material about the production and validation of scientific knowledge. In addition to the quanti tative growth of this literature, there has also been a substantial shift in the problems addressed and approaches adopted. In particular, the substantive content of scientific knowledge has become the focus of many historical and sociological studies which seek to understand how knowledges develop and change in different social circumstances. Instead of taking the privileged epistemological status of scientific knowledge for granted, recent approaches have emphasised the socially contingent nature of knowledge production and validation and the pluralistic nature of the sciences. Parallel to these develop ments, there has been a shift in the treatment of science by the state, business and public pressure groups. Increasingly they have sought to control the direction of research, and thus the content of knowledge, directly rather than simply applying existing knowledge. Science has become amenable to social control and influence. Its sacred status has declined and it is increasingly viewed as a socially constituted phenomenon which can be studied in a similar manner to other cultural products.

Book excerpt: Academic autonomy has been a dominant issue among Latin American social studies, given that the production of knowledge in the region has been mostly suspected for its lack of originality and the replication of Euro-American models. Politicization within the higher education system and recurrent military interventions in universities have been considered the main structural causes for this heteronomy and, thus, the main obstacles for 'scientific' achievements. This groundbreaking book analyses the struggle for academic autonomy taking into account the relevant differences between the itinerary of social and natural sciences, the connection of institutionalization and prestige-building, professionalization and engagement. From the perspective of the periphery, academic dependence is not merely a vertical bond that ties active producers and passive reproducers. Even though knowledge produced in peripheral communities has low rates of circulation within the international academic system, this doesn't imply that their production is - or always has been - the result of a massive import of foreign concepts and resources. This book intends to show that the main differences between mainstream academies and peripheral circuits are not precisely in the lack of indigenous thinking, but in the historical structure of academic autonomy, which changes according to a set of factors -mainly the role of the state in the higher education system. This historical structure explains the particular features of the process of professionalization in Latin American scientific fields.
