Book excerpt: Saleh’s love and respect for his mother, Hamsatu, is not only detrimental to his own life but also injurious to his family life. Hamsatu makes all the decisions in his life. She becomes despotic and decides who her son, Saleh, should marry, and the type of children his wife should bear. Habiba is just thirteen when her grandmother, Hamsatu brings in a suitor, Zubairu, a contemporary of her late husband. Although Saleh wishes to send all his children to school, a rainstorm renders him hopeless as his mother takes ill and eventually dies. Following his mother’s death, Saleh’s bankruptcy compels him to take a loan from the elderly Zubairu and his failure to repay the loan compels him to hand over his daughter, Habiba, in marriage to Zubairu. Consequently, Habiba is helpless and soon discovers that she must pay not just for her father’s wrongs but must also shoulder the responsibility of his abandoned wife and children by remaining married to Zubairu who is willing to assist them as long as she plays his game. Habiba desires to punish both her father and Zubairu for ruining her dreams. What will she have to do to get at them?

But in due course he is distracted from his efforts to earn money and takes up with several loose women. He falls in love with one of them, who has a heart-rending story of her own to tell. These star-crossed lovers, finally having found each other, come face to face with a bleak future exasperated by their lack of money or resources. Book BlackInSchool

Download or read book BlackInSchool written by Habiba Cooper Diallo and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A firsthand account of systemic anti-Black racism in Canadian schools The prevalence of anti-Black racism and its many faces, from racial profiling to police brutality, in North America is indisputable. How do we stop racist ideas and violence if the very foundation of our society is built upon white supremacy? How do we end systemic racism if the majority do not experience it or question its existence? Do our schools instill children with the ideals of equality and tolerance, or do they reinforce differences and teach children of colour that they don't belong? #BlackInSchool is Habiba Cooper Diallo's high school journal, in which she documents, processes, and resists the systemic racism, microaggressions, stereotypes, and outright racism she experienced in Canada's education system. Powerful and eye-opening, Cooper Diallo illustrates how our schools reinforce rather than erode racism: the handcuffing and frisking of students of colour by police at school, one-dimensional, tokenistic curricula of Black people, and the constant barrage of overt racism from students and staff alike. She shows how systemic racism works, how it alienates and seeks to destroys a child's sense of self. She shows how our institutions work to erase the lived experiences of Black youth and tries to erase Black youth themselves. Cooper Diallo's words will resonate with some, but should shock, appall, and animate a great many more into action towards a society that is truly equitable for all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author lived in western Africa as a Christian missionary and intends this study as a tool of conversion. The study is divided into three books. The first book describes the historical context in which Mohammed lived and the important accomplishments of his life. In Book II, Koelle argues that Muslim authors plagiarized the story of Christ when writing about Mohammed. The book details the parallel storylines and symbolism. Chapter II of Book II contains filtered descriptions of Mohammed's physical aspects and personal habits as described by Muslim writers (his dress, his physical qualities, his miracles, his habits as to sneezing and yawning, etc). Book III is a Christianity-based assessment of "the real nature of the position occupied by Mohammedanism ..."
