For when they printed the bible, they had spent more than four thousand guilders (an assertion contrary to the sum mentioned in the official law-suit!) before they had finished the third quaternion; 7. But Peter Schoffer, homo ingeniosus et prudens, invented a more easy way of casting types and brought the art to its present perfection; 8. These three kept the art of printing secret for a long time, until it was spread by the workmen, and first of all to Strasburg; 9. The three first inventors lived at Mentz in the house zum Jungen, called at present the printing-office (impressoria). (Contrary to his information of 1506: "Morabatur autem prsefatus Joannes Gutenberg Moguntise in domo, dicta zum Jungen, quse domus usque in prsesentem diem illius novse artis nomine dignoscitur insignita.") Ergo: Gutenberg squandered first his money on xylography, which no longer wanted to be invented; invents, but together with Fust, for the sake of convenience, as those wooden blocks could be used but once, typography, and this art would have perished without the assistance of Fust and Schoffer. Notwithstanding our good, superstitious abbot has spoken with Peter Schoffer, and even if St. Peter had been present, he tells nonsense or has been a dupe. Is it critical to allow ourselves to be guided by such thoughtless compilations, full of contradiction and untruths? The meaning of the account, namely to reduce Gutenberg's invention to nothing, to give Fust a share in the invention of moveable types, and to raise Schoffer to the great man, is so evident that the tendency sufficiently explains the untruths it contains. The explanation-tricks played with respect to that xylographic (!) vocabulary, Catholicon, prove sufficiently that ...
