Download or read book Spaces of PL Manifolds and Categories of Simple Maps written by Friedhelm Waldhausen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its introduction by Friedhelm Waldhausen in the 1970s, the algebraic K-theory of spaces has been recognized as the main tool for studying parametrized phenomena in the theory of manifolds. However, a full proof of the equivalence relating the two areas has not appeared until now. This book presents such a proof, essentially completing Waldhausen's program from more than thirty years ago. The main result is a stable parametrized h-cobordism theorem, derived from a homotopy equivalence between a space of PL h-cobordisms on a space X and the classifying space of a category of simple maps of spaces having X as deformation retract. The smooth and topological results then follow by smoothing and triangulation theory. The proof has two main parts. The essence of the first part is a "desingularization," improving arbitrary finite simplicial sets to polyhedra. The second part compares polyhedra with PL manifolds by a thickening procedure. Many of the techniques and results developed should be useful in other connections.

The papers in the volume describe current research in the subject, and all included works were refereed. Rather than being a summary of work to be published elsewhere, each paper is the unique source for the new material it contains. The book contains current research from international experts in the subject area, and presents open problems with directions for future research.
Download or read book A Concise Course in Algebraic Topology written by J. P. May and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1999-09 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebraic topology is a basic part of modern mathematics, and some knowledge of this area is indispensable for any advanced work relating to geometry, including topology itself, differential geometry, algebraic geometry, and Lie groups. This book provides a detailed treatment of algebraic topology both for teachers of the subject and for advanced graduate students in mathematics either specializing in this area or continuing on to other fields. J. Peter May's approach reflects the enormous internal developments within algebraic topology over the past several decades, most of which are largely unknown to mathematicians in other fields. But he also retains the classical presentations of various topics where appropriate. Most chapters end with problems that further explore and refine the concepts presented. The final four chapters provide sketches of substantial areas of algebraic topology that are normally omitted from introductory texts, and the book concludes with a list of suggested readings for those interested in delving further into the field.

Download or read book Algebraic Methods in Unstable Homotopy Theory written by Joseph Neisendorfer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-18 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most modern and thorough treatment of unstable homotopy theory available. The focus is on those methods from algebraic topology which are needed in the presentation of results, proven by Cohen, Moore, and the author, on the exponents of homotopy groups. The author introduces various aspects of unstable homotopy theory, including: homotopy groups with coefficients; localization and completion; the Hopf invariants of Hilton, James, and Toda; Samelson products; homotopy Bockstein spectral sequences; graded Lie algebras; differential homological algebra; and the exponent theorems concerning the homotopy groups of spheres and Moore spaces. This book is suitable for a course in unstable homotopy theory, following a first course in homotopy theory. It is also a valuable reference for both experts and graduate students wishing to enter the field.

Download or read book Introduction to Combinatorial Torsions written by Vladimir Turaev and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to combinatorial torsions of cellular spaces and manifolds with special emphasis on torsions of 3-dimensional manifolds. The first two chapters cover algebraic foundations of the theory of torsions and various topological constructions of torsions due to K. Reidemeister, J.H.C. Whitehead, J. Milnor and the author. We also discuss connections between the torsions and the Alexander polynomials of links and 3-manifolds. The third (and last) chapter of the book deals with so-called refined torsions and the related additional structures on manifolds, specifically homological orientations and Euler structures. As an application, we give a construction of the multivariable Conway polynomial of links in homology 3-spheres. At the end of the book, we briefly describe the recent results of G. Meng, C.H. Taubes and the author on the connections between the refined torsions and the Seiberg-Witten invariant of 3-manifolds. The exposition is aimed at students, professional mathematicians and physicists interested in combinatorial aspects of topology and/or in low dimensional topology. The necessary background for the reader includes the elementary basics of topology and homological algebra.
Download or read book Implications in Morava K Theory written by Richard M. Kane and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1986 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies the mod 2 cohomology [italic]H*[italic]X of finite [italic]H-spaces. It is shown that when [italic]X is connected and simply connected then [italic]H*[italic]X has no indecomposables of even degree. As a consequence, [italic]H*([capital Greek]Omega[italic]X;[bold]Z) and [italic]K*[italic]X have no 2 torsion. The main result is proved by using Morava [script]K-theory.

Download or read book Secondary Cohomology Operations written by John R. Harper and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the theory and applications of secondary cohomology operations are an important part of an advanced graduate-level algebraic topology course, there are few books on the subject. The AMS now fills that gap with the publication of the present volume. The author's main purpose in this book is to develop the theory of secondary cohomology operations for singular cohomology theory, which is treated in terms of elementary constructions from general homotopy theory. Among manyapplications considered are the Hopf invariant one theorem (for all primes $p$, including $p = 2$), Browder's theorem on higher Bockstein operations, and cohomology theory of Massey-Peterson fibrations. Numerous examples and exercises help readers to gain a working knowledge of the theory. A summary ofmore advanced parts of the core material is included in the first chapter. Prerequisite is basic algebraic topology, including the Steenrod operations. The book is geared toward graduate students and research mathematicians interested in algebraic topology and can be used for self-study or as a textbook for an advanced course on the topic. It is available in both hardcover and softcover editions.
Download or read book A User s Guide to Spectral Sequences written by John McCleary and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spectral sequences are among the most elegant and powerful methods of computation in mathematics. This book describes some of the most important examples of spectral sequences and some of their most spectacular applications. The first part treats the algebraic foundations for this sort of homological algebra, starting from informal calculations. The heart of the text is an exposition of the classical examples from homotopy theory, with chapters on the Leray-Serre spectral sequence, the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence, the Adams spectral sequence, and, in this new edition, the Bockstein spectral sequence. The last part of the book treats applications throughout mathematics, including the theory of knots and links, algebraic geometry, differential geometry and algebra. This is an excellent reference for students and researchers in geometry, topology, and algebra.

This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of hyperbolic groups has its starting point in a fundamental paper by M. Gromov, published in 1987. These are finitely generated groups that share important properties with negatively curved Riemannian manifolds. This monograph is intended to be an introduction to part of Gromov's theory, giving basic definitions, some of the most important examples, various properties of hyperbolic groups, and an application to the construction of infinite torsion groups. The main theme is the relevance of geometric ideas to the understanding of finitely generated groups. In addition to chapters written by the editors, contributions by W. Ballmann, A. Haefliger, E. Salem, R. Strebel, and M. Troyanov are also included. The book will be particularly useful to researchers in combinatorial group theory, Riemannian geometry, and theoretical physics, as well as post-graduate students interested in these fields.
