Until recently, Internet gambling has been understudied by the research community, but now a growing body of literature is emerging, on all aspects of Internet gambling and its attendant implications. Book Inzell Lectures on Orthogonal Polynomials

Download or read book Inzell Lectures on Orthogonal Polynomials written by Wolfgang zu Castell and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the success of Fourier analysis and Hilbert space theory, orthogonal expansions undoubtedly count as fundamental concepts of mathematical analysis. Along with the need for highly involved functions systems having special properties and analysis on more complicated domains, harmonic analysis has steadily increased its importance in modern mathematical analysis. Deep connections between harmonic analysis and the theory of special functions have been discovered comparatively late, but since then have been exploited in many directions. The Inzell Lectures focus on the interrelation between orthogonal polynomials and harmonic analysis.

Book excerpt: This book presents a review of the federal criminal statutes implicated by conducting illegal gambling using the Internet. It also discusses some of the constitutional and practical difficulties associated with prosecuting illegal Internet gambling and closes with a summary of the proposed Internet Gambling Prohibition Act (S.474). Gambling is primarily a matter of state law, reinforced by federal law in instances where the presence of an interstate or foreign feature might otherwise frustrate the enforcement policies of state law. State officials and others have expressed concern that the Internet may be used to conduct illegal gambling. Illicit Internet gambling implicates six federal criminal statutes. It is a federal crime to (1) conduct an illegal gambling business, 18 USC 1955; (2) use the telephone or telecommunications to conduct an illegal business; (3) use the facilities of interstate commerce to facilitate conducting an illegal gambling operation; (4) commit a related series of these gambling crimes to acquire or operate an interstate commercial enterprise; (5) launder the proceeds from an illegal gambling business or to plow them back into the business; or (6) spend over $10,000 of the proceeds from an illegal gambling operation at any one time or place. Although prosecution of illegal Internet gambling will likely encounter constitutional challenges, practical difficulties imposed by offshore operations, encryption, remailers and the like will probably pose a more substantial obstacle.

Book Taking Action on Internet Gambling

Download or read book Taking Action on Internet Gambling written by Russell K. Mayer and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-03-06 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses the case of the rise and fall of the Internet gambling industry to illustrate a new approach to understanding how public policy is made in the United States. The theory advanced is that different phases of the policy process are governed by three distinct political dynamics: constraint, momentum, and discretion. The book maps this CMD model of the policy process onto the case of Internet gambling, examining the full range of political venues in which issues of public policy are acted upon. It argues that constraint rules the day in the early phases of the policy process, momentum builds in the middle, and discretion comes into play most prominently as the policy cycle concludes. This CMD model both draws attention to previously understudied elements of policymaking, and explores the dynamic and interrelated nature of these three phases of the policy process.
