Book excerpt: Harlan Page Hall (1838-1907) founded the St. Paul Dispatch in 1868 and devoted most of his life to journalism. This book, based on personal reminiscences, chronicles the contests and struggles of Minnesota's political parties from its territorial years through the early twentieth century. He emphasizes the parties' factional struggles but also connects politics within the state to national campaigns, candidates, and issues. Hall describes local politics in light of the region's conflicting economic interests and devotes considerable attention to political strategy at the grassroots level.

Book H P Hall s Observations

Book excerpt: Excerpt from H. P. Hall's Observations: Being More or Less a History of Political Contests While, as far as they go, my observations are designed to make, when united, a political history, I do not assume to write what might be termed a complete resume of the political events which have transpired in the State of Minnesota. That would involve the publication of a semi-political almanac, which is the farthest from my intention. It has been my aim to confine myself to political contests; not so much between political parties, but rather internecine struggles within the ranks of the party which has been dominant most of the time since the formation of the territory of the State of Minnesota. If the Democrats do not appear as frequently as the Republicans it is because the Republicans have been so much more numerous that they (the Democrats) did not have as much to fight about. As the work has progressed, my greatest dilemma has been to determine what to omit rather than what to tell. I have sought not to invade the grave or unduly disturb the living, and so far as the dead are concerned have largely confined myself to matters made public while they were still alive, as well as quoting from public (though forgotten) records which live forever. I make no apology for the use of the personal pronoun. It probably appears more frequently than any other word in this book. For the most part I can say of what I have written, "all of which I saw and part of which I was," and I accordingly write of things as I saw and understood them at the time of their occurrence. I have aimed to refresh my memory, which is still fairly good and vivid, by reference to newspaper files, largely newspapers of my own, when I recorded events at the time they were current and fresh. Errors have doubtless crept in, but the truth has been stated as carefully as possible, fairly and honestly, without a single intention of misrepresentation. In writing my book no attempt has been made to indulge in stilted rhetoric - just plain newspaper vernacular. Download or read book Civil War Wests written by Adam Arenson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2015-03-07 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative study presents a new, integrated view of the Civil War and Reconstruction and the history of the western United States. Award-winning historians such as Steven Hahn, Martha Sandweiss, William Deverell, Virginia Scharff, and Stephen Kantrowitz offer original essays on lives, choices, and legacies in the American West, discussing the consequences for American Indian nations, the link between Reconstruction and suffrage movements, and cross-border interactions with Canada and Mexico. In the West, Civil War battlefields and Civil War politics engaged a wide range of ethnic and racial distinctions, raising questions that would arise only later in places farther east. Histories of Reconstruction in the South ignore the connections to previous occupation efforts and citizenship debates in the West. The stories contained in this volume complicate our understanding of the paths from slavery to freedom for white as well as non-white Americans. By placing the histories of the American West and the Civil War and Reconstruction period within one sustained conversation, this volume expands the limits of both by emphasizing how struggles over land, labor, sovereignty, and citizenship shaped the U.S. nation-state in this tumultuous era. This volume highlights significant moments and common concerns of this continuous conflict, as it stretched across the continent and throughout the nineteenth century. Publishing on the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, this collection brings eminent historians into conversation, looking at the Civil War from several Western perspectives, and delivers a refreshingly disorienting view intended for scholars, general readers, and students. Published in Cooperation with the William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies, Southern Methodist University.
