Book The Future Kingdom of God

Download or read book The Future Kingdom of God written by Fr Steven Scherrer Thd and published by . This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kingdom of God is not explained anywhere in the New Testament, yet it seems to be everywhere understood. No explanation was ever needed, and so none was given. In The Future Kingdom of God: A Present Reality and Our Blessed Hope, author Father Steven Scherrer presents an in-depth study of the kingdom of God as it appears in the scriptures. Based on an edited collection of original sermons and essays revolving around the New Testament doctrine of the kingdom of God, this thorough discussion provides a guide for those seeking insight into various aspects about the second coming of Jesus Christ. Some of the topics on which the essays reflect include the splendor of the kingdom of God now present, as seen in the Church's Advent and Christmas liturgies; the millennial hope as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy; the enchanted expectation of the Parousia, as seen in the Church's autumn liturgies; the longing to be found innocent in holiness at the coming of the Lord. Using the scriptures and examples from the Bible, The Future Kingdom of God demonstrates how Christians can, by faith, now live in the splendor of God's kingdom present in their midst.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kingdom (Basileia): An Exegetical Study The purpose of this book is not to argue, but to inquire; not to destroy, but to upbuild; not to dispraise creeds, but to exalt Christ; not to foster doubts about the King dom of God, but to strengthen loyalty to the King himself; not to lead the reader to any ecclesiastical river or to any theological lake, but to the Divine Fountain itself in brief, the purpose of this book is not polemic, but irenic. May grace be given the writer to steer his little craft between the Scylla of Rationalism and the Charybdis of Traditionalism. The method of this book is not ecclesiastical; nor is it historical; nor is it syllogistic; the method is strictly angelica]. The citations are mainly from the more recent translations. While fully recognizing the value of modern researches in textual criticism, the author does not feel competent to discuss these critical questions, and there fore adheres to Westcott and Hort's Greek Text. Of course there must be limitations of treatment on a theme so vast. Accordingly, the author mainly confines himself to those Scriptures in which the term Basileia (kingdom) occurs. Book The Pillar and Ground of the Truth

Download or read book The Pillar and Ground of the Truth written by Pavel Florensky and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pavel Florensky--certainly the greatest Russian theologian of the last century--is now recognized as one of Russia's greatest polymaths. Known as the Russian Leonardo da Vinci, he became a Russian Orthodox priest in 1911, while remaining deeply involved with the cultural, artistic, and scientific developments of his time. Arrested briefly by the Soviets in 1928, he returned to his scholarly activities until 1933, when he was sentenced to ten years of corrective labor in Siberia. There he continued his scientific work and ministered to his fellow prisoners until his death four years later. This volume is the first English translation of his rich and fascinating defense of Russian Orthodox theology. Originally published in 1914, the book is a series of twelve letters to a "brother" or "friend," who may be understood symbolically as Christ. Central to Florensky's work is an exploration of the various meanings of Christian love, which is viewed as a combination of philia (friendship) and agape (universal love). Florensky is perhaps the first modern writer to explore the so-called "same-sex unions," which, for him, are not sexual in nature. He describes the ancient Christian rites of the adelphopoiesis (brother-making), joining male friends in chaste bonds of love. In addition, Florensky is one of the first thinkers in the twentieth century to develop the idea of the Divine Sophia, who has become one of the central concerns of feminist theologians.

Book The Oxford Companion to Christian Thought

Download or read book The Oxford Companion to Christian Thought written by Adrian Hastings and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-12-21 with total page 809 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embracing the viewpoints of Catholic, Protestant, or Orthodox thinkers, of conservatives, liberals, radicals, and agnostics, Christianity today is anything but monolithic or univocal. In The Oxford Companion to Christian Thought, general editor Adrian Hastings has tried to capture a sense of the great diversity of opinion that swirls about under the heading of Christian thought. Indeed, the 260 contributors, who hail from twenty countries, represent as wide a range of perspectives as possible. Here is a comprehensive and authoritative (though not dogmatic) overview of the full spectrum of Christian thinking. Within its 600 alphabetically arranged entries, readers will find lengthy survey articles on the history of Christian thought, on national and regional traditions, and on various denominations, from Anglican to Unitarian. There is ample coverage of Eastern thought as well, examining the Christian tradition in China, Japan, India, and Africa. The contributors examine major theological topics such as resurrection, the Eucharist, and grace as well as controversial issues such as homosexuality and abortion. In addition, short entries illuminate symbols such as water and wine, and there are many profiles of leading theologians, of non-Christians who have deeply influenced Christian thinking, including Aristotle and Plato, and of literary figures such as Dante, Milton, and Tolstoy. Most articles end with a list of suggested readings and the book features a large number of cross-references.The Oxford Companion to Christian Thought is an indispensable guide to one of the central strands of Western culture. An essential volume for all Christians, it is a thoughtful gift for the holidays.
