Book Scottish Traveller Tales

    Book Details:
  • Author : Donald Braid
  • Publisher : Univ. Press of Mississippi
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN : 1604736623
  • Pages : 329 pages

Download or read book Scottish Traveller Tales written by Donald Braid and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2002 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Travelling People of Scotland are the traditionally nomadic minority group known also by the derogatory term tinkers. Traveling in groups or in their individual caravans along the high roads and byways of Scotland, they have established a distinct identity and mode of life for themselves that preserves centuries-old cultural beliefs. For their skill as storytellers, as well as ballad singers, they are internationally recognized for the richest storytelling traditions of the world. One of their best-known storytellers is Duncan Williamson. He was fascinated by storytelling from an early age and dedicated himself to keeping the wisdom of traveller culture by learning as many stories as possible. While this book focuses on a number of individuals, both Duncan's skill as a storyteller and his extensive knowledge of traveller storytelling traditions are prominently featured through a series of performance transcriptions and interview excerpts. Although their oral tales have been compiled and collected in other volumes, this book is the only full-length study that analyzes the stories of the Travelling People. Through an examination of their words, narratives, and songs, it brings readers close to Travellers' own voices and to their distinctive practice of storytelling. Indeed, this analytical appreciation of the culture shows how the story performances preserve the history of the Travelling People and reveal the shape and substance of the storytellers' own lives. It renders too the rich variety of stories, the interrelationship of stories and the community, the construction of the teller's identity within the story, and the story's way of understanding and shaping human experience. Although concentrated on these Scottish storytellers, this book imparts insights into the process of storytelling in general and contributes understanding of the place of stories in human communities and to human identity. Donald Braid, assistant director of the Center for Citizenship and Community and a lecturer in English at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, is a co-editor of A Folklorist's Progress: Reflections of a Scholar's Life. His work has been published in the Journal of American Folklore, Text and Performance Quarterly, and The Encyclopedia of Folklore and Literature.

By campfires, under the unchanging stars they brewed up tea, telling stories and singing songs late into the night. "Jessie's Journey" describes what it was like to be one of the last of the traditional travelling folk. It is not an idyllic tale, but despite the threat of bigoted abuse and scattered schooling, humour and laughter run throughout a childhood teeming with unforgettable characters and incidents.

Download or read book The Traveller s Tale written by Alastair Macleod and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2014-10-28 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As he spoke the young photographer reappeared. "This is the girl you wanted?" The photographer nodded. For this shot he needed someone young. She was not unattractive, even in that crazy outfit. Good bone structure, oval face, brown eyes, dark hair – that slight fragile look- all of that contrasted well with the factory gear. Some of the workers looked at home in it; their feet filled the white wellies, their solid figures swelling in the white overalls. This one seemed only to have temporarily slipped on the garb – as if she was wearing an outfit for an occasion. "My name is Vlado." He held out his hand. The trick was to get the subject to relax, that way you got a more natural shot, you avoided the frightened rabbit look. “What is your name?" "Vera," she whispered. "Do you have any hobbies?" said Vlado, as he began setting up some lights on stands. He was nimble, not tall; she watched his quick hands tighten the clamps on the light poles.

Book Bury Me Standing

  • Pages : 353 pages

Book excerpt: A masterful work of personal reportage, this volume is also a vibrant portrait of a mysterious people and an essential document of a disappearing culture. Fabled, feared, romanticized, and reviled, the Gypsies—or Roma—are among the least understood people on earth. Their culture remains largely obscure, but in Isabel Fonseca they have found an eloquent witness. In Bury Me Standing, alongside unforgettable portraits of individuals—the poet, the politician, the child prostitute—Fonseca offers sharp insights into the humor, language, wisdom, and taboos of the Roma. She traces their exodus out of India 1,000 years ago and their astonishing history of persecution: enslaved by the princes of medieval Romania; massacred by the Nazis; forcibly assimilated by the communist regimes; evicted from their settlements in Eastern Europe, and most recently, in Western Europe as well. Whether as handy scapegoats or figments of the romantic imagination, the Gypsies have always been with us—but never before have they been brought so vividly to life. Includes fifty black and white photos.
