Book Feasability of Using a Gyratory Compactor to Determine Compaction Characteristics of Soil

Download or read book Feasability of Using a Gyratory Compactor to Determine Compaction Characteristics of Soil written by Michael John Browne and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gyratory compaction results, expressed in terms of dry unit weight and optimum moisture content, were compared to traditional laboratory compaction methods (Proctor and relative density tests). These results indicated that each soil type (A-1-a, A- 3, A-4, and A-7-6) was sensitive to one or more of the gyratory compaction variables. When compacted with moisture soil dry unit weights obtained from gyratory compaction surpassed the dry unit weights of traditional compaction methods for the majority of soils tested; therefore, gyratory compaction was considered a feasible and effective method of laboratory soil compaction. A-4 was the only soil whose dry density did not surpass some of traditional compaction tests. Continued research is needed to develop a standardized protocol for gyratory compaction of soils as well as gain a more thorough understanding of free-draining soil. Future studies may also gain a better understanding of gyratory compaction by comparing dry unit weights, pressures, or energies of gyratory compaction to field compaction instead of existing laboratory compaction techniques.

Book Gyratory Compaction of Soil

Download or read book Gyratory Compaction of Soil written by Loren M. Womack and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were performed to determine the effect of three gyratory compactor variables (angle of gyration, vertical pressure, and number of revolutions) on the compaction characteristics of lean clay. The lean clay was also compacted by the impact compaction method for comparison with the gyratory compaction results. These data are to be used for an analysis exploring the use of the gyratory compactor in the design of pavement structures for present and future traffic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were performed to determine the effect of the gyratory compactor's three variables (angle of gyration, vertical pressure, and number of revolutions) on the compaction characteristics of crushed limestone. Other information obtained during the test program included upper roller pressures, sample rebound after gyration, California Bearing Ratios indicating comparative soil strength, reproducibility of gyratory compaction results, and degradation of aggregate during gyratory compaction. Book Moisture Density Strength Energy Relationships for Gyratory Compacted Geomaterials

Download or read book Moisture Density Strength Energy Relationships for Gyratory Compacted Geomaterials written by Cheng Li and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laboratory Proctor and vibratory table compaction tests are commonly used to determine moisture-density-compaction energy relationships for soils and are typically limited to one or two compaction energy curves. They do not, however, provide shear strength or stiffness parameters that are commonly used in design and with performance-based specifications. In this study, a gyratory compactor equipped with a pressure distribution analyzer (PDA) was used to rapidly develop moisture-density-shear resistance-compaction energy relationships. Because the PDA equipment involves sensors, data acquisition, and interpretation, repeatability and reproducibility tests were conducted and evaluated using two-way analysis of variance. A wide range of geomaterials was tested: silica sand, crushed limestone sub-base, recycled pavement materials sub-base, and coal combustion products. Comparisons between the gyratory PDA test and conventional laboratory compaction tests and factors affecting the moisture-density-strength-energy relationships were discussed.

Book Compaction of Cohesionless Materials

Download or read book Compaction of Cohesionless Materials written by Joseph R. Compton and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report contains data on laboratory and field compaction of cohesionless soils obtained from a survey of Corps of Engineers division laboratories, and results of different types of laboratory compaction tests performed in the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) laboratory on three cohesionless materials. The tests at WES were conducted to study various laboratory compaction test methods used for cohesionless materials. The three materials tested were a poorly graded sand (SP), a well- graded sand (SW), and a sandy gravel (GW). Impact, Providence vibrated density, vibratory table, and gyratory compaction test methods were used. Replicate tests were conducted on each soil to determine the variations in maximum dry density resulting from different test methods. Different technicians conducted the replicate tests in order that the variations in test results due to different techniques could be determined. Selected tests were also conducted on dry and wet specimens to determine the effect of water content on resulting densities. Gyratory tests were conducted using different angles of gyration and different vertical pressures to determine the effects of these variables.
