Finding solace from war-torn France in the quiet English countryside, Viktor Karoly and his friends seek nothing but a measure of contentment, a chance to rest and play their popular songs. Forged into a unit by their common need to protect the weak, all six gather one summer evening at a country house for a party.one that would split them up and send each on the adventure of a lifetime. Secrets would be revealed, their pasts would come back to haunt them, and for each man a woman-a special woman who could reach past their carefully-constructed facades and into the soul beneath. As fiery in bed as they are in their hearts, these Gypsy Lovers like nothing more than to burn up the sheets. However, none of them expected the resulting blaze to consume them or make them so much more than they were on that fateful summer night.

Book Gypsy Identities 1500 2000

Download or read book Gypsy Identities 1500 2000 written by David Mayall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gypsies have lived in England since the early sixteenth century, yet considerable confusion and disagreement remain over the precise identity of the group. The question 'Who are the Gypsies?' is still asked and the debates about the positioning and permanence of the boundary between Gypsy and non-Gypsy are contested as fiercely today as at any time before. This study locates these debates in their historical perspective, tracing the origins and reproduction of the various ways of defining and representing the Gypsy from the early sixteenth century to the present day. Starting with a consideration of the early modern description of Gypsies as Egyptians, land pirates and vagabonds, the volume goes on to examine the racial classification of the nineteenth century and the emergence of the ethnic Gypsy in the twentieth century. The book closes with an exploration of the long-lasting image of the group as vagrant and parasitic nuisances which spans the whole period from 1500 to 2000.

Book The Scholar Gypsy

Download or read book The Scholar Gypsy written by Anthony Sampson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-11-19 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a child, Anthony Sampson was haunted by a family skeleton. He knew his grandfather John Sampson had been an authority on the gypsies. They had called him the Rai - the Master - and had flocked to his magnificent funeral on a Welsh mountain. But of his grandfather's private life he was told nothing, nor of the mysterious aunt who joined the family after his death. In fact only sixty years later did the truth begin to emerge. This book follows a trail of clues to uncover an extraordinary hidden life and a gypsy world now disappeared. John Sampson was a brilliant philologist who, happening to encounter a gypsy tribe in North Wales, compiled over thirty years a dictionary of the Romani language that remains the standard work. But he also became a Bohemian himself, a bigamist and the father of a child who was brought up secretly and who would in turn become a remarkable scholar. Using intimate letters, bawdy rhymes and wonderful illustrations- including many by Augustus John who was part of the circle - Anthony Sampson brings to life a group of scholars, writers and painters who escaped Victorian convention to pursue an alternative life in the Welsh hills. The Scholar Gypsy is both a detective story and a moving voyage of discovery. Ranging through finely observed contrasts and connections it illuminates many lesser-known aspects of Victorian and Edwardian Britain and vividly conveys the spell that gypsies cast on the imagination of artists and writers, and the fear that they arouse among the conventional.

Book excerpt: Gypsy's are a quiet breed... Except when it comes to love... Being a proper lady won't suffice for Lucy-Ann Spencer. Dragged off to London kicking and screaming, Lucy-Ann Spencer refuses to become a proper young lady. Despite her aunts' insistence, she spurns the suitably titled and wealthy men who court her, longing instead for the Gypsy lad and the freedom she once loved. (A Proper Lady's Gypsy Lover) Lord Harry Beresford is used to having everything his way-that is, until he falls in love with Gypsy singer Talaitha Grey. Proud Talaitha is as unimpressed by his title as she is by his wealth, but can she fight her powerful attraction to the man behind those things? (For Love of a Gypsy Lass). Joanna Daniels is a widow who wants a father for her son. Tem Lovell is a widower hoping to find a mother for his children. They are perfect for each other except for one thing: she's a destitute English gentlewoman who is being courted by a wealthy lord, while Tem is a Gypsy laborer who lives hand-to-mouth. (The Gypsy and the Widow). There's a reason the Gypsy clan's wise-woman says sweethearts Cambio and Tsura must wait six months before they wed, and that reason is the lovely Lady Chinton-a beautiful and bored aristocrat who always gets what she wants, and what she wants is Cambio Adams. (To Tempt A Gypsy)

Book Gypsies and the British Imagination 1807 1930

Download or read book Gypsies and the British Imagination 1807 1930 written by Deborah Epstein Nord and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-28 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gypsies and the British Imagination, 1807-1930, is the first book to explore fully the British obsession with Gypsies throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth. Deborah Epstein Nord traces various representations of Gypsies in the works of such well-known British authors John Clare, Walter Scott, William Wordsworth, George Eliot, Arthur Conan Doyle, and D. H. Lawrence. Nord also exhumes lesser-known literary, ethnographic, and historical texts, exploring the fascinating histories of nomadic writer George Borrow, the Gypsy Lore Society, Dora Yates, and other rarely examined figures and institutions. Gypsies were both idealized and reviled by Victorian and early-twentieth-century Britons. Associated with primitive desires, lawlessness, cunning, and sexual excess, Gypsies were also objects of antiquarian, literary, and anthropological interest. As Nord demonstrates, British writers and artists drew on Gypsy characters and plots to redefine and reconstruct cultural and racial difference, national and personal identity, and the individual's relationship to social and sexual orthodoxies. Gypsies were long associated with pastoral conventions and, in the nineteenth century, came to stand in for the ancient British past. Using myths of switched babies, Gypsy kidnappings, and the Gypsies' murky origins, authors projected onto Gypsies their own desires to escape convention and their anxieties about the ambiguities of identity. The literary representations that Nord examines have their roots in the interplay between the notion of Gypsies as a separate, often despised race and the psychic or aesthetic desire to dissolve the boundary between English and Gypsy worlds. By the beginning of the twentieth century, she argues, romantic identification with Gypsies had hardened into caricature-a phenomenon reflected in D. H. Lawrence's The Virgin and the Gipsy-and thoroughly obscured the reality of Gypsy life and history.
