Book excerpt: Gypsy Lord is the first book in a beautiful repackaging and reissuing of classic Kat Martin historical romances! He was Dominic Edgemont, Lord Nightwyck, heir to the Marquis of Gravenwold. But he was also a dark-eyed, half-gypsy bastard.... When tall, handsome Dominic sees one of his Romany band whipping a beautiful, flame-haired captive, he never dreams she is a pampered heiress stolen fro the English court. To have her, he will pay a king's ransom and make himself her lord. Lovely Catrina forbids Dominic her bed, but her fiery temper is no match for his cool determination to take her as his lover. Still, in this novel from Kat Martin, she will not be passion's slave forever. She and her Gypsy Lord will meet again-in a glittering London setting, far from the rustic tent they shared. Will her desire for revenge overwhelm her natural urge to love?

But, before long he discovered the true nature of both his adulterous wife and the gilded world of the royal court. Bitter and jaded after a public divorce, Desmond cultivates a reputation for himself as a conscienceless rake, one he wears as a badge of honor. After the death of her father, Lady Anastasia Harden flees the only home she's ever known to escape the clutches of her despicable cousin, who plans to force her into marrying him. When her escape goes awry, she finds herself penniless and without a friend in the world. Taking shelter within The Red Rose, a brothel catering to a wealthy and titled clientele, Anastasia faces a choice between working her fingers to the bone as a maid or earning wealth and comfort as the lover a dark lord.Upon finding the enigmatic Ana working as a maid at The Red Rose, Desmond is determined to have her, and no price is too great. With an arrangement agreed upon, he thinks to indulge in a meaningless affair, but finds himself rapidly falling under Ana's spell. As feelings of passion begin to develop into something more, he will be forced to acknowledge his growing love for her.Anastasia does not want to keep the truth of her past from Desmond, but the revelation would tear them apart. Book Gypsy Politics and Social Change

Download or read book Gypsy Politics and Social Change written by Thomas Acton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1974, analyses the position of the Gypsies in Britain in the twentieth century, and assesses its significance in their overall history. Two dramatic shifts in Government policy towards the Gypsies are examined – in the 1880s and the 1960s – as are the changes in the stereotype of the ‘true Gypsy’. Dr Acton traces the developments of attitudes and economic conditions that gave rise to the 1970s increase in interest in Gypsies, and discusses the concomitant political and pressure group activity. He gives an account of the historical background to modern Gypsy politics; describes the postwar situation of the Gypsies in England and Wales, including pro-Gypsy pressure group activity up to 1965, and goes on to cover the campaigns of the Gypsy Council, including a sociological assessment of its work. He considers these aspects of Gypsy life in the light of modern sociological theory on minorities and race relations.

Book Gypsy Identities 1500 2000

Download or read book Gypsy Identities 1500 2000 written by David Mayall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gypsies have lived in England since the early sixteenth century, yet considerable confusion and disagreement remain over the precise identity of the group. The question 'Who are the Gypsies?' is still asked and the debates about the positioning and permanence of the boundary between Gypsy and non-Gypsy are contested as fiercely today as at any time before. This study locates these debates in their historical perspective, tracing the origins and reproduction of the various ways of defining and representing the Gypsy from the early sixteenth century to the present day. Starting with a consideration of the early modern description of Gypsies as Egyptians, land pirates and vagabonds, the volume goes on to examine the racial classification of the nineteenth century and the emergence of the ethnic Gypsy in the twentieth century. The book closes with an exploration of the long-lasting image of the group as vagrant and parasitic nuisances which spans the whole period from 1500 to 2000.

Book The Damned Fraternitie Constructing Gypsy Identity in Early Modern England 1500 1700

Download or read book The Damned Fraternitie Constructing Gypsy Identity in Early Modern England 1500 1700 written by Frances Timbers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Damned Fraternitie': Constructing Gypsy Identity in Early Modern England, 1500–1700 examines the construction of gypsy identity in England between the early sixteenth century and the end of the seventeenth century. Drawing upon previous historiography, a wealth of printed primary sources (including government documents, pamphlets, rogue literature, and plays), and archival material (quarter sessions and assize cases, parish records and constables's accounts), the book argues that the construction of gypsy identity was part of a wider discourse concerning the increasing vagabond population, and was further informed by the religious reformations and political insecurities of the time. The developing narrative of a fraternity of dangerous vagrants resulted in the gypsy population being designated as a special category of rogues and vagabonds by both the state and popular culture. The alleged Egyptian origin of the group and the practice of fortune-telling by palmistry contributed elements of the exotic, which contributed to the concept of the mysterious alien. However, as this book reveals, a close examination of the first gypsies that are known by name shows that they were more likely Scottish and English vagrants, employing the ambiguous and mysterious reputation of the newly emerging category of gypsy. This challenges the theory that sixteenth-century gypsies were migrants from India and/or early predecessors to the later Roma population, as proposed by nineteenth-century gypsiologists. The book argues that the fluid identity of gypsies, whose origins and ethnicity were (and still are) ambiguous, allowed for the group to become a prime candidate for the 'other', thus a useful tool for reinforcing the parameters of orthodox social behaviour.
