Book Commitment to Musical Excellence

Download or read book Commitment to Musical Excellence written by David Holdhusen and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gustavus Choir has long stood as the premiere choral ensemble on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, USA. It is a tradition-rich group that binds its members across generations. Whether it be singing “Praise to the Lord,” or touring across the country, the choir has developed a lasting place on the choral landscape. Throughout its history, one common element has been a constant for the Gustavus Choir; the ensemble’s commitment to musical excellence. For seventy-five years, the members of The Gustavus Choir have lifted their voices in beauty and praise from the small campus on top of the hill. This internationally recognized choral ensemble has provided a heritage of choral music that is deeply rooted in the a cappella tradition. Commitment to Musical Excellence: A 75 Year History of The Gustavus Choir documents the development of The Gustavus Choir from the college’s earliest choral activities through the 75th anniversary celebration, noting the influence of F. Melius Christiansen and the Lutheran Choral School. The legacy of each of the choir’s six conductors is chronicled, including an in-depth look into their musical backgrounds and the indelible mark each has left on the choir. The book charts the development of the choir’s touring tradition, providing lists of literature performed and tour itineraries. It also explores the philosophy and mission of The Gustavus Choir, delving into the role of the ensemble within the Gustavus music department, the college, and the global community.

Book Essays on Swedish Cultural Life During the Late Eighteenth Century

Download or read book Essays on Swedish Cultural Life During the Late Eighteenth Century written by Alan Mauritz Swanson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-09-26 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When dusting out corners, we often find things once thought useful, but perhaps not useful enough to keep on display or ready to hand. If we dust in a time and place distant from that in which they were once used, we may be surprised by their vitality, which may also lead us to ask why we swept them into that corner in the first place. The articles in this book look at old letters, a popular song, a hit comedy, an overlooked opera, three Swedish composers of the period, and illustrations in a popular book. They are intended to surprise us with the residual vitality of what one can find in those dusty corners. The choice of one place and time to sweep within this book is purely practical and not exclusive; there remain many other dusty corners to be swept.

Book The emergence of Finnish book and reading culture in the 1700s

Download or read book The emergence of Finnish book and reading culture in the 1700s written by Cecilia af Forselles and published by Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura. This book was released on 2011-05-03 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book culture has emerged as an extremely dynamic and border-crossing field of research, internationally and in Finland. The editors and most of the writers of this book were members of the organizing and program committees of the 18th Annual Conference of the Society for the History of Authorship, Reading and Publishing (SHARP), Book Culture from Below, that took place in Helsinki in 2010. This book provides, for the first time in English, an overview of an important epoch in Finnish book and reading history. Besides depicting book culture at the periphery of Europe, it contributes to our understanding of the power of the urbanized European literary world of the 1700s. The new reading culture that emerged in Finland during the 1700s affected readers and all levels of society in many ways. Along with other trends, the arrival of translated fiction and Enlightenment literature from Europe opened and irrevocably altered the Finns’ world view. The change was especially pronounced in cities. Scholars, merchants, craftspersons, as well as military officers stationed at Helsinki’s offshore Sveaborg fortress, acquired world literature and guides intended for professionals at, for example, book auctions. In this book, researchers from different fields examine the significance and influence of that era’s books from cultural, historical, ideological, and social perspectives. What kinds of books did the citizens of Helsinki really buy, loan, and read during the 1700s? What topics and ideas introduced by the new literature were discussed in salons and reading circles? Who were the books’ large-scale consumers? Who were the literary opinion leaders of their times? Why did people read? Did the books change their readers’ lives?

Book Historical Dictionary of Music of the Classical Period

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Music of the Classical Period written by Bertil H. Van Boer and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When we speak of "classical music" it often refers rather loosely to serious "art" music but at the core is really the music of the classical period running from about 1730 to 1800, give or take. This was truly one of the most glorious periods for both composition and performance and it is this classical music which is still at the core of today's repertoire. Obvious names connected with this period are Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, but there were many more still reasonably well known like Gluck and C.P.E Bach, and dozens more who are regrettably little known today. This Historical Dictionary of Music of the Classical Period includes not only these composers, but also eminent conductors and performers, patrons, and publishers. There are also dictionary entries on major centers of music-making, typical instruments, important technical terms, and emerging musical forms, including the symphony and opera. Indeed, with a 1,000 cross-referenced entries, there is information on most matters of interest. This is prefaced by an extensive chronology, tracing the course of this period from year to year, and an introduction taking a careful look at the period as a whole. Finally, there is a substantial bibliography. Surely, this is a book which will appeal not only to students and researchers but all music-lovers.
