Book Rabindranath Tagore s Theatre

Download or read book Rabindranath Tagore s Theatre written by Abhijit Sen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses Rabindranath Tagore’s contribution to Bengali drama and theatre. Throughout this book, Abhijit Sen locates and studies Rabindranath’s experiments with drama/theatre in the context of the theatre available in nineteenth-century Bengal, and explores the innovative strategies he adopted to promote his ‘brand’ of theatre. This approach finds validation in the fact that Rabindranath combined in himself the roles of author-actor-producer, who always felt that, without performance, his dramatic compositions fell short of the desired completeness. Various facets of his plays as theatre and his own role as a theatre-practitioner are the prime focus of this book. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars in Theatre and Performance Studies and most notably, those focusing on Indian Theatre and Postcolonial Theatre.

Book Gitanjali

  • Author : Rabindranath Tagore
  • Publisher : Standard Ebooks
  • Release : 2017-06-25T16:22:32Z
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 246 pages

Download or read book Gitanjali written by Rabindranath Tagore and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2017-06-25T16:22:32Z with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely regarded as one of the most important figures in Indian (and more specifically Bengali) literary history, Rabindranath Tagore was the first Indian—indeed, the first person outside Europe—to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, largely in recognition of his “spiritual offering of songs,” Gitanjali. Tagore himself translated the poems from the original Bengali, taking many liberties in the process. His English translation is rightly recognized as a work distinct from the Bengali original, consisting of major revisions, many elisions, and many poems originally published in other collections. Tagore’s lyrical simplicity, vivid imagery, and themes of nature, spirituality, death, and transcendence combine to produce a truly unique, powerfully moving work of thoughtful beauty. For many who read it, Tagore’s words in Song XCVI ring true: “What I have seen is unsurpassable. I have tasted of the hidden honey of this lotus that expands on the ocean of light, and thus I am blessed.” This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book Rabindranath Tagore and Germany

Download or read book Rabindranath Tagore and Germany written by Dietmar Rothermund and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Commemorative Volume is being published by the Federation of Indo-German Societies in India (FIGS), New Delhi, in association with Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung, Munich, to celebrate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore received unprecedented welcome in Germany during his visits to that country in 1921, 1926 and 1930. The book is in three parts. The first part of this book entitled Rabindranath Tagore in Germany : A Cross Section of Contemporary Reports, edited and translated by Prof. Dietmar Rothermund, was first published in 1961 to celebrate Tagore's centenary by the Max Mueller Bhavan, New Delhi. The contributions by contemporary scholars and writers who came in contact with him at that time are not only interesting because of what they tell us about Tagore, but also illustrate contemporary German thought in its quest for new values and ideals. It ends with Tagore's poem in English, The Child, which he wrote in 1930 in Germany, that Prof. Rothermund describes as "a testimony of a sudden inspiration and a surprising vision". The second part carries an article entitled "Tagore and Germany" by Satinder Kumar Lambah, former Ambassador of India in Germany, first published by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations in the journal `Indien in der Gegenwart' in 1996. The author reviews Tagore's three visits to Germany, emphasizing the vitality of the cultural interaction that was set off by this "spiritual ambassador of India ... interpreting through his works and lectures the timeless message of an ancient country to a world that, in the wake of the First World War, was restless, confused and uncertain". The third part contains three essays on Rabindranath Tagore based on lectures delivered by Dr. Martin Kampchen in India and Bangladesh. Through his translations of Tagore's poetry, his biography of the poet in German and several studies on Tagore's relationship with Germany, the author has contributed substantially to introducing Tagore to a wider public.

Book excerpt: Nobel Prize-winning author Rabindranath Tagore’s most ambitious work Gora unfolds against the vast, dynamic backdrop of Bengal under British rule, a divided society struggling to envisage an emerging nation. It is an epic saga of India’s nationalist awakening, viewed through the eyes of one young man, an orthodox Hindu who defines himself against the British colonialist culture and finds himself approaching his nationalist identity through the prism of organized religion. First published in 1907, Gora questions the dogmas and presuppositions inherent in nationalist thought like few books have dared to do. This new, lucid and vibrant translation brings the complete and unabridged text of the classic to a new generation of readers, underlining its contemporary relevance.

Book Tagore and Nationalism

Download or read book Tagore and Nationalism written by K. L. Tuteja and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together eminent Tagore scholars and younger writers to revisit the concepts of nation, nationalism, identity and selfhood, civilization, culture and homeland in Tagore’s writings. As these ideas take up the centre-stage of politics in the subcontinent as also elsewhere in the world in the 21st century, it becomes extremely relevant to revisit his works in this context. Tagore’s ambivalence towards nationalism as an ideology was apparent in the responses in his discussions with Indians and non-Indians alike. Tagore developed the concept of ‘syncretic’ civilization as a basis of nationalist civilizational unity, where society was central, unlike the European model of state-centric civilization. However, as the subterranean tensions of communalism became clear in the early 20th century, Tagore reflexively critiqued his own political position in society. He thus emerged as the critic of the nation/nation-state and in this he shared his deep unease with other thinkers like Romain Rolland and Albert Einstein. This volume for the first time covers the socio-political, historical, literary and cultural concerns relating to Tagore’s efforts towards the 'de-colonization' of the Self. The volume begins with various perspectives on Tagore’s ‘ambivalence’ about nationalism. It encompasses critical examinations of Tagore’s literary works and other art forms as well as adaptations of his works on film. It also reads Tagore’s nationalism in a comparative mode with contemporary thinkers in India and abroad who were engaged in similar debates.

Book Albert Einstein A Complete Biography

Download or read book Albert Einstein A Complete Biography written by Vinod Kumar Mishra and published by Prabhat Prakashan. This book was released on 2023-04-19 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Albert Einstein’s life was extraordinarily complex, even more complicated than his complex equations. Thus, the life of the founder of the fourth dimension was multi-faceted. Sorrows made his life shine like gold. He was engaged in welfare work till the last moment of his life. He did such a marvellous job that after working further on his works, scientists continued to receive doctorates, fellowships, and other awards. He loved children, students, and the poor. He always looked for inventive ways to work for them. By selling his signatures, photos, research papers, and messages, he gathered the necessary means for them. He had a great sense of humour. Einstein was a scientist equivalent to Newton. He was courageous like Bruno and Galileo, like Mahatma Gandhi in simplicity, and selfless like Sri Krishna. Each of his qualities was enough to make him great. The book presents an exploratory view of various aspects of Einstein’s life. I am sure, the life story of this extraordinary personality will prove to be interesting, inspiring, and useful for the readers.

Book excerpt: Poet, novelist, painter and musician Rabindranath Tagore created the modern short story in India. Written in the 1890s, during a period of relative isolation, his best stories—included in this selection—recreate vivid images of life and landscapes. They depict the human condition in its many forms: innocence and childhood; love and loss; the city and the village; the natural and the supernatural. Tagore is India’s great Romantic. These stories reflect his profoundly modern, original vision. Translated and introduced by William Radice, this edition includes selected letters, bibliographical notes and a glossary.
