Book excerpt: In this Sunday Times Top Ten bestselling memoir that 'reads like a thriller', (Joanna Lumley) Colour-Sargent Kailash Limbu shares a riveting account of his life as a Gurkha soldier-marking the first time in its two-hundred-year history that a soldier of the Brigade of Gurkhas has been given permission to tell his story in his own words. In the summer of 2006, Colour-Sargeant Kailash Limbu's platoon was sent to relieve and occupy a police compound in the town of Now Zad in Helmand. He was told to prepare for a forty-eight hour operation. In the end, he and his men were under siege for thirty-one days - one of the longest such sieges in the whole of the Afghan campaign. Kailash Limbu recalls the terrifying and exciting details of those thirty-one days - in which they killed an estimated one hundred Taliban fighters - and intersperses them with the story of his own life as a villager from the Himalayas. He grew up in a place without roads or electricity and didn't see a car until he was fifteen. Kailash's descriptions of Gurkha training and rituals - including how to use the lethal Kukri knife - are eye-opening and fascinating. They combine with the story of his time in Helmand to create a unique account of one man's life as a Gurkha. 'I was completely bowled over by Kailash's book and read it with a beating heart and dry mouth. I felt as though I was at his side, hearing the shells and bullets, enjoying the jokes and listening in the scary dead of night. The skill with which he has included his childhood and training is immense, always discovered with ease in the narrative: it actually felt as though I was watching, was IN a film with him. It brought me nearer than I have ever been not only to the mind of the universal soldier but to a hill boy of Nepal and a hugely impressive Gurkha. I raced through it and couldn't put it down: it reads like a thriller. If you want to know anything about the Gurkhas, read this book, and be prepared for a thrilling and dangerous trip' Joanna Lumley

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nepal, 1767. The tiny kingdom of Gorkha is on the ascendant under its ruler Prithvi Narayan Shah. Over the next few decades, his Gorkhali army establishes a mighty kingdom, the borders of which extend from Kangra in the west to the Teesta river in the east. The territory encompasses a large part of present-day Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and almost all of present-day Nepal and Sikkim. When they are eventually reined in by the mighty British army in 1815, it sparks off a new engagement between the imperial power and Nepal. Impressed by the fighting abilities on display, the British army begins recruiting them. The Gurkhas (the prevalent spelling today) go on to serve with distinction in many theatres of war over the next hundred-odd years, their exploits in World War I and II earning them a number of bravery medals. With Indian independence in 1947 comes further change: the Gurkhas are now split across three armies: the British, Indian and the Nepalese. Ayo Gorkhali by Tim I. Gurung, a former British Gurkha, is the first work of history by a member of the community and brings alive the story of a people who have served flags other than their own with honour, even as they have attempted to keep their native warrior traditions alive in letter and spirit. The history of the Gurkha serviceman is one that goes beyond soldiering and bravery-it is in equal measure a story of the resilient human spirit, and of a tiny community that carved for itself a niche in world history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gurkhas have served with the British for almost 200 years, first with the army of the East India Company, then with the Indian Army of the Raj, and then in 1947 becoming an integral part of the British Army. This anthology of articles from The Kukri, the Gurkha regimental journals, by J.P. Cross covers much of the past sixty years of their history, taking in the last days of the Second World War and the Indonesian Confrontation in the 1960s, and also gives an insight into the everyday life, culture and beliefs of these renowned soldiers. As a Gurkha officer, J.P. Cross had many unusual experiences in his long career: in 1945, for example, he was attached to a Japanese battalion in Indochina that was fighting for the British against the Viet Minh, and the only photograph taken of this Japanese unit finally laying down its weapons appears in this book. Later, he just managed to resolve a potentially deadly dispute between an offended Gurkha and a visiting South Vietnamese trainee at the Jungle Warfare School. He also describes several seemingly supernatural experiences whilst serving with troops from a culture where such things are firmly believed in.This is a unique anthology of articles drawn from an equally unique military career and a relationship with the Gurkhas that has lasted for over half a century.

Book excerpt: In The Excellent Volume On The Gurkhas Compiled Under The Orders Of The Govt. Of India By Lieut. Col. Eden Vansittart, And Recently Issued As One Of The Handbooks For The Indian Army. There Is An Interesting Chapter On Customs, Manners, And Characteristics Of The Gurkhas. Col. Vansittart Does Not Profess That His Observations Are Particularly Original, And He Has Drawn Freely On Many Distinguished Writers Who Have Made A Close Study Of These Interesting People. But On The Other Hand, He Has Had A Long Personal Acquaintance With Them, And Even While He Writes In Terse Sentences More Like The Phraseology Of Drill Book Than An Effort In Literature, The Effect Is Far From Displeasing. It Gives Indeed A Sharp And Vivid Impression Of The People And Of Their Manners, Which Has Not Been Surpassed In Any Other Work. Of Physical Appearance, After Describing The Mixed Origin Of The Race, The Colonel Remarks: I Doubt Anyone Being Also To Fell The Difference Between Any Magars, Gurangs, Limbus, Rais And Sunwars . Three Hundred Years Before Christ Buddhism Flourished In Nepal And It Is Still Nominally The Faith Of Most Newars, But Hinduism Is Steadily Displacing It, And Col. Vansittart Thinks That Possibly Buddhism May Have Entirely Disappeared A Century Hence. Social Relations Appear To Be Governed More By Custom, Than By The Fixed Rules, And Superstitution Prevails So Widely That The Most Ordinary Occurrence Of Everyday Life Are Referred To Supernatural Agency, Frequently To The Malevolent Action Of Some Demon. Marriage Is Still Arranged In Childhood, And Involves The Parents In Costly Feasts And Presents. A Man Whose Wife Dies May Marry Again, But A Widow Must Not Do So, Though It Is Not Considered Disgraceful For Her To Form Part Another Man S Household. Divorce Is Very Easy If Both Parties Agree To It. A Husband Has To Pay Rs. 40 For His Freedom, But The Woman Is Required To Find Rs. 40 For His Freedom, But The Woman Is Required To Find Rs. 160. If The Money Is Available, The Remainder Of The Process Is Very Simple. Two Pieces Of Split Bamboo Are Tied Together And Placed On Two Mud Balls, And The Money Is Laid Beside Them. If Either Party Takes Up The Bamboos, Breaks Them And Sicks Up The Money The Other Part Can Go His Or Her Way In Peace And Amity, And Marry Again Legally. Col. Vansittart Hs Many Observations To Make On The Peculiarity Of The Several Tribes Or Families, And Show The Great Qualities Most Of Them Possess As Soldiers. His Book In Fact Is One That Every Officer Who Has To Deal With The Gurkhas Will Find It Advantageous To Read, As To Keep As A Work Of Reference.

Download or read book The Gurkha Way written by John Sadler and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 18th century in the town of Gorkha, just north of Kathmandu, ruler Prithvi Narayan fought campaigns against his neighbors and the British. During the fighting his warriors, renowned for their aggression and courage, gained the respect of the British, who appreciated that the steadfast warriors would make excellent soldiers. Upon the declaration of peace in 1816, a partnership was born. This alliance would play a vital role in UK defense over the next two centuries, from surviving the Indian Mutiny of 1857 and fighting in the jungles of Burma to the Khyber Pass, which would keep the Gurkhas in action for ninety years. The First World War sent the Regiment to the trenches, where battalion after battalion was decimated. Some 20 Gurkha battalions were deployed in the Second World War, which was soon increased to 45 following Dunkirk. Around 250,000 Gurkha soldiers would serve and were deployed most significantly in North Africa but also served with distinction in the Italian Campaign and Monte Cassino, as well as the decisive battles of Imphal and Kohima in the Far East. while the Gurkhas saw a drop in overall numbers post-war, they have continued to make integral contributions to many operations, including the Falklands and in Afghanistan, which this book examines extensively, with a special focus on Operation Herrick. In The Gurkha Way, John Sadler tells the story of the Gurkhas from their inception to modern day through interviews, unpublished diaries and correspondence. With over 200 years' experience, these steadfastly loyal soldiers are a link to an imperial past but also a key component of the modern British army. There is no other comparable unit in any of the world’s armies, (with the obvious exception of the Indian Army), or one more respected and loved by the British.
