Download or read book The Poetics and Hermeneutics of Pain and Pleasure written by Bootheina Majoul and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-02 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pain and pleasure are at the heart of human experiences and literary journeys. This book takes the title of Roland Barthes’s text on the pleasure of writing as a starting point for the discussion of other different wor(l)ds and cartographies of pain and pleasure. Set against the Aristotelian delineation of pleasure as the major principle that should govern a literary endeavor, this volume investigates alternative reflections on the themes of pleasure and pain. Thinking about the ways through which expressions of pain and pleasure may affect the writer and the reader as experiences of other pursuits of the human imagination can place or displace, soothe or enrage, and inspire or discourage the individual search for meaning. By engaging with different theories and expressions, it is possible to understand what pain and pleasure have done in the history of humanity, rather than merely looking at them as representations of others’ distant experiences. This volume entails new reflections on the expressions of pain and pleasure to create new meanings for these words in a world vying for expressions of power with and without bliss.
Download or read book Bungi Gungi written by CC Mandl and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2008-01-17 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RULES AT WORK and home are of paramount importance. Nigel Bullstone, however, has no respect for parameters of any kind. Behind exemplary behaviour and pressed suits, he enjoys a wildly different life in his head. This deception is exposed by chance, and his livid father books him into a hard-line motivational course to straighten him out. His journey to absolution is waylaid when his car and his nerves break down en-route. A stranger called Winston rescues him from the roadside; in a mutinous state he accepts a dodgy invitation to go camping in lieu of obeying orders, and then learns that Winston's openly hostile friend, Ramon, is to join them. Stressed out, his unfettered thoughts run amok. He finds himself poised on the edge of madness and the Highest Bungi Jump on Earth; the stupefying leap into nothingness produces a bizarre entity that claims to be his Alter Ego and Personal Counsel. And it is not alone. Ramon has acquired one, and Winston has had one all along. Nigel's life takes on a new perspective.
Download or read book Blues to Blood written by Donald J. Darcy and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-08-20 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this compelling memoir that spans a musicians incredible ride through fifty-four years of life, Donald Darcy provides a glimpse into his journey through a world of music, drugs, and alcoholism, ultimately illustrating that recovery is possible for anyone with a desire to change. A professional singer and songwriter, Donald details his life during the post-war modulation of the late 1950s, the turbulent 1960s, the drug-soaked 1970s and 1980s, and finally, the introspective 1990s that he has nicknamed The Age of Recovery. As he shares the process of how he became addicted to alcohol and drugs, Donald chronicles his once-in-a-lifetime experiences that transported him from Carnegie Hall to Monterey Pop and beyond while educating others about the telltale symptoms of addiction. As he explains how he embraced a spiritual awakening and his subsequent recovery, Donald also shares his opinions about drug addiction, treatment, and genetic dispositions that may cause addiction. Blues to Blood illuminates the path of addiction by providing a self-disclosing, real-life story that offers an in-depth understanding for alcoholics, drug addicts, parents, or friends about the plight of addiction, the destruction it leaves in its path, and the inner-peace that recovery brings.

Download or read book Slang written by Paul Dickson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether you want to be privy to the inside banter of the boardroom, backroom or the Washington Beltway, Slang is an indispensable resource, and a lot of fun. Slang is evidence that the spoken language is continually changing to meet new needs for verbal expressions, tailored to changing realities and perceptions. Unlike most slang dictionaries that list entries alphabetically, Slang takes on modern American English one topic at a time, from "auctionese" to "computerese", the drug trade and sports slang. Slang was originally published by Pocket Books in 1990 in paperback and revised in 1998 in hardcover and paperback. The new Slang has 50% new material, including new chapters on slang associated with work cubicles, gaming, hip hop, and coffeehouses. Dickson brings slang into the twenty-first century with such blogger slang as TMPMITW, which stands for "the most powerful man in the world" (the president). Whether you want to be privy to the inside banter of the boardroom, backroom or the Washington Beltway, Slang is an indispensable resource, and a lot of fun.
