Book Advanced Energetic Materials

Download or read book Advanced Energetic Materials written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-01-30 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced energetic materialsâ€"explosive fill and propellantsâ€"are a critical technology for national security. While several new promising concepts and formulations have emerged in recent years, the Department of Defense is concerned about the nation's ability to maintain and improve the knowledge base in this area. To assist in addressing these concerns, two offices within DOD asked the NRC to investigate and assess the scope and health of the U.S. R&D efforts in energetic materials. This report provides that assessment. It presents several findings about the current R&D effort and recommendations aimed at improving U.S. capabilities in developing new energetic materials technology. This study reviewed U.S. research and development in advanced energetics being conducted by DoD, the DoE national laboratories, industries, and academia, from a list provided by the sponsors. It also: (a) reviewed papers and technology assessments of non-U.S. work in advanced energetics, assessed important parameters, such as validity, viability, and the likelihood that each of these materials can be produced in quantity; (b) identified barriers to scale-up and production, and suggested technical approaches for addressing potential problems; and (c) suggested specific opportunities, strategies, and priorities for government sponsorship of technologies and manufacturing process development.

Book Rarefaction Wave Gun Propulsion

Download or read book Rarefaction Wave Gun Propulsion written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RArefaction waVE guN (RAVEN) propulsion constitutes a novel means to dramatically reduce the recoil momentum and heat imparted to future cannons during firing. The method may be considered a hybrid propulsion technology with features common to both closed-breech cannons and recoilless rifles. Reduction of recoil and gun heating would greatly facilitate large caliber gun integration within light future combat system (FCS) vehicles. Analysis of a RAVEN launcher comparable to the current 120-mm M256 firing an M829 kinetic energy round would impose 75% less recoil momentum and reduce barrel heating at the muzzle by 50%.

  • Author : William Andrews
  • Publisher : Pen and Sword Military
  • Release : 2023-06-30
  • ISBN : 1399042394
  • Pages : 578 pages

Download or read book Tank Gun Systems written by William Andrews and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about the use of tanks in battle. Little, however, has appeared about the gunnery systems that are at their core. This book describes and examines the main gun systems of medium and heavy tanks from first use in 1916 in World War I to those fielded in numbers to the end of World War II in 1945, including tanks of the interwar period. Specifically considered are guns of a calibre greater than 35 mm, which have been deployed in numbers greater than 100. The emphasis is on guns mounted in turrets on heavier tracked armored fighting vehicles (greater than 15 tonnes) which were considered tanks. There are, though, exceptions, in that the naval 6 pounder guns in First World War British tanks, as well as the 75 mm guns in French medium tanks of the same period (all turretless) are included. The treatment of gun systems includes sighting and fire control equipment, gun laying equipment, mounts and the array of munitions fired, as well as the actual gun, including its, barrel, cradle, breech, firing mechanism, sights and recoil system. Related to this are issues of gun handling (loading and unloading), ammunition design and rates of fire. Also examined are the maximum impulse and energy generated by firing some of the munitions available that must be absorbed by the gun recoil system.

Book A Propulsion System Comparison Study for the 120 mm Anti Armor Cannon

Download or read book A Propulsion System Comparison Study for the 120 mm Anti Armor Cannon written by Paul G. Baer and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We explore the effect of advanced propulsion technologies on the performance potential of a 120-mm high performance cannon. The current 120-mm gun using conventional granular propellant operates at a peak pressure of 505 MPa and accelerates a 7.1 kg saboted projectile with a kinetic energy penetrator to a velocity of 1650 m/s. We predict that performance increases on the order of 25% are possible in theory for the best of the advanced propulsion concepts. In practice a 10 to 15% increase is a more realistic upper limit. The use of a 30% longer gun tube operating at a 15% higher peak breech pressure results in an almost 10% increase in muzzle velocity. Relatively small increases in muzzle velocity such as these can result in significant improvements in overall gun system effectiveness.

Book Parameters for Optimizing a Traveling Charge Gun System

Download or read book Parameters for Optimizing a Traveling Charge Gun System written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traveling charge(TC)concept is a solid propellant propulsion technique thought by ballisticians to offer the prospect of muzzle exit velocities in the 2-3 km/s range without the high breech pressures required of conventional gun propulsion systems. Previous work has demonstrated that the XNOVAKTC computer code is a reliable tool for simulating TC gun firings when compared to experimental results and it was felt that the code could be used to address realistic questions associated with the TC concept. An important question is how to tailor both the booster and traveling charge to obtain optimized ballistic performance. This study provides guidelines for optimizing gun systems and assessing the applicability of these guidelines to a 14-mm(gun) test fixture. The XNOVAKTC computer code is used to investigate parameters which significantly impact performance. The base study is performed on a hypothetical 14-mm gun with pressure and propellant constraints attainable in this system. A general set of guidelines is developed for optimal performance in the 14-mm gun. Study results, when applied to the 14-mm test fixture at BRL, indicate that the traveling charge effect is real and demonstrable, yielding increased velocities at lower chamber pressures. If the obstacle in timing TC ignition and burnout can be overcome, potential velocity improvements of up to 30% appear possible. (edc).

Book Rocket Propellant Technology

Download or read book Rocket Propellant Technology written by Jawaharlal "Ram" Ramnarace and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2016-01-11 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rocket Propulsion has come of age. Although its potentialities and capabilities in many areas have been recognized for centuries, it is only in recent years that scientists have had the materials and the manufacturing techniques at their command so they could control and direct the tremendous forces available. Space exploration and manned flights by astronauts have brought the science of rocketry to the attention of the general public. It has also stimulated the interest of students at all levels of advancement in the technical details of space flight. Rocket Propellant Technologies is written for serious students of astronautics. This volume reviews briefly the history of rocketry and the fundamental principles connected with rocket propulsion. Types of propellants, the chemical reactions involved, and the techniques used in manufacturing are explained. The merits of solid and liquid fuels are enumerated. Exotic propellants of the future are discussed, with reasons why their development is essential. Finally, the safety aspects of manufacturing and testing rocket propellants are given in detail. The Amateur Rocket Association under whose guidance this series has been prepared, serves as a focal point for many related activities, bringing new ideas to the attention of its members and offering suggestions for future lines of research.
