Book The Truman Gumshoes

Download or read book The Truman Gumshoes written by J.K. Van Dover and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-01-31 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hard-boiled style of detective fiction emerged in America in the years after the First World War. In the late 1940s, following the Depression, the New Deal, and the Second World War, a new generation of young writers revisited the conventions governing the fictional private eye, and began to move him (the tough detective was still always male) and his world in new directions. This book examines the work of the four most important writers of this second generation of hard-boiled fiction. It offers the first substantial literary analysis of the Max Thursday novels of Wade Miller and the Carney Wilde novels of Bart Spicer, and it develops new perspectives on the well-known Mike Hammer novels of Mickey Spillane and the Lew Archer novels of Ross Macdonald. A particular focus is upon the theme of the detective's status as a loner who succeeds in discovering truth and achieving justice because he works outside organized social structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular fiction, with its capacity for diversion, can mask important cultural observations within a framework that is often overlooked in the academic world. Works thought to be merely "escapist" can often be more seriously mined for revelations regarding the worlds they portray, especially those of the disenfranchised. As detective fiction has slowly earned critical respect, more authors from minority groups have chosen it as their medium. Chicana/o authors, previously reluctant to write in an underestimated genre that might further marginalize them, have only entered the world of detective fiction in the past two decades. In this book, the first comprehensive study of Chicano/a detective fiction, Ralph E. Rodriguez examines the recent contributions to the genre by writers such as Rudolfo Anaya, Lucha Corpi, Rolando Hinojosa, Michael Nava, and Manuel Ramos. Their works reveal the struggles of Chicanas/os with feminism, homosexuality, familia, masculinity, mysticism, the nationalist subject, and U.S.-Mexico border relations. He maintains that their novels register crucial new discourses of identity, politics, and cultural citizenship that cannot be understood apart from the historical instability following the demise of the nationalist politics of the Chicana/o movement of the 1960s and 1970s. In contrast to that time, when Chicanas/os sought a unified Chicano identity in order to effect social change, the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s have seen a disengagement from these nationalist politics and a new trend toward a heterogeneous sense of self. The detective novel and its traditional focus on questions of knowledge and identity turned out to be the perfect medium in which to examine this new self.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These five novels in the Gumshoe Collection bring back the style of Mickey Spillane and Raymond Chandler. Each one with a rock-solid core delivered with an explosive punch and snappy dialogue that sometimes may be risqué , but is always humorous. When ex-IRS Agent Mortimer— call me “ Mort” — Angel launches his new gumshoe career, he immediately becomes Reno' s infamous finder of bodies and/or body parts. In Gumshoe, it' s the mayor' s missing head; in Gumshoe for Two, it' s the hand of a U.S. Senator; in Gumshoe on the Loose, it' s the hanging body of a missing rapper; in Gumshoe Rock, it' s a skull, stripped clean and white; in Gumshoe in the Dark, it' s the dead body of his female companion' s mother. PI-in-training-Mort definitely has a special knack, as does Rob Leininger, in delivering gritty crime novels sprinkled with spicy humor. All five books in the Gumshoe Collection are perfect for fans of Janet Evanovich, Carl Hiaasen, and Tim Dorsey

Book excerpt: Ten-year LAPD sergeant, Walter Sunderland was about to cross off another item on his personal bucket list. He would soon be transferring out of uniform patrol and head downtown to the elite Robbery Homicide Division as an LAPD detective. Working RHD was his dream job and like most things in his life, whatever he set his mind to, he usually succeeded. Married to a beautiful woman who made twice the money he did selling million-dollar homes in the trendy upscale neighborhood of Porter Ranch in the northwest San Fernando Valley, where they now lived themselves, was just the frosting on the cake. It would only take one act of pure stupidity to rear its ugly head, that would bring his world crashing down around him. Now, fired from the police department, divorced from his wife, and after serving a short prison sentence, he was just a heartbeat away from becoming a down and out homeless street person himself. Living in a cheap downtown hotel that overlooked skid row, he was now working menial part-time jobs trying to keep his head above water to survive. It would be the very woman who accused him of rape under the color of authority that got him fired from the force and sent him to jail, who was now pleading for his help. She herself was now the number one suspect in the murder of her former husband and with limited funds, she had nowhere to turn. The two unlikely pair would join forces to spar with her former dead husband’s new wife along with the LAPD detectives investigating his murder and at the same time, deal with their own ongoing mistrust for one another. Without the use of any of the LAPD’s resources provided to regular sworn detectives on the job, Sunderland was now being measured by everyone around him as nothing more than a washed-up Gumshoe, a term he hated with contempt. Even so, he now would have to rely on his own wit and expertise as he follows up on his instincts, leads and scenarios to come up with answers he so desperately needed. Those answers wouldn’t come easy after hitting one roadblock after another as he tried to piece together the realities and assumptions that no one else was willing to tackle. Together, Walt Sunderland and Gretchen Quinn’s journey would take them to an unpredictable and shocking conclusion.

Book The Stiletto Gumshoe

Download or read book The Stiletto Gumshoe written by C. J. Thomas and published by CJT Books. This book was released on 2024-02-24 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CHICAGO, 1959: Meet Sharon Gardner (Real name? Sasha Garodnowicz, not that she'd ever tell you), more at home atop a cocktail lounge barstool than an office's steno chair. Still, what she really needs is a job. Any job. So, when she lands behind the reception desk at a one-man private detective firm, for double the money she's used to and working for a handsome charmer straight out of the lurid crime magazines she devours on the sly, it almost seems too good to be true. Because, of course, it is. Soon enough, vicious thugs with badges have her on the run in the south-side's dark alleys and bungalow rows, where Sharon's suddenly swept up in a deadly extortion scheme and widespread civic corruption. People have been murdered, and she just might be next. But it's tough to chase crooks and killers when you're running in heels. The Stiletto Gumshoe gives a nod to 1950's/1960's private eye series, swapping that era's many iconic hard-drinking, hard-fighting, hard-loving, hard-boiled P.I.'s for a memorable, streetwise twenty-two year old just struggling to get by in a mid-twentieth century man's world that may be right on the cusp of big social changes, but definitely isn't there yet!

Book excerpt: "As much as Scalzi has the scientific creativity of a Michael Crichton, he also has the procedural chops of a Stephen J. Canell to craft a whodunit with buddy-cop charm and suspects aplenty—most of them in someone else's body." —USA Today John Scalzi returns with Head On, the standalone follow-up to the New York Times bestselling and critically acclaimed Lock In. Chilling near-future SF with the thrills of a gritty cop procedural, Head On brings Scalzi's trademark snappy dialogue and technological speculation to the future world of sports. Hilketa is a frenetic and violent pastime where players attack each other with swords and hammers. The main goal of the game: obtain your opponent’s head and carry it through the goalposts. With flesh and bone bodies, a sport like this would be impossible. But all the players are “threeps,” robot-like bodies controlled by people with Haden’s Syndrome, so anything goes. No one gets hurt, but the brutality is real and the crowds love it. Until a star athlete drops dead on the playing field. Is it an accident or murder? FBI Agents and Haden-related crime investigators, Chris Shane and Leslie Vann, are called in to uncover the truth—and in doing so travel to the darker side of the fast-growing sport of Hilketa, where fortunes are made or lost, and where players and owners do whatever it takes to win, on and off the field. Just because I have started dictating into a hands-free tape player to keep records and perhaps help me solve a case I am working on and to have memoirs for my later years, people have a tendency to think that I am talking to myself. Perhaps, in a way, I am. These new gadgets, they have no tape or CD and are marvelous. I have an earpiece that looks like the hands-free phone headset that I talk into. The tape player, which is no bigger than a candy bar, stays in my pocket. At the end of the day, I can download onto my stick on my computer until I have a chance to type them onto paper. So let them look on. I will smile and keep on talking.
