Book excerpt: USA Today best-selling author "Mortimer Angel is my favorite private eye." —John Lescroart, New York Times best-selling author Embezzlement case turns murderous Early in July, northern Nevada's senior Internal Revenue Service agent, Ronald Soranden—disliked by every agent in the Reno IRS office—vanished without a trace. In September, he makes a dramatic reappearance, of sorts. His skull—stripped clean and white—is dropped through the slashed top of a Mustang convertible. The vehicle belongs to Lucy Landry, PI Mortimer Angel's gorgeous young assistant now working with him on a seemingly unrelated embezzlement case. But Mort is a former IRS field agent in Reno. He'd done his time during the tyrannical reign of Soranden, quitting, he says, "when I discovered I have a soul." Now that his former boss's head has appeared, he and Lucy find them themselves under the annoying surveillance of a pair of IRS enforcement agents. When the FBI are brought in to investigate the murder, Mort and Lucy realize shocking details about their own case—primarily Soranden's involvement. It becomes evident that events and suspects of the embezzlement case and Soranden's murder are heavily entangled with those enmeshed in an ugly case of blackmail. Mort and Lucy are roped tighter and tighter into the Soranden investigation while they grapple with the deadliest situation of their PI careers. Mortimer Angel has been in harrowing, lethal situations before and has suffered incalculable losses, but none more horrifying than the trap embedded in Gumshoe Rock. The perfect mix of John Sanford and Carl Hiaasen

Each one with a rock-solid core delivered with an explosive punch and snappy dialogue that sometimes may be risqué , but is always humorous. When ex-IRS Agent Mortimer— call me “ Mort” — Angel launches his new gumshoe career, he immediately becomes Reno' s infamous finder of bodies and/or body parts. In Gumshoe, it' s the mayor' s missing head; in Gumshoe for Two, it' s the hand of a U.S. Senator; in Gumshoe on the Loose, it' s the hanging body of a missing rapper; in Gumshoe Rock, it' s a skull, stripped clean and white; in Gumshoe in the Dark, it' s the dead body of his female companion' s mother. PI-in-training-Mort definitely has a special knack, as does Rob Leininger, in delivering gritty crime novels sprinkled with spicy humor. All five books in the Gumshoe Collection are perfect for fans of Janet Evanovich, Carl Hiaasen, and Tim Dorsey

At dusk on a deserted Nevada highway in a thunderstorm, ex-IRS agent and PI-in-training Mortimer Angel comes across a pretty, scantily-clad girl—Harper Leland. She's cold and alone, thirty miles from the nearest town. When Mort offers her a ride, she orders him out of his truck at gunpoint. She tries to take off, but he cuts the valve stem on the rear tire. Realizing she's in trouble, he wants to help—but with no spare tire, he devises a creative way to get them out of the hills—slowly, precariously balanced on three tires. On their way down, a rough-looking man stops and asks Mort if he has "seen anyone up in the hills." Mort realizes the guy is after Harper, who is hiding in the truck. Thus begins a cat-and-mouse chase in northeast Nevada that continues even after Mort finds the attorney general—Harper's mother—dead in the trunk of a car. In time, Mort's wife, Lucy, is also pulled into the case, which becomes the deadliest of Mort's career. Book Rock Creek

  • Publisher : Gatekeeper Press
  • Release : 2024-05-13
  • ISBN : 1662950195
  • Pages : 279 pages

Download or read book Rock Creek written by Kevin Flynn and published by Gatekeeper Press. This book was released on 2024-05-13 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part murder mystery, part political thriller, Rock Creek is an epic work of historical fiction set in Washington, D.C. It's the most important city in the world in 1952, but at its heart it's still a small Southern town deeply divided along race and class boundaries. With big themes, bigger characters, and enduring spirit, Rock Creek expertly weaves an evocative tale in small, ineffable moments, telling the story of what happens to those who try to cross D.C.’s dividing lines. Emily Rose is a beautiful Capitol Hill staffer with a tragic past, rooted in the Holocaust, that she can never quite seem to escape. She's dumped and abandoned in Rock Creek Park, a lush urban wilderness with its own haunted history. Shane Kinnock is a homicide detective at the lowest point of his life and career, still shell-shocked from the war and scarred by loss. He sees the prospect of redemption in the mystery of Emily’s death, but he'll find that her story draws him close to insanity. Race and intolerance, injustice and protest, publishing and politics, sex and ambition, gambling and government: Rock Creek brings to life a time and place that are so distant, yet still seem so close. In advance of its 2024 publication, Rock Creek has been praised by James Grady, author of Six Days of the Condor, David Swinson, author of The Second Girl, and Andy Kroll, author of A Death on W Street: The Murder of Seth Rich and the Age of Conspiracy.

Book Tracking Truth

  • Author : Sherrilyn Roush
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2005-11-10
  • ISBN : 0199274738

Download or read book Tracking Truth written by Sherrilyn Roush and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-11-10 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracking Truth presents a unified treatment of knowledge, evidence, and epistemological realism and anti-realism about scientific theories. A wide range of knowledge-related phenomena, especially but not only in science, strongly favour the idea of tracking as the key to what makes something knowledge. A subject who tracks the truth - an idea first formulated by Robert Nozick - has the ability to follow the truth through time and changing circumstances. Epistemologistsrightly concluded that Nozick's theory was not viable, but a simple revision of that view is not only viable but superior to other current views. In this new tracking account of knowledge, in contrast to the old view, knowledge has the property of closure under known implication, and troublesome counterfactualsare replaced with well-defined conditional probability statements. Of particular interest are the new view's treatment of skepticism, reflective knowledge, lottery propositions, knowledge of logical truth, and the question why knowledge is power in the Baconian sense.Ideally, evidence indicates a hypothesis and discriminates it from other possible hypotheses. This is the idea behind a tracking view of evidence, and Sherrilyn Roush provides a defence of a confirmation theory based on the Likelihood Ratio. The accounts of knowledge and evidence she offers provide a deep and seamless explanation of why having better evidence makes one more likely to have knowledge. Roush approaches the question of epistemological realism about scientific theories through thequestion what is required for evidence, and rejects both traditional realist and traditional anti-realist positions in favour of a new position which evaluates realist claims in a piecemeal fashion according to a general standard of evidence. The results show that while anti-realists were immodest indeclaring a priori what science could not do, realists were excessively sanguine about how far our actual evidence has so far taken us.
