The Author Sets Out as a Captain of a Ship--His Men Conspire against Him, Confine Him a Long Time to His Cabin and Set Him on Shore in an Unknown Land--He Travels Up into the Country--The Yahoos, A Strange Sort of Animal, Described -- The Author Meets Two Houyhnhnms. I CONTINUED at home with my wife and children about five months, in a very happy condition, if I could have learned the lesson of knowing when I was well. I left my poor wife big with child, and accepted an advantageous offer made me to be captain of the Adventure, a stout merchantman of 350 tons: for I understood navigation well, and being grown weary of a surgeon's employment at sea, which, however, I could exercise upon occasion, I took a skilful young man of that calling, one Robert Purefoy, into my ship. We set sail from Portsmouth upon the 7th day of September, 1710; on the 14th we met with Captain Pocock of Bristol, at Teneriffe, who was going to the Bay of Campeachy to cut logwood. On the 16th he was parted from us by a storm; I heard, since my return, that his ship foundered, and none escaped but one cabin-boy. He was an honest man, and a good sailor, but a little too positive in his own opinions, which was the cause of his destruction, as it had been of several others. For, if he had followed my advice he might have been safe at home with his family at this time as well as myself. I had several men die in my ship of calentures, so that I was forced to get recruits out of Barbadoes and the Leeward Islands, where I touched, by the direction of the merchants who employed me; which I had soon too much cause to repent; for I found afterward that most of them had been buccaneers. I had fifty hands on...

Book Gulliver s Travels and Other Writings

Download or read book Gulliver s Travels and Other Writings written by Jonathan Swift and published by Bantam Classics. This book was released on 1984-09-01 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read “It is universally read, from the cabinet council to the nursery,” remarked Alexander Pope when Gulliver's Travels was published in 1726. One of the unique books of world literature, Swift's masterful satire describes the astonishing voyages of one Lemuel Gulliver, a ship's surgeon, to surreal kingdoms inhabited by miniature people and giants, quack philosophers and scientists, horses endowed with reason and men who behave like beasts. Written with great wit and invention, Gulliver's Travels is a savage parody on man and his institutions that has captivated readers for nearly three centuries. As bestselling author and critic Allan Bloom observed: “Gulliver's Travels is an amazing rhetorical achievement. Swift had not only the judgment with which to arrive at a reasoned view of the world but the fancy by means of which he could re-create that world in a form which teaches where argument fails and which satisfies all while misleading none.” This representative collection of Swift’s major writings includes the complete Gulliver’s Travels as well as A Tale of a Tub, “The Battle of the Books,” “A Modest Proposal,” “An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity,” “The Bickerstaff Papers,” and many more of his brilliantly satirical works. Here too are selections from Swift’s poetry and portions of his Journal to Stella. Swift’s savage ridicule, corrosive wit, and sparkling humor are fully displayed in this comprehensive collection.

Book Gulliver s Voyage to Phantomimia A transcreation by Douglas Robinson

Download or read book Gulliver s Voyage to Phantomimia A transcreation by Douglas Robinson written by Volter KILPI and published by Zeta Books. This book was released on with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the great Finnish modernist genius Volter Kilpi died in the summer of 1939 at the age of 64, he left behind an unfinished novel manuscript about Lemuel Gulliver’s fifth voyage—this one supposedly to the North Pole, though along the way the ship is sucked into a vortex near the Pole and hurtled two centuries ahead in time. He and three surviving shipmates end up in London in 1938, wondering how to get back to their time. In addition to translating what Kilpi wrote into Swiftian English, Douglas Robinson has here written the incomplete novel to the end, based on Kilpi’s report to his son on how he planned to return the men to 1738. Because Kilpi also playfully pretended to have “found” the original English manuscript, presumably written by Lemuel Gulliver himself, and “translated” it into Finnish, Robinson goes along with that pretense and pretends to have rediscovered and “edited” and “annotated” the original English manuscript—written, perhaps, not by Gulliver but (at least partly) by Jonathan Swift. The addition of Robinson’s English translation of Volter Kilpi’s “translator’s preface” and two fictional constructs—anonymous “random notes toward a vorticist manifesto” (1914) and an ersatz “reader’s report” by an imaginary Finnish Kilpi scholar named Julius Nyrkki—transforms the entire volume into a postmodern “critical edition” that would have tickled Volter Kilpi pink.

Book A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms

Download or read book A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms written by Jonathan Swift and published by . This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to legend, when the author and Historical Long Rider Jonathan Swift made an equestrian journey across Ireland, he arrived at a remarkable conclusion. The beloved mare who carried him faithfully was a paragon of reason, understanding and sympathy, unlike his fellow human beings. At the conclusion of the ride, Swift penned his famous book, Gulliver's Travels. It told the tale of Lemuel Gulliver, a ship's captain who sailed to four remarkable kingdoms. While the simple children's version focuses on the little people of Lilliput, it was the talking horses found in the fourth adventure which outraged civilised English society. A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms recounts how Captain Gulliver's crew mutinied and set him ashore on an unknown island. There he encountered a race of savage humanoids who threatened to kill him. The bewildered traveller was rescued by horses, who it turns out could speak and in fact ruled the island. What follows is an astonishing tale that turns man's definition of himself on its head. The naked, warlike and murderous humans are known as Yahoos, a term still used today as a synonym for "ruffian." In order to draw attention to the evils of materialism and elitism, Swift described the Yahoos as savage creatures with selfish habits, who are obsessed with digging pretty stones from the mud. In stark contrast the Houyhnhnms, which in their language means "the perfection of nature," are a race of intelligent horses that enjoy a peaceful society based upon reason. Though he is biologically akin to the Yahoos, Gulliver prefers the company of his benevolent equine hosts. When he learns to converse with the horses, Gulliver attempts to explain human society. His equine hosts are perplexed with the alien concepts of greed, war and injustice. Nor do they have a word for 'lie, ' and must substitute the phrase "to say a thing which is not." When Gulliver reluctantly returns to England, he finds the company of his countrymen, whom he now views as Yahoos, so intolerable that he spends most of his time in the stable near his home. Thus, this equine episode is the keystone of Gulliver's Travels and reflects Swift's disenchantment with popular society. Originally it was believed that A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms was a metaphor used by Swift to highlight England's treatment of slaves as lesser human beings. More recently, it has been described as an early example of animal rights, in that Gulliver's role reversal highlighted how cruelly English horses were treated. First released anonymously in 1726, it sold out in less than a week. Since then, the challenging tale has never been out of print. Nor has there arrived a human who has answered the challenge Swift wrote for his own epitaph. "Go forth, Voyager, and copy, if you can, this vigorous champion of Liberty."

Artwork that bring to life certain episodes in the story Suggestions for further reading and website links that the reader will find informative and helpful Rightly described as 'Hans Christian Andersen for children, Boccacio for adults', Gulliver's Travels is the most celebrated work of Jonathan Swift. Written as an incisive satire on the society and politics of the time, the book went on to become a favourite with children as well. From its very first edition, Gulliver's Travels was popular across all ages. In the book the author uses the medium of travel literature to satirize human nature and society. Through Gulliver's trip to the four fantastical nations, Swift reflects the follies of European culture, especially England. He criticizes European colonialism and the consequent brutality and destruction that was inflicted upon innocent, native populations under the pretext of civilizing them. The protagonist in the book, Lemuel Gulliver, is also the pseudonym under which Swift wrote the book, fearing that the satire may not be received well by the readers and the political establishment. Gulliver is a trusting, gullible man, who by strange twists of fate lands in strange places and has unusual encounters. His experiences in the island of the tiny Lilliputs, the land of the giant Brobdingnagians, the floating island of the Laputians, and the utopian land of the Houyhnhnms provide the ground for criticizing European culture, especially English society. Parallels from real life and incidents of Swift's time emerge as one reads about each voyage, turning the book into a powerful alleagorical commentary. By the end of the story, Swift's criticism of mankind and society becomes so bitter that Gulliver is shown to recoil from human society. He stays away even from his own family. However, the satire, lighthearted in the beginning and scathing towards the end, does not make the book any less enjoyable. Gulliver's Travels remains a timeless classic for adults and an enchanting tale of fantasy for children.
