Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On December 18, 2023, the explosion of a major fuel import and storage facility led to fuel shortages and new urgent financing needs. The blast caused 25 deaths and 457 injured as well as widespread fuel shortages, affecting transportation and economic activity. The relatively strong mining sector is sustaining growth, although growth is expected to decelerate to 4.1 percent in 2024, lower than the 2019-23 average of 5.1 percent. Average inflation is expected to increase to 11 percent in 2024 as fuel shortages pushed up prices. Socio-political tensions persist in the wake of the military coup of September 2021 and the hardship caused by the explosion.

Book excerpt: Following a coup d’état in September 2021 and a year of socio-political tension, the situation has stabilized after the authorities agreed with ECOWAS on a revised, shorter (24-month) transition calendar. While the non-mining sector remains weakened by the subsequent shocks—the pandemic, political uncertainty, the global food and fuel price shock and ensuing food insecurity—overall growth remains buoyant, driven by strong mining production. Inflation hovered around 12 percent for most of 2021 and 2022, despite significant international prices pressures. Food insecurity became increasingly acute during 2022 stemming from the price shock and could be exacerbated next year.

Book Georgia 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report and Statement by the Executive Director for Georgia

This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High frequency estimates suggest a V-shaped recovery with output now poised to return close to 2019 levels already this year, much earlier than expected. Recently COVID-19 case numbers have risen sharply to new highs while vaccinations have also accelerated significantly after a slow start. The recovery has improved the fiscal outlook and the authorities submitted to Parliament a supplementary budget, with GEL 1.2 billion in additional spending roughly equivalent to the expected increase in revenues. The National Bank of Georgia (NBG) has increased the policy rate by 200 basis points to deal with high inflation driven by lagging effects of depreciation, commodity and food price increases, and supply side constraints.

Book Republic of Equatorial Guinea

Download or read book Republic of Equatorial Guinea written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2022-08-03 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-21, and Bata explosions in 2021, struck oil-exporter Equatorial Guinea at a time when its economic vulnerabilities had already been aggravated by a prolonged period of depressed hydrocarbon prices, and seven consecutive years of decline in real GDP. The economy is slowly emerging from the ravages of the 2020-21 shocks, buoyed by higher international oil prices. However, substantial challenges remain: (i) surging food prices and banking sector vulnerabilities cloud the short term, while (ii) declining hydrocarbon productionand the implied decline in external reservesloom over the medium term, especially in light of lagging governance and diversification reform implementation.

Book Turkey 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report and Statement by the Executive Director for Turkey

Download or read book Turkey 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report and Statement by the Executive Director for Turkey written by International Monetary and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-06-11 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Turkey, as in other countries, the human and economic toll of the COVID-19 pandemic has been severe. Thousands of lives have been tragically lost and many livelihoods compromised. The initial policy response to the pandemic—and subsequent sharp growth rebound—set Turkey apart from its peers. Rapid monetary and credit expansion and large liquidity support meant that Turkey was among the few countries to experience positive economic growth in 2020. But these policies also aggravated pre-existing economic and financial vulnerabilities. Higher inflation, increased dollarization, and a large shift in the current account position increased pressure on the lira and gave rise to heavy foreign exchange sales, which led in turn to steep reserve declines from already-low levels. A policy shift in late 2020—mainly towards tighter and more transparent monetary policy and slower credit growth—was both welcome and necessary. But the durability and depth of the shift were called into question in March 2021, following the change in central bank leadership, as the lira weakened markedly and interest rate spreads widened.

Book Algeria 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release and Staff Report and Statement by the Executive Director for Algeria

Download or read book Algeria 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release and Staff Report and Statement by the Executive Director for Algeria written by International Monetary and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concomitant Covid-19 pandemic and oil price shock in 2020 have taken a heavy toll on the Algerian economy and the population. The authorities’ response helped mitigate the social and economic impact of the crisis. Nevertheless, the crisis exacerbated the Algerian economy’s vulnerabilities, making even more urgent the need for a new, more inclusive and sustainable, growth model. A recovery is underway in 2021, but the outlook remains challenging. While the recent rebound in hydrocarbon prices should buoy the recovery and ease immediate financing constraints, addressing long-standing structural challenges will help to realize Algeria’s vast growth potential for the benefit of its population.

Book Africa s Resource Future

Download or read book Africa s Resource Future written by James Cust and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2023-04-20 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role for natural resource wealth in driving Africa’s economic transformation and the implications of the low-carbon transition for resource-rich economies. Resource wealth remains central to most Sub-Saharan African economies, and significant untapped potential is in the ground. Subsoil assets—such as metals, minerals, oil, and gas—are key sources of government revenues, export earnings, and development potential in most countries in the Africa region. Despite large reserves, success in converting subsoil wealth into aboveground sustainable prosperity has been limited. Since the decline in commodity prices in 2014, resource-rich Africa has grown more slowly than the region’s average growth rate. Finding ways to more effectively harness natural resource wealth to drive economic transformation will be central to Africa’s economic future. As the world moves away from fossil fuels in alignment with commitments under the Paris Agreement, Africa’s resource-rich countries face new risks and opportunities. Recent estimates suggest that 80 percent of the world’s proven fossil fuel reserves must remain underground to meet the Paris targets, and much of these stranded reserves may be in Africa. This issue of stranded assets and, relatedly, “stranded nations,†? has major implications for the many African economies that are dependent on petroleum extraction and export. On the other hand, the energy transition will increase demand for raw material inputs involved in clean energy technologies. The transition from fossil fuels to clean energy may create demand by 2050 for 3 billion tons of minerals and metals that are needed to deploy solar, wind, and geothermal energy. How can African economies tap into these opportunities while managing the downside risk to their fossil fuel wealth? Africa’s Resource Future explores these themes and offers policy makers insights to help them navigate the coming years of uncertainty.

Book Tuvalu 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report and Statement by the Executive Director for Tuvalu

Download or read book Tuvalu 2021 Article IV Consultation Press Release Staff Report and Statement by the Executive Director for Tuvalu written by International Monetary and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-08-04 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swift implementation of containment measures, limited spillovers from tourism, and COVID-related fiscal spending financed by buoyant fishing revenues and donor grants have allowed Tuvalu—a fragile Pacific micro-state—avoid a recession in 2020. The economy is expected to expand by 2.5 percent in 2021, supported by fiscal expenditures and resumption of infrastructure projects. But significant challenges remain: Tuvalu is vulnerable to the effects of climate change, its economy is dominated by the public sector, and its revenue base is narrow. Uncertainty around donor commitments complicates fiscal planning.
