The works analyzed span genres—epic, romance, lyric poetry, hagiography, fabliaux—and historical periods from the twelfth century to the late Middle Ages. Contributors examine the complexity of the notion of self through a wide range of lenses, from marginal characters to gender to questions of voice and naming. Studying a variety of texts—including Conte du Graal, Roman de la Rose, Huon de Bordeaux, and the Oxford Roland—they conceptualize the Other Within as an individual who simultaneously exists within a group while remaining foreign to it. These comparisons will include many minor points of resemblance and difference, but the special aim will be to derive from such comparisons more general conclusions in regard to the cyclic relations of the chansons. The plan which will be followed is to give for each source, first, a resume and, second, critical notes upon the same. The resumes, though calculated to give good general views of the sources treated, are intended particularly to bring out points of special interest for discussion and cyclic comparison. Finally, there will be, at the close of the paper, a more general argument in regard to the probable origins of the legends and the development and cyclic relations of the sources studied. The sources which especially receive attention in this paper are, in addition to the Chanson de Willame: Foucon de Candie, Le Sto'fie N erbonesi, Aliscans, Les Enfances Vivien, and La C hevalerie V ivien. They are taken up in the order indicated.

The creation of a past for themselves was of pressing importance to religious communities, enabling them to increase their status and legitimise their existence. This book examines the process in a group of communities from the southern part of Flanders (the monks of Saint-Bertin at Saint-Omer, the community of Saint-Rictrude at Marchiennes and the canons of Saint-Amé at Douai) over a period running from the ninth to the end of the eleventh century. The central contention is that the communities produced their narratives (history, hagiography, charter materials) for a specific time and purpose, frequently as a response to or intended resolution of internal or external crises. The book also discusses how the circumstances which triggered narrative production had an impact not only on the content but also on the form of the texts.
