Book Evaluation of a Louver Guidance Facility Used to Sample Salmon and Trout Emigrants

Download or read book Evaluation of a Louver Guidance Facility Used to Sample Salmon and Trout Emigrants written by Terry Holubetz and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this thesis is an evaluation of a louver facility in the Lemhi River, Idaho. The louver facility was designed to guide juvenile chinook salmon and steelhead trout into a trap in order to sample downstream migrant populations. The study was designed to determine: (1) if the catch in the louver facility was a reliable index of emigrant population size, and (2) if an accurate estimate of the number of emigrants could be obtained through a mark-and-recapture program utilizing louver catches. The louver guidance facility provided a reliable method of estimating numbers of salmon and steelhead smolts that were emigrating from the upper Lemhi River. The louver facility collected a consistent proportion of the migrating chinook salmon and steethead trout smolts from the Lemhi River. Approximately 3 percent of the chinook smolts and 21 percent of the steelhead smolts were captured in the trap. Estimates of smolt numbers for both species were derived by expanding the louver-captured proportion. During 1965, an estimated 325,020 chinook smolts and 9,830 steelhead smolts emigrated from the upper Lemhi River. No estimates could be made for chinook fry emigrants. An estimated 98.6 percent of the steelhead smolts entering the louver facility were guided into the trap. An estimated 83.6 percent of the chinook smolts were guided into the trap. The guiding efficiency for chinook fry was estimated to be 20.2 percent. The efficiency of the louver system was greatest for large migrants and for periods when water temperature was high. The upstream migration barrier guided some steelhead smolts into the louver facility but did not guide chinook smolts. The majority of the chinook smolts migrated in the center portion of the stream.

Book excerpt: Several key study streams in the Salmon River and Clearwater River drainages were snorkeled in the summer of 1995. The current Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) goal is to maintain a parr density at 70% of the rated carrying capacity. All streams snorkeled are considerably below the current goal (6.4% to 54.3% of goal). Weirs were operated in Chamberlain Creek, West Fork Chamberlain Creek, Running Creek, and Rush Creek during the spring adult steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss spawning migration. An adult steelhead migration barrier was operated in Rapid River. Adult steelhead escapements in all but Rapid River are at critically low levels. An adult salmon O. sp. weir was operated in Running Creek using a new passive electronic/video counting facility. Five adult chinook salmon O. tshawytscha were captured on video as they passed the counting facility. A video record of all resident fish in excess of 10 to 12 in was also obtained. The video system performed adequately in most circumstances. Additional testing and modification will continue during the 1996 salmon spawning migration. An upstream migration barrier was operated in Rapid River during the salmon spawning migration. Four adult male salmon were passed above the barrier; no females were captured or passed above the barrier. Rotary screw traps were operated in Running Creek and Rapid River during the spring and fall to monitor the juvenile steelhead and salmon downstream migration. Migration timing in Running Creek indicates that the majority of smolt size fish moved downstream out of Running Creek in the fall and few smolt size fish left Running Creek in the spring. Migration timing at Rapid River indicates a more equal distribution of the smolt size fish moving downstream out of Rapid River in the spring. 1 ref., 9 figs., 7 tabs.
