Book Marine Wastewater Outfalls and Treatment Systems

Download or read book Marine Wastewater Outfalls and Treatment Systems written by Philip J. W. Roberts and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09-19 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wastewater disposal by marine outfalls is proven and effective and is a reliable and cost effective solution with minimal environmental impacts. The design and siting of submarine outfalls is a complex task that relies on many disciplines including oceanography, civil and environmental engineering, marine biology, construction, economics, and public relations. Marine Wastewater Outfalls and Treatment Systems brings these disciplines together and outlines all tasks involved in the planning and design of a wastewater system involving a marine outfall. This book concerns the design of marine wastewater disposal systems: that is an ocean outfall plus treatment plant. All aspects of outfall design and planning are covered, including water quality design criteria, mathematical modelling of water quality and dilution, gathering required oceanographic data, appropriate wastewater treatment for marine discharges, construction materials for marine pipelines, forces on pipelines and outfall design, outfall hydraulics, outfall construction, tunnelled outfalls, operation and maintenance, monitoring, case studies are discussed and methods for gaining public acceptance for the project are presented. Finally, costs for many outfalls around the world are summarized and methods for estimating costs are given. This is the first book to consider all aspects of marine outfall planning and construction. The authors are all extensively involved with outfall schemes and aware of recent developments. The science and technology of all aspects of outfall discharges into coastal waters and estuaries of treated municipal or industrial wastewater has advanced considerably over the past few years. Marine Wastewater Outfalls and Treatment Systems provides an up to date and comprehensive summary of this rapidly developing area.

Travel may involve major changes in altitude, temperature and humidity, and exposure to microbes, animals and insects. The negative impact of sudden changes in the environment can be minimized by taking simple precautions.

Book Environmental Pollutant Exposures and Public Health

Download or read book Environmental Pollutant Exposures and Public Health written by R M Harrison and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both genes and environment have profound effects upon our health. While some environmental factors such as polluted air are high in the public consciousness, there are many other pathways for people’s exposure to toxic chemicals, such as through food, water and contaminated land. It is not only chemicals that can affect health; environmental radioactivity, pathogenic organisms and our changing climate also have implications for public health, and all contribute to the global burden of disease, leading to both disability and deaths of millions of people annually across the world. An understanding of the pathways of environmental exposure, and its effects upon health is key to developing regulations and behaviours that reduce or prevent exposure, and the consequent impacts upon health. Covering topics from dietary exposure to chemicals through to the health effects of climate change, this book brings together contributors from around the world to highlight the latest science on the impacts of environmental pollutant exposure upon public health.

Book Environmental Consequences and Management of Coastal Industries

Download or read book Environmental Consequences and Management of Coastal Industries written by Michael Elliott and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-11-11 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Consequences and Management of Coastal Industries: Terms and Concepts covers the engineering, natural and social sciences aspects related to coastal power plants and their operation and management. The book gives background to featured problems and solutions, making it relevant to power plants in all global situations and giving practitioners what they need to assess environmental consequences. In addition, the book indicates, defines and illustrates the terms and concepts used worldwide. This is important as engineers and scientists often have an imperfect understanding of the requirements of each other, and similar (in some cases identical) terms may have very different meanings. Users will find this to be a simple and accessible guide to the terminology used and concepts covered. Individual entries are complete in themselves, but still cross referenced to other entries where additional information may be found. This provides quick-and-easy access to the required information. Provides a unique approach that acts as a first-stop-shop for complementary interests with entries presented on separate pages Presents multidisciplinary content, thus ensuring that different functions understand others’ priorities and concerns Includes comprehensive content with wide ranging coverage written by experts with many decades of experience in environmental aspects of coastal power plans and other industries
