Book Guidelines for the Use Design and Construction of Bridge Approach Slabs

Download or read book Guidelines for the Use Design and Construction of Bridge Approach Slabs written by Edward J. Hoppe and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential settlement at the roadway/bridge interface typically results in an abrupt grade change, causing driver discomfort, impairing driver safety, and exerting potentially excessive impact traffic loading on the abutment. Bridge approach slabs are used to keep the effects of this differential settlement within tolerable limits. In many cases, however, the final magnitude of settlement exceeds the working range of an approach slab, necessitating costly roadway and slab repairs. Many state DOTs regard the settlement of bridge approach slabs as a substantial maintenance problem. Guidelines affecting the use, design methodology, material specifications, and construction techniques vary greatly from state to state. The purpose of this study was to provide a literature review on the subject and to conduct a survey on the state of the practice. Thirty-nine state DOTs responded to the survey. Summary findings were compiled, and a comparison with current VDOT practices was made. Recommendations for a new set of guidelines, aimed at mitigating bridge approach settlement, were formulated.

Book Guidance for Good Bridge Design

Download or read book Guidance for Good Bridge Design written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressed to designers and even more so to owners and project managers, this part is meant as a guide to an efficient selection of designers and contractors, and to the preparation of fair contracts providing high quality at reasonable cost. Clearly, a good design must be paid for at its real cost; economising on the design cost can be extremely counterproductive for the owner when considering the final whole-life cost of the project. In addition, it was considered very important to address the designer’s responsibilities and relations with other participants in large projects, and finally design philosophy itself. Part 2 – Design and construction aspects This more technical part is mainly addressed to bridge designers and devoted to a systematic analysis of structural and constructional bridge concepts. Considering the importance of erection techniques in the development of bridge design, this second part of the guide starts by a description of the different construction methods, their advantages and draw-backs, their particularities and, of course, by defining the domain of their most efficient applications. Another main chapter is devoted to the proper design of cross-sections. And finally, a third main chapter deals in detail with the influence of construction techniques on design.

Book Bridge Design

Download or read book Bridge Design written by António J. Reis and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to bridge design Bridge Design - Concepts and Analysis provides a unique approach, combining the fundamentals of concept design and structural analysis of bridges in a single volume. The book discusses design solutions from the authors’ practical experience and provides insights into conceptual design with concrete, steel or composite bridge solutions as alternatives. Key features: Principal design concepts and analysis are dealt with in a unified approach. Execution methods and evolution of the static scheme during construction are dealt with for steel, concrete and composite bridges. Aesthetics and environmental integration of bridges are considered as an issue for concept design. Bridge analysis, including modelling and detail design aspects, is discussed for different bridge typologies and structural materials. Specific design verification aspects are discussed on the basis of present design rules in Eurocodes. The book is an invaluable guide for postgraduate students studying bridge design, bridge designers and structural engineers.

Book An Overview of Mitigation Strategies for Settlements Under Bridge Approach Slabs

Download or read book An Overview of Mitigation Strategies for Settlements Under Bridge Approach Slabs written by Raja Veerendra Yenigalla and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Settlement and heave related movements of bridge approach slabs relative to bridge decks create a bump in the roadway causing inconvenience to the travelling public and at times so large as to make travelling unsafe. Hence, it is important to adopt suitable remedial methods to mitigate the approach settlements so as to ensure safe traveling conditions and also to decrease the repair/maintenance costs. This thesis presents an overview of a few case studies on different mitigation techniques applied on bridge approach settlement problems at various locations in the state of Texas. The methods employed to mitigate the settlement including Polyurethane injection, soil nailing, and potential utilization of Geofoam and flowable fill are discussed. Also, the development of design charts for the construction of light weight fill embankments using Expanded Clay and Shale (ECS) aggregate material is presented. Methods on how to use the design charts for various embankments are also covered.
