Download or read book Treatment of Thyroid Tumor written by Hiroshi Takami and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creating clinical guidelines is a modern trend. Published studies pertaining to a given theme are collected, their credibility evaluated, and then treatment options in the form of evidence-based guidelines are offered. There are a number of guidelines for the treatment of thyroid tumors that have established positions in clinical practice in North America and in Western European countries. In Japan, however, where radioisotope facilities are of limited availability, treatment plans for differentiated thyroid cancer differ considerably from those of America and Europe, and the associated clinical guidelines need modification before they can be adopted. In addition, although thyroid tumor is a common disease in endocrine practice, its management can differ even among specialists. Thus, a Japanese clinical guideline for the treatment of thyroid tumor was desired by many clinicians. As a combination of evidence-based and consensus-based guidelines for the treatment of thyroid tumor, this book offers alternatives to conventional approaches in the West. Ultimately, the authors hope the guideline will lead to the best possible treatment for patients all over the world in the not-distant future.

Download or read book Thyroid Cancer written by Glenn D. Braunstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-09 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Cancer Society recently estimated that about 45,000 new cases of thyroid cancer will be diagnosed in the United States, with three-quarters occurring in women. The overall 5-year survival rate is about 97%, making it one of the least lethal cancers. We are experiencing an epidemic of well-differentiated thyroid cancer, in part due to the widespread use of imaging modalities that detect thyroid nodules and microcarcinomas. Concurrently, there have been a number of recent advances in surgical treatment, as well as diagnostic modalities that allow us to detect small amounts of residual local and metastatic disease. Additionally, a reexamination of past treatment regimens has led to new recommendations regarding the use of radioactive iodine, and to new therapeutic options, such as targeted therapy which have supplanted the use of more toxic chemotherapy for metastatic cancer. Multiple academic organizations have developed consensus guidelines for the management of thyroid cancer, occasionally with conflicting recommendations. In Thyroid Cancer, a renowned group of authors presents a broad overview of the pathology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of thyroid cancer, with an emphasis on recent evidence-based information. State-of-the-art and a significant contribution to the literature, Thyroid Cancer is an invaluable reference for endocrinologists, oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, radiation oncologists, primary care physicians, and surgeons who deal with head and neck cancer.

Book Essentials of Thyroid Cancer Management

Download or read book Essentials of Thyroid Cancer Management written by Ernest L. Mazzaferri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-23 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to provide Endocrinologists, Surgeons, Nuclear Medicine Physicians, and Radiation Oncologists with practical advice about managing patients with thyroid cancer. This book will not replace the excellent publications that focus on a highly speci?c topic or provide an exhaustive review of major s- jects from the perspective of a particular specialty. These kinds of publications will always be an important source of information for both students and expe- enced practitioners. The void that we see is the lack of a single, concise, up-- date reference that is applicable to all of the specialists who make clinical de- sions about thyroid cancer patients. Essentials of Thyroid Cancer Management will ?ll this void in a manner that is both user-friendly and technically compreh- sive. For reading ef?ciency, this book contains the minimum of text required to explain how to make sound clinical decisions in speci?c situations. We rely heavily on tables, diagrams, graphs, photographs, and other ?gures to convey this information. Subjects are addressed in a large number of chapters that each focus on a relatively narrow topic. In some cases, there is overlap between the information in multiple different chapters so the reader does not have to page back and forth between different sections of the book. As occurs in every area of medicine, there is controversy about important issues in the management of thyroid cancer.

Book Management of Differentiated Thyroid Cancer

Areas of controversy, with expert opinions from both outlooks, are also covered. Management of Differentiated Thyroid Cancer serves as a very useful resource for physicians and researchers dealing with, and interested in, this challenging malignancy. It provides a concise yet comprehensive summary of the current status of the field that will help guide patient management and stimulate investigative efforts. All chapters are written by experts in their fields and include the most up-to-date scientific and clinical information.

Book The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology

Download or read book The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology written by Syed Z. Ali and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-20 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas is the offspring of the “The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) State of the Science Conference,” hosted by the NCI and organized by Dr. Andrea Abati. Preparations for the conference began 18 months earlier with the designation of a steering committee and the establishment of a dedicated, p- manent web site. The meeting took place on October 22 and 23, 2007 in Bethesda, Maryland and was co-moderated by Susan J. Mandel and Edmund S. Cibas. The discussions and conclusions regarding terminology and morphologic criteria 1, 2 from the meeting were summarized in publications by Baloch et al. and form the framework for this atlas. The atlas is organized by the general categories of “Nondiagnostic,” “Benign,” “Follicular Neoplasm/Suspicious for a Follicular Neoplasm”, “Suspicious for Malignancy,” and “Malignant,” and it includes the defi- tions and morphologic criteria of these categories as set forth by Baloch et al. The majority of the conference participants also agreed on a category of “undetermined significance,” which is incorporated in this atlas (Chap. 4). It is critical that the cytopathologist communicate thyroid FNA interpretations to the referring physician in terms that are succinct, unambiguous, and helpful clinically. We recognize that the terminology used here is a flexible framework that can be modified by individual laboratories to meet the needs of their providers and the patients they serve.
