Download or read book Acid Rock Drainage Potential in the Northwest Territories written by Canada. Indian and Northern Affairs Canada and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inventory of quantitative information from active and abandoned mines in the Northwest Territories and assessment of the potential for acid rock drainage (ARD) within the mines' waste rock and tailings deposits. Of the 67 mines identified as relevant, only 27 could be evaluated because of lack of information. The mines were assessed for total stored volumes of tailings and waste rock; acid-generating potential of tailings and waste rock as determined by conventional acid base accounting tests; mineralogy of deposits, ore, and gangue; evidence of mineral oxidation in water chemistry data; type and abundance of sulphides in mine waste and tailings; length of time and conditions under which materials were exposed to weathering; and mitigative measures taken to limit or treat ARD arising from tailings and waste rock deposits. A summary of the geology for each individual mine is also included.

Download or read book Spoil to Soil Mine Site Rehabilitation and Revegetation written by N.S. Bolan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-06 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spoil to Soil: Mine Site Rehabilitation and Revegetation presents both fundamental and practical aspects of remediation and revegetation of mine sites. Through three major themes, it examines characterization of mine site spoils; remediation of chemical, physical and biological constraints of mine site spoils, including post mine-site land-use practices; and revegetation of remediated mine site spoils. Each theme includes chapters featuring case studies involving mine sites around the world. The final section focuses specifically on case studies with successful mine site rehabilitation. The book provides a narrative of how inert spoil can be converted to live soil. Instructive illustrations show mine sites before and after rehabilitation. The purpose of this book is to provide students, scientists, and professional personnel in the mining industry sensible, science-based information needed to rehabilitate sustainably areas disturbed by mining activities. This book is suitable for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in environmental, earth, and soil sciences; environmental and soil scientists; and mine site environmental engineers and regulators.

Download or read book Groundwater Geochemistry and Isotopes written by Ian Clark and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2015-04-17 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There remains a lack of understanding of environmental isotopes and their use; students and practitioners typically find the concepts of isotope concentrations and partitioning to be more complicated than for geochemistry. However, this need not be so, if the basics are presented together with geochemistry, using case studies and examples to make the point. This new book presents the basics of environmental isotopes and geochemistry together, with case studies and simple examples that build a real understanding of their use in natural and contaminated groundwater.

Download or read book Mine Wastes written by Bernd Lottermoser and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-09 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not designed to be an exhaustive work on mine wastes. It aims to serve undergraduate students who wish to gain an overview and an understanding of wastes produced in the mineral industry. An introductory textbook addressing the science of such wastes is not available to students despite the importance of the mineral industry as a resource, wealth and job provider. Also, the growing imp- tance of the topics mine wastes, mine site pollution and mine site rehabilitation in universities, research organizations and industry requires a textbook suitable for undergraduate students. Until recently, undergraduate earth science courses tended to follow rather classical lines, focused on the teaching of palaeontology, cryst- lography, mineralogy, petrology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, structural geology, and ore deposit geology. However, today and in the future, earth science teachers and students also need to be familiar with other subject areas. In particular, earth science curriculums need to address land and water degradation as well as rehabili- tion issues. These topics are becoming more important to society, and an increasing number of earth science students are pursuing career paths in this sector. Mine site rehabilitation and mine waste science are examples of newly emerging disciplines. This book has arisen out of teaching mine waste science to undergraduate and graduate science students and the frustration at having no appropriate text which documents the scienti?c fundamentals of such wastes.
