Download or read book Watershed Management for Potable Water Supply written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-02-17 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, New York City adopted a mammoth watershed agreement to protect its drinking water and avoid filtration of its large upstate surface water supply. Shortly thereafter, the NRC began an analysis of the agreement's scientific validity. The resulting book finds New York City's watershed agreement to be a good template for proactive watershed management that, if properly implemented, will maintain high water quality. However, it cautions that the agreement is not a guarantee of permanent filtration avoidance because of changing regulations, uncertainties regarding pollution sources, advances in treatment technologies, and natural variations in watershed conditions. The book recommends that New York City place its highest priority on pathogenic microorganisms in the watershed and direct its resources toward improving methods for detecting pathogens, understanding pathogen transport and fate, and demonstrating that best management practices will remove pathogens. Other recommendations, which are broadly applicable to surface water supplies across the country, target buffer zones, stormwater management, water quality monitoring, and effluent trading.

Download or read book New Strategies for America s Watersheds written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-04-28 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emergence of a toxic organism like pfisteria in tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay has focused public attention on potential hazards in our water. More importantly, it has reminded us of the importance of the entire watershed to the health of any body of water and how political boundaries complicate watershed management. New Strategies for America's Watersheds provides a timely and comprehensive look at the rise of "watershed thinking" among scientists and policymakers and recommends ways to steer the nation toward improved watershed management. The volume defines important terms, identifies fundamental issues, and explores reasons why now is the time to bring watersheds to the forefront of ecosystem management. In a discussion of scale and scope, the committee examines how to expand the watershed from a topographic unit to a framework for integrating natural, social, and economic perspectives as they share the same geographic space. The volume discusses: Regional variations in climate, topography, demographics, institutions, land use, culture, and law. Roles and interaction of federal, state, and local agencies. Availability or lack of pertinent data. Options for financing. The committee identifies critical points in watershed planning to ensure appropriate stakeholder involvement and integration of science, policy, and environmental ethics.

This book was released on 2020-12-04 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York City's municipal water supply system provides about 1 billion gallons of drinking water a day to over 8.5 million people in New York City and about 1 million people living in nearby Westchester, Putnam, Ulster, and Orange counties. The combined water supply system includes 19 reservoirs and three controlled lakes with a total storage capacity of approximately 580 billion gallons. The city's Watershed Protection Program is intended to maintain and enhance the high quality of these surface water sources. Review of the New York City Watershed Protection Program assesses the efficacy and future of New York City's watershed management activities. The report identifies program areas that may require future change or action, including continued efforts to address turbidity and responding to changes in reservoir water quality as a result of climate change.

Download or read book Coastal Watershed Management written by A. Fares and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2008-05-23 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coastal watersheds differ from others by their unique features, including proximity to the ocean, weather and rainfall patterns, subsurface features, and land covers. Land use changes and competing needs for valuable water and land resources are especially more distinctive to such watersheds. This book covers recent research relevant to coastal watersheds. It addresses the impact of a stream’s chemical, biological, and sediment pollutants on the quality of the receiving waters, such as estuaries, bays, and near-shore waters. The contents of the book can be divided into three sections; a) overview of hydrological modelling, b) water quality assessment, and c) watershed management. This book differs from other hydrology books by dealing with coastal watersheds which are characterized by their unique features: including weather and rainfall patterns, subsurface characteristics, and land use and cover. In addition to academia, the book should be of interest to organizations concerned with watershed management, such as local and federal governments and environmental groups. Overall, the book is expected to satisfy a great need toward understanding and managing critical areas in many parts of the world.
Download or read book Lake and Reservoir Restoration written by G. Dennis Cooke and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake and Reservoir Restoration deals with the eutrophication process and the methods to protect, restore, and manage lakes and reservoirs. The most common in-lake techniques or procedures, plus nutrient diversion, are reviewed with regard to their scientific basis, methods of application, known effectiveness, feasibility, drawbacks, and costs. Areas for further research and development are also highlighted. This book is comprised of 16 chapters organized into four sections. After an introduction to the theory of the problem and the restoration technique, the discussion turns to the various restoration methods such as those used for physical and chemical control of nutrients. Diversion and advanced waste treatment, hypolimnetic withdrawal, and dilution and flushing are considered along with phosphorus precipitation and inactivation, sediment oxidation, sediment removal, and hypolimnetic aeration. Case studies and success stories are presented and the costs and potential negative impacts of the methods are examined. The following chapters focus on methods to control plant biomass, including artificial circulation, water-level drawdown, harvesting, biological control, and surface and sediment covers. A chapter on liming acidified lakes concludes this text. This monograph will be useful to professional limnologists and engineers, on-site lake or reservoir managers, and those who are interested in learning about the problems and management of lakes and reservoirs.
Download or read book Lakes and Water Management written by V. Ilmavirta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple use of natural waters and watersheds poses many practical problems, some of which are clearly limnological, relating for example to carrying capacities oflakes, deterioration of water quality and fisheries management. It is thus important to consider limnological aspects when making decisions in the field of water management. To further this attitude the Finnish Limnological Society considered 'Lakes and Water Management' to be a suitable theme for the Society's Jubilee Symposium, held in Helsinki on 22-23 September, 1980 at the Viikki Campus of the University of Helsinki, to mark the Society's 30th Anniversary. The Finnish Limnological Society has arranged nationallimnological symposia everyone or two years. The papers presented at these symposia have been published in the series 'Limnologisymposion' (in Finnish or Swedish, with short summaries in an internationally spoken language). Due to financial difficulties, the series was terminated as of the symposium in 1979. When preparing the 30th Anniversary of the Finnish Limnological Society, the Governing Board of the Society decided to arrange an international symposium on a theme relevant to modern limnology both in Finland and elsewhere. The selected results of the successful meeting on lakes and water management, which was attended by 220 people from 7 countries, are presented in this volume.

Book excerpt: The Water for Life strategy outlines the Government of Alberta's commitments to manage and safeguard Alberta's water resources, now and in the future. The strategy has been the vehicle for managing Alberta's precious water resources since its release in 2003. Because it has been such an effective tool for managing Alberta's water resources, the Government of Alberta renewed the strategy and will implement a renewed action plan. The Water for Life renewal builds upon the good work already undertaken and reaffirms the Government of Alberta's commitment to the Water for Life approach for the wise management of Alberta's water quantity and quality for the benefit of all Albertans. Five years later, Albertans continue to care about the health of the aquatic environment, as well as issues concerning water quality and quantity. They are also aware of the impacts of climate change, unprecedented economic growth and development, and population demands on Alberta's water resources. The renewed Water for Life strategy and action plan reflect current issues in our province and the recommendations made by the Alberta Water Council. It is a renewal that builds on an already strong foundation to ensure continued sustainable water quality and quantity in Alberta. In most cases, significant foundational work has begun or will be initiated in the short-term.
