Book Handbook of Flood Risk Management in Developing Countries

Download or read book Handbook of Flood Risk Management in Developing Countries written by Victor Oladokun and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new handbook brings together various views and experiences of the impacts of flooding and its management in Africa, Asia and Latin America by drawing from traditional and modern approaches adopted by communities, homeowners, academics, project managers, institutions and policy makers. Key stakeholders provide insights and perspectives on flood hazards, flood impacts, flood control and adaptation strategies across these regions. The inclusion of policy makers, emergency responders, leaders of key organizations and managers of flood defence projects makes this volume a unique addition to the flood management literature. The chapters are organized to reveal various impacts and challenges associated with the management of flooding, including response and recovery. The chapter contributions bring together the different impacts of flooding and propose various mitigation approaches. They describe procedures for managing flooding and reducing the impacts from the perspectives of policy makers, environmental planners and restorers of flood-affected communities. Also, the book considers some of the related aspects including land use, waste management, drainage systems, security challenges, urban planning and development and their contributions to flooding. The book's primary target is experienced researchers and practitioners in flood risk management. It would also serve as a key text for postgraduate students studying related programmes. Inhabitants of flood prone communities in such developing countries will also find the text an important resource for guidance and understanding. This multi-disciplinary book represents a valuable contribution for a wide range of professionals (e.g. in engineering, built environment, health, retail, etc) who are interested in flood control and management and/or faced with flood-related challenges in the course of their work.

Book Flood Prevention and Remediation

Download or read book Flood Prevention and Remediation written by Flávio César Borba Mascarenhas and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human settlements have grown near watercourses since ancient times. Water supply, irrigation, navigation, wastewater conveyance and city defense are some of the uses that were responsible for this choice. Even floods played an important role, favoring the soil fertilization. Man-made actions, however, especially in urban watersheds, significantly modify the natural water cycle, increasing the magnitude of floods and their potential damages. Consequently, flood damages are one of the most important issues to be dealt with in the present days. Several different studies show that floods are one of the most important natural hazards, with several losses, both in terms of lives and money. Particularly in urban areas, the amplification of floods may cause important economic losses and lead to critical social risks to the cities and their population, when inundation reaches the built environment. This situation is becoming more frequent each day. Recent history shows that urbanization is an inevitable trend and, today, the most part of the world population lives in cities. It is difficult, however, to adequately manage urban flood problems, because flood risk and flood costs are not easy to quantify. Traditionally, flood risk and flood cost assessments face difficulties due to the subjective nature of these evaluations and to the inexistence of standardized methodologies. This book tries to show different techniques and approaches to help in treating flood problems. Chapters 1 and 2 show simplified mathematical modeling of floods and results of multifunctional landscape flood control measures in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The remaining book chapters present remedial works against debris after floods in Venezuela and Measures for Mitigation of Flood areas in Japan. There are also presented studies related with Flood Risk Assessment and Management in Mediterranean Basins. The final chapter shows an interesting study related to the attitudes of residents in the Tokyo Bay area toward flood hazards.

Book Management of Natural Disasters in Developing Countries

Download or read book Management of Natural Disasters in Developing Countries written by H. N. Srivastava and published by Daya Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Centre for Science and Technology of the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries (NAMS&T Centre) has brought out a publication entitled Management of Natural Disaster in Developing Countries based on the proceedings of the International Workshop on the above subject held in Asian institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok, Thailand, 24-27 January, 2000. Natural hazards are naturally occurring processes forming an experience to human being, depending on where one lives. Floods, volcanoes, tornadoes, bushfires and hurricanes are the possible threats, which affect the environment and thus our lives. To find out the outcome of the problem, it requires exploring the reason of its origin and the possible antidotes so that it can dwindle to some extent. Planning, managing and implementing environmentally sound strategies are the supreme measures in this concern. Also, organizing a series of workshops/trainings on Management of Natural Disaster could be an aid in consecutive steps. Hence, the above workshop was organised and the proceedings of the workshop have been arranged in a sequential manner. The volume contents mainly aim at identifying areas of mitigating flood, cyclone and storm surge disaster. The Status Reports from well know experts from different countries namely, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, Pakistan, Syria, Thailand and Viethnam are also included in this Volume. Contents Chapter 1: Mitigating Cyclone and Storm Surge Disasters by Jamilur R Choudhury; Chapter 2: Management of Natural Disasters by Aminul Kawser Khan; Chapter 3: S&T Initiatives for Natural Hazard Mitigation by K R Gupta and R K Midha; Chapter 4: Improved Understanding About Indian Earthquake Hazard by G D Gupta & H N Srivastava; Chapter 5: R&D for Cyclone Disaster Mitigation by T V S R Appa Rao; Chapter 6: Natural Disaster and its Mitigation by Wisyanto; Chapter 7: The ESCAP-IDNDR Regional Survey on Assessment of Achievements during the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (DNDR) by Le Huu Ti; Chapter 8: Overview of Experiences and Responses to Recent Disasters by Cengiz Ertuna; Chapter 9: Accomplishments, Current Activities and Future Requirements for Disaster Reduction by Kamal Bin Hussain; Chapter 10: Management of Natural Disasters by Veersing Boodhna; Chapter 11: Management of Natural Disasters by Krishna Prasad Paraujuli; Chapter 12: Forecasting, Early Warning and Reporting Procedure in Case of Disasters by Muhammad Munir Sheikh; Chapter 13: Manageable Procedures to Encounter the Natural Disasters by Abdul Qader Melhem; Chapter 14: Channel Changes Using Satellite Data for Flood Mitigation, Watershed Degradation the Flood Plain Monitoring by Lal Samnarakoon, Kiyoshi Honda and Akichika Ishibashi; Chapter 15: Cyclone Disasters due to Heavy Rainfall by Suphat Vongvisessomjai; Chapter 16: Cyclone Disasters due to Strong Wind and Surge by Suphat Vongvisessomjai; Chapter 17: Mitigation of Typhoons and Flood by Daong Quang San.

Climate change and rapid urbanization will exacerbate this trend. Flooding incidents in urbanized catchments and low-lying areas, such as polders, can lead to great public concern and anxiety, and their economical impact is severe. Apart from well-known flood prevention strategies, new approaches to the accommodation of floods are needed to create robust and sustainable solutions that enable us to cope with the ever-increasing urban pressure on flood-prone areas and the uncertainties created by climate change. Urban Flood Management comprises a multidisciplinary survey of recent developments in this field. Subjects like spatial and urban planning, flood insurance, flood resilience, flood proofing techniques, risk perception and preparedness and flood forecasting are treated by authorities from Brazil, India, the USA and Europe. Urban Flood Management will provide anyone active in the fields of water, risk and urban management with the latest information and insights that were obtained with a global and multidisciplinary approach.
