Download or read book Implications of the EU Banana Trade Regime for Selected Import Markets written by Patrick Verissimo and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 1st 1993, the EU implemented the Common Organization for the Market of Bananas (COMB) to replace the different national banana policies that previously existed in its member countries. As it turned out, the adopted regime became one of the most bitterly internally disputed outcomes of the completion of the EU single common market, and is an on-going source of dispute at the WTO level between the EU on the one side, and the US and Latin American countries on the other side. The most controversial aspects of the COMB relate to the management of banana trade with non-EU countries, and in particular, to the tariff-rate quota (TRQ) imposed on non-traditional ACP and dollar bananas. These issues are at the center of this work which focuses on the German and French banana markets, the two largest single importers of bananas in the EU, characterized by opposed pre-COMB banana regimes. In addition, the US banana market, the single largest banana importer worldwide, characterized by a free trade policy, is also analyzed. The analysis of market performance revolves around pricing efficiency and market integration, as measured by the extent and speed of horizontal and vertical price transmission. A quantitative assessment of the distribution of quota rents among operators on the one hand, and between Germany and France on the other hand, is carried out. A brief analysis of the economic impact on dollar banana operators of a COMB reform towards a tariff-only system, concludes the empirical work.

Download or read book The Reform of International Economic Governance written by Antonio Segura Serrano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-05 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second half of the twentieth century saw the emergence of international economic law as a major force in the international legal system. This force has been severely tested by the economic crisis of 2008. Unable to prevent the crisis, the existing legal mechanisms have struggled to react against its direst consequences. This book brings together leading experts to analyse the main causes of the crisis and the role that international economic law has played in trying to prevent it, on the one hand, and worsening it, on the other. The work highlights the reaction and examines the tools that have been created by the international legal field to implement international cooperation in an effort to help put an end to the crisis and avoid similar events in the future. The volume brings together eminent legal academics and economists to examine key issues from the perspectives of trade law, financial law, and investment law with the collective aim of reform of international economic governance.

This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CARIFORUM-EU Economic Partnership Agreement is a sui generis North-South trade and development agreement. The C-EPA is a bi-regional agreement, signed in Bridgetown, Barbados in October 2008, with the specific aim of supporting the sustainable development of the Caribbean. As a paradigm changer in the ACP-EU trade relationship, the C-EPA has unsurprisingly attracted considerable attention. The long process of ratification by twenty-seven EU Member States and fifteen Caribbean countries has begun, and implementation is advancing after an initial delay. This book is the first detailed analysis of the Agreement's provisions, including its negotiating history and prognosis of its future potential. It is written by fifteen Caribbean and European practitioners, most of whom actively contributed to the crafting of the Agreement as CARIFORUM or EU negotiators. The contributions cover the following: ; charting a dual approach to CARIFORUM commitments at both regional and national levels; establishing an architecture of commitments that seeks to support CARIFORUM regional integration; safeguarding Caribbean preferential access to the EU market; broadening the ambit of the Caribbean-EU relationship, as reflected in the Cotonou Agreement, into new trade disciplines; highlighting key drivers in the negotiations; addressing the CARICOM-Dominican Republic economic relationship; examining the special treatment of Haiti; and reviewing the C-EPA's compatibility with WTO rules.

Download or read book Financial Market Infrastructure and Economic Integration written by George A Papaconstantinou and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-25 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comprehensive study of the interplay between the cutting-edge regulation of financial infrastructure and international economic integration. It tackles a series of important questions: How does the regulation of central counterparties interact with international economic law? Is the WTO able to deal with the regulatory diversity of each country's financial rulebook? Do FTAs foster deeper integration of financial infrastructure services? Can competition law effectively tackle monopolisation and anti-competitive conduct in financial infrastructure? The book discusses how the liberalisation of financial market infrastructure is achieved within the most prominent international economic integration settings: the WTO, Economic Integration Agreements, and EU competition law. It explores whether a more harmonious relationship between financial regulation and economic integration is feasible, and how it can be achieved. The book demonstrates the existence of both structural barriers to trade and trade-facilitating tools that can impede and foster the further integration of financial market infrastructure. Measuring the depth of liberalisation of financial market infrastructure services in more than 120 FTAs, as well as surveying recent case law of the WTO, the Court of Justice of the European Union, and the practice of the European Commission, the book shows how the economic integration of financial market infrastructure occurs. An essential read for those seeking to understand how the cutting-edge regulation of financial market infrastructure and transnational systems of economic integration interact with one another.
