Book The Cytoskeletal and Motor Proteins and Guidebook to the Extracellular Matrix and Adhesion Proteins

Download or read book The Cytoskeletal and Motor Proteins and Guidebook to the Extracellular Matrix and Adhesion Proteins written by Professor Departement de Biologie Cellulaire Thomas E Kreis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-06 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biology of the 1980s and 1990s may well come to be remembered as the era of discovery of new proteins. Recent advances in molecular biology, genetics, and protein purification have conspired to accelerate the rate at which cellular proteins and their amino acid sequences are being identified. Now that the floodgate of discovery has been opened wide, the amount of new information on cellular proteins is exceeding most scientists' capacity for assimilation. At the same time, however, it has become imperative for research workers to expand their knowledge base because interactions between previously unconnected sets of proteins are being uncovered at such a rapid pace. These considerations have led Thomas E. Kreis and Ronald D. Vale to compile both the Guidebook to Cytoskeletal and Motor Proteins and the Guidebook to the Extracellular Matrix and Adhesion Proteins. Both books are distinguished by numerous outstanding features, including: concise compendiums of molecular information, consolidation of information from widely scattered sources, key references, clearly designed pages with many high-quality illustrations, and the first compilations of concise descriptions of the structure, function, and distribution of the proteins covered. Guidebook to Cytoskeletal and Motor Proteins covers actin and actin binding proteins, tubulin and associated proteins, the intermediate filaments, motor proteins, cytoskeletal anchor proteins, organelle membrane associated structural proteins, and other proteins. Introductory chapters provide overviews for each class of protein. Biological and structural attributes of about 200 individual proteins, or groups of closely related proteins, are concisely described by investigators who participated in their discovery or characterization. In addition, information regarding purification methods, assays of activity, and available reagents, together with a list key review and research articles, are included. Over 240 authors contributed to the entries. Guidebook to the Extracellular Matrix and Adhesion Proteins provides a concise compendium of the proteins found in the extracellular matrix and those known to be involved in cell-cell contact and adhesion. Organized alphabetically, it summarizes the key characteristics of these proteins and includes the same features--such as introductory chapters and contributions from the field's leading experts--that make its companion volume so essential. Designed to explain the each protein in an accessible manner, the book is also referenced for in-depth reading and provides excellent overviews.

Book Mechanics of Motor Proteins and the Cytoskeleton

Download or read book Mechanics of Motor Proteins and the Cytoskeleton written by Jonathon Howard and published by Sinauer. This book was released on 2005-12-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics of Motor Proteins and the Cytoskeleton provides a physical foundation for molecular mechanics. Part I explains how small particles like proteins respond to mechanical, thermal, and chemical forces, Part II focuses on cytoskeletal filaments, and Part III focuses on motor proteins. The treatments are unified in the respect that they are organized around principles rather than proteins: chapters are centred on topics such as structure, chemistry, and mechanics, and different filaments or motors are discussed together.

Book Cytoskeleton Methods and Protocols

Download or read book Cytoskeleton Methods and Protocols written by Ray H. Gavin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-03 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades experimental studies have solidified the int- pretation of the cytoskeleton as a highly dynamic network of microtubules, actin microfilaments, intermediate filaments, and myosin filaments. Rather than a network of disparate fibers, these polymers are often interconnected and display synergy, which is the combined action of two or more cytoskeletal polymers to achieve a specific cellular structure or function. Cross-commu- cation among cytoskeletal polymers is thought to be achieved through cytoskeletal polymer accessory proteins and molecular motors that bind two or more cytoskeletal polymers. Development of the modern concept of the cytoskeleton is a direct o- growth of advances in experimental tools and reagents that are available to cell and molecular biologists. Technological advances and refinements in cell imaging have made it possible to selectively image a single cytoskeletal po- mer and monitor its dynamics through the use of fluorescence probes in vitro and in vivo. Two decades ago, cytoskeletal research was limited to a few perturbation reagents that included colchicine and cytochalasin. Today, the perturbation arsenal has expanded to a highly selective group of reagents that includes Taxol, nocodazole, benomyl, latrunculin, jasplakinolide, and such endogenous proteins as gelsolin. These reagents enable the investigator to selectively perturb or destroy a cytoskeletal polymer while leaving other cytoskeletal polymers intact. Site-specific monoclonal antibodies that target a specific cytoskeletal polymer have proven to be highly selective affinity tools for cytoskeletal research.

Book The Cytoskeleton

Download or read book The Cytoskeleton written by Thomas Dean Pollard and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cytoskeleton is the intracellular filament system that controls the morphology of a cell, allows it to move, and provides trafficking routes for intracellular transport. It comprises three major filament systems-actin, microtubules, and intermediate filaments-along with a host of adaptors, regulators, molecular motors, and additional structural proteins. This textbook presents a comprehensive and up-to-date view of the cytoskeleton, cataloguing its many different components and explaining how they are functionally integrated in different cellular processes. It starts by laying out the basic molecular hardware, before describing in detail how these components are assembled in cells and linked to neighboring cells and the extracellular matrix to maintain tissue architecture. It then surveys the roles of the cytoskeleton in processes such as intracellular transport, cell motility, signal transduction, and cell division. The book is thus essential reading for students learning about intracellular structure. It also represents a vital reference for all cell and developmental biologists working in this field.
