Book excerpt: Westminster Abbey is the most complex church in the world in terms of its history, functions and memories - perhaps the most complex building of any kind. It has been an abbey and a cathedral and is now a collegiate church and a royal peculiar. It is the coronation church, a royal mausoleum, a Valhalla for the tombs of the great, a 'national cathedral' and the 'Tomb of the Unknown Warrior'. This new edition recounts the story of this iconic building and the role it plays in our national psyche.

Download or read book It s EZE London written by Tony Gibson and published by Modus Associates Limited. This book was released on 2009-11-07 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unusually comprehensive city travel guide, It’s EZE London! provides the reader with up to date information on London’s attractions, written in a light and pleasing style with contents grouped into logical chapters which make the reader’s research fun and simple to achieve. Filled with useful details, essential background and historic information, it provides a well balanced view of each place described, allowing the reader to make informed decisions on what, when and how to visit their selected destinations in London. It’s EZE London! does not feature hotels or other accommodation, nor does it list places to eat and drink. We believe that accommodation research is far better served by availability searches on the Internet and, with some 43,000 pubs and restaurants in London, just where do you start! Instead, we focus on providing useful information on London’s many sights and attractions - as well as how to get there. Each attraction listed includes images and location maps which show clearly which other sights or places are located in the immediate vicinity - together with details on nearest Tube stations and, where appropriate, attraction opening times and dates. All in all, a very worthwhile publication.

Book Feeling Things

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephanie Downes
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018
  • ISBN : 0198802641
  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book Feeling Things written by Stephanie Downes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary essay collection investigates the various interactions of people, feelings, and things throughout premodern Europe. It focuses on the period before mass production, when limited literacy often prioritised material methods of communication. The subject of materiality has been of increasing significance in recent historical inquiry, alongside growing emphasis on the relationships between objects, emotions, and affect in archaeological and sociological research. The historical intersections between materiality and emotions, however, have remained under-theorised, particularly with respect to artefacts that have continuing resonance over extended periods of time or across cultural and geographical space. Feeling Things addresses the need to develop an appropriate cross-disciplinary theoretical framework for the analysis of objects and emotions in European history, with special attention to the need to track the shifting emotional valencies of objects from the past to the present, and from one place and cultural context to another. The collection draws together an international group of historians, art historians, curators, and literary scholars working on a variety of cultural, literary, visual, and material sources. Objects considered include books, letters, prosthetics, religious relics, shoes, stone, and textiles. Many of these have been preserved in international galleries, museums, and archives, while others have remained in their original locations, even as their contexts have changed over time. The chapters consider the ways in which emotions such as despair, fear, grief, hope, love, and wonder become inscribed in and ascribed to these items, producing 'emotional objects' of significance and agency. Such objects can be harnessed to create, affirm, or express individual relationships, as, for example, in religious devotion and practice, or in the construction of cultural, communal, and national identities.
