This book was released on 1997 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part one of a two-part guide to the vascular plants of central French Guiana. In this installment, 12 species of lycopods (Lycophyta), 182 species of ferns (Pterophyta), the one gymnosperm (Gnetophyta), & the 426 species in 27 families of monocotyledons (Magnoliophyta class Lililopsida) native or naturalized to central French Guiana are keyed & described. An annotated & well-illustrated list of species with outstanding ecological or morphological features of use in plant identification is included. Three maps, 165 line illustrations, 240 color photographs, & a glossary providing definitions of technical terms used to describe plants in northeastern South America facilitate the use of this guide. The specimen database of seed plants of central French Guianais now available for access over the internet.
Download or read book Guide to Standard Floras of the World written by David G. Frodin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-06-14 with total page 1136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2001 book provides a selective annotated bibliography of the principal floras and related works of inventory for vascular plants. The second edition was completely updated and expanded to take into account the substantial literature of the late twentieth century, and features a more fully developed review of the history of floristic documentation. The works covered are principally specialist publications such as floras, checklists, distribution atlases, systematic iconographies and enumerations or catalogues, although a relatively few more popularly oriented books are also included. The Guide is organised in ten geographical divisions, with these successively divided into regions and units, each of which is prefaced with a historical review of floristic studies. In addition to the bibliography, the book includes general chapters on botanical bibliography, the history of floras, and general principles and current trends, plus an appendix on bibliographic searching, a lexicon of serial abbreviations, and author and geographical indexes.

Download or read book French Guiana written by Janet Crane and published by Oxford, England : Clio Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French Guiana lies on the north coast of South America, with Suriname to the west and Brazil to the south and east. French occupation began in the early seventeenth century. After brief periods of Dutch, English and Portuguese rule, the territory was confirmed as French in 1817. The colony steadily declined, after a short period of prosperity in the 1850s as a result of the discovery of gold. French Guiana, including the notorious Devil's Island, was used as a penal colony until 1937, and the territory became an Overseas Department of France in 1946. This bibliography, containing some 500 entries, brings together, for the first time, the most important French and English publications concerning French Guiana.

Download or read book Memoirs of the New York Botanical Garden written by New York Botanical Garden and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive treatment of all known bat-dispersed plants in the New World tropics and covers a total of 549 species in 191 genera from 62 plant families. It places a special emphasis on the flowering plants and bat fauna of the relatively undisturbed forests of central French Guiana. In particular, detailed descriptions of 112 bat-dispersed species from that area are complemented by color photographs that will help other researchers identify fruits and seeds throughout the Neotropics. Going beyond merely describing these species, the authors compare and analyze the diverse traits of plants dispersed by bats to reexamine bat preferences of some fruiting plants over the others, a phenomenon known as the "bat-fruit syndrome." The seed dispersers too are given ample treatment, with descriptions of the foraging ecology and feeding behaviors of the 37 fruit-eating bats found in central French Guiana. The monograph includes complementing appendices that allow the reader to determine all bat species reported to feed on the fruits of a particular plant and all fruiting plants in the diet of a particular bat species. It summarizes decades of research on bat-plant interactions from many parts of the Neotropics, providing a stimulus for further ecological and evolutionary studies.
