Download or read book The Morris Canal written by Robert R. Goller and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Morris Canal was not the longest canal in the world, but it did have one superlative to its credit--it climbed higher than any other canal ever built. In its time it was world famous, visited by tourists and technical people from as far away as Europe and Asia. For nearly 100 years it crossed the hills of northern New Jersey, accomplishing that feat with 23 lift locks and 23 inclined planes. From Lake Hopatcong, the canal ran westward through the Musconetcong valley to Phillipsburg, on the Delaware River, and eastward through the valleys of the Rockaway and Passaic rivers to tidewater at Newark and Jersey City--a little over 100 miles horizontally and a total rise and fall of nearly 1,700 feet vertically. The Morris Canal, once an important soldier in the American Industrial Revolution, has been gone for most of the twentieth century, but its memory lives on in the many photographs, postcards, and other memorabilia that its unique presence inspired.

  • Pages : 96 pages

Download or read book Along the Morris Canal written by Amy Stewart- Wilmarth and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dug by hardworking men in the late 1820s, the Morris Canal is considered to be an engineering marvel. Comprised of 34 locks and 23 inclined planes, it created a waterway from the Delaware River in Phillipsburg, across northern New Jersey, and down into the Hudson River in Jersey City. It was drained in 1924, with its prisms mostly filled in. The 1960s brought a steadfast movement for the preservation of the largely buried Morris Canal, including the historic Silas Riggs Saltbox House being rescued from demolition and later the opening of the restored Waterloo Village. These challenging years set in motion the formation of organizations and societies dedicated to protecting, restoring, and preserving the Morris Canal. Through the persistent efforts and dedication of historians, canal enthusiasts, and neighboring communities, the Morris Canal and its buried history are gradually being unearthed. This book captures the Morris Canal's original pathway and its restoration and preservation accomplishments.

Book Mansions of Morris County

Download or read book Mansions of Morris County written by John W. Rae and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pictorial record of Morris County, New Jersey, traces the dramatic rise of America's least-known colony of millionaires during the Gilded Age. The area became a country retreat for the upper class. Families such as the Vanderbilts, Rockefellers, Kountzes, Wolffs, Dodges, and Claflins built impressive estates in the area referred to as the "inland Newport." By the 1920s, the prominence of Morris County was eclipsed by the lure of Long Island, and its economy was being threatened by the Depression. Faced with high taxes from the newly established income tax, skyrocketing maintenance costs, and a dwindling reservoir of help, the wealthy residents began razing their mansions. Although many of these vast estates have been long gone and forgotten, author John W. Rae's collection of early Morris County photographs recaptures the area's palatial homes in their full grandeur. Within the pages of Morris County Mansions, Rae invites you to join him on a visual tour of the magnificent architecture of the Gilded Age. Meet the area's prominent families and discover little-known facts about the homes in which they resided.

Book The Delaware and Raritan Canal

Download or read book The Delaware and Raritan Canal written by Linda J. Barth and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly one hundred seventy years, the Delaware and Raritan Canal has meandered across the narrow waist of New Jersey through bustling cities, suburban towns, and rural landscapes. One of the most successful towpath canals in the United States, the Delaware and Raritan carried more tonnage in 1866 than the famous Erie Canal. Transporting mainly anthracite coal, the Delaware and Raritan also stimulated industries as diverse as Roebling's wire-rope factory in Trenton, Johnson & Johnson pharmaceuticals in New Brunswick, and Fleischmann's Distillery in East Millstone. Today, as the centerpiece of the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park, the canal provides the people of central New Jersey with both a water supply and a premier recreational facility. The Delaware and Raritan Canal introduces you to this manmade waterway through some two hundred historical photographs and postcards. In these pages, discover the locks, aqueducts, and machinery that enabled the waterway to transport military men and supplies between New York and Philadelphia during three wars. See how inventor John Holland used the canal to deliver his Holland VI submarine to Washington for its naval trials and how luxury yachts, including J.P. Morgan's Tarantula, cruised the waterway. The Delaware and Raritan Canal documents a historical and recreational gem in the heart of New Jersey.

Book Denville 13 The Murder Redemption and Forgiveness in Small Town New Jersey

Download or read book Denville 13 The Murder Redemption and Forgiveness in Small Town New Jersey written by Peter Zablocki and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denville in the 1950s was an idyllic place to live, yet a dark chapter in the era's history has remained uncovered. During the summer of 1953, a wealthy traveler with a secret rap sheet as a convicted sex offender arrived in town to continue his misdeeds. A group of thirteen local boys ranging in age from fourteen to twenty-two took it upon themselves to teach the man a lesson and drive him out of town. What resulted was his brutal death and the largest number of people ever indicted for murder in the nation at the time. The harrowing trial and its aftermath revealed a town forced to grapple with how to protect its youth and come to terms with the gruesome incident. Local historian Peter Zablocki covers the crime and a small town's path to redemption.
