Book Guide to the Materials for United States History in Canadian Archives Classic Reprint

Download or read book Guide to the Materials for United States History in Canadian Archives Classic Reprint written by David W. Parker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to the Materials for United States, History in Canadian Archives This volume is part of a series by means of which the Department of Historical Research in the Carnegie Institution of Washington is endeavoring to make better known to those who work in American history the materials for that history which are preserved in foreign archives. Guides to the materials in the archives of England, Spain, Italy, and Germany have already been published, a volume for Mexican archives is about to appear, and volumes for France and other countries will follow. The constant relations between Canada and the English colonies, or the United States, during two centuries of conflict and a hundred years of peace, across the longest international line, save one, that the world has ever known, have made it inevitable that the archives of Canada should abound in documents useful, and sometimes highly important, to the history of the United States. Probably few American students suspect the extent of that abundance. It is especially difficult to appreciate in the case of the Public Archives of Canada at Ottawa. That wonderful collection has increased by leaps and bounds, and few persons, even in Canada, are fully aware of the rich claims it has to their pride and admiration. In the effort to make its treasures better known to students one is inevitably hampered by this very rapidity of growth. Fresh accessions will quickly make one's manual out-of-date; but the present need must nevertheless be met. A large part of the Archives of the Dominion consists of transcripts from London and Paris. The originals of these transcripts are, it is true, dealt with in the books on London and Paris archives which Professor Andrews and Mr. Leland have been preparing for the Carnegie Institution of Washington. But Ottawa is nearer than London, and many an American student will find it most practicable to pursue his researches in Ottawa, aided by the calendars published by the Dominion Archives and by the present work, which in respect to the series of transcripts is framed to be the complement of the official calendars. The student finds excellent facilities given him at Ottawa, with the most appreciative liberality. It is also well worthy of note that the Archive establishment possesses a photostat, by means of which copies of its documents, which are mostly in modern and legible handwriting, can be readily and cheaply obtained. The chief author of this book, Mr. David W. Parker, now on the staff of the Dominion Archives, spent eight months, in 1910 and 1911, at Ottawa in the service of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, preparing the sections, on the Ottawa collections, which fill the major portion of the book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Documents in the Manuscript Room, Vol. 1: At the Public Archives of Canada The Public Archives of Canada, though primarily intended for the preservation of official records, serves the secondary, but not unimportant purpose of furnishing materials for historical study. History, it need hardly be said, is no longer regarded merely as a field for the exercise of literary skill; it has to a large extent lost its epic character and assumed the severe guise of science. Original documents or faithful transcripts of them mutt be consulted, and it is manifestly important that these should be made accessible, under as favourable conditions as possible to all serious students. There is in Canada to-day a growing historical school; and it is a satisfaction to know that much benefit has already been derived, by our younger writers particularly, from the resources which the Public Archives have placed at their disposal. The work, of which the first volume is now published, is intended to promote a wider and fuller knowledge of the range and variety of the papers which the Archives contain, and of the manner of their classification and arrangement. The task of preparing A Guide to the Documents in the Manuscript Room at the Public Archives of Canada has been entrusted to Mr. David Parker, M. A., who was first brought into touch with our collections through compiling for the Carnegie Institute of Washington a volume entitled a Guide to the Materials for United States History in Canadian Archives. Mr. Parker has since been placed in charge of the Manuscript Division of this Department. Andrews and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to the Manuscript Materials for the History of the United States to 1783, in the British Museum, in Minor London Archives, and in the Libraries of Oxford and Cambridge The present volume is part of a series, in which the Carnegie Institution of Washington proposes to present inventories guiding the student of American history to such manuscript materials as are to be found in the archives and libraries of foreign countries. The previous issues in the same series have been Mr. L.M. Perezs Guide to the Materials for American History in Cuban Archives, and Professor W.R. Shepherds Guide to the Materials for the History of the United States in Spanish Archives (Simancas, the Archivo Historico Nacional, and Seville), The next archives to be dealt with in similar volumes are those of Paris, Mexico and Rome. The project of a comprehensive and detailed Guide to the Manuscript Materials for American History in London Repositories antedates the Carnegie Institution of Washington. In the belief that such a manual would be a boon to many workers in the history of the United States the writer of these lines began in 1899 to plan for it and to attempt to bring it into existence. The American Antiquarian Society was approached, with a view to persuade it to use for the preparation of such a book the income of one of its funds. At a meeting of the council of that society in October, 1900, an appropriation was made, and the societys committee of publication was authorized to proceed. The plan then in mind contemplated three forms of entry under each subdivision of each archive e.g., of the Public Record Office. First, the body of original papers composing that section should be described, with special reference to the question, what it contained for American history. Secondly, there should be a list of transcripts, made from documents in that section, which were to be found in American archives and libraries. Thirdly, there should be a list of references to documents from that section which had anywhere been put into print. This last portion was first provided for by the society, and the data for the desired list were searched for and noted by Miss Gertrude S. Kimball of Providence. It had at first been planned that the portion of the volume which would have to be made in London, corresponding to the first of the three sorts of material noted above, might be prepared by a competent official of the Public Record Office. This proving impracticable, endeavors were made, and successfully, to enlist for the project the services of Professor Charles M.Andrews, then of Bryn Mawr College, who had already spent much time in London archives, and was preparing to spend the ensuing year in further investigations in England on his own behalf.
