Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Taxidermy: A Complete Guide in Collecting and Preserving Birds and Mammals Possibly the political troubles in which our country was involved had something to do with the great ornithological depression which fell upon the pop ular mind. Strange as it may appear, however, for a period of thirty years after the completion of Audubon's great work, not a general popular work of any kind was written on birds in America. Then appeared Samuels' Birds of New England, pub lished in 1867, a work which apparently did much toward turning the popular tide in favor of orni thological study, for from that time we can perceive a general awakening. Not only did the newspa pers and magazines teem with articles on birds, but in the five succeeding years we find three impor tant works on American ornithology announced as about to appear: Baird, Brewer, and Ridgeway's History of American Birds, of which three vol umes have appeared, published in 1874; May nard's Birds of Florida, issued in parts, but af terwards merged into the Birds of Eastern North America, completed in 1882, and Goues' Key. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods in the Art of Taxidermy From this, however, we cannot infer that these specimens were mounted or arranged to represent life-like attitudes, but simply that the skins were preserved. If our art is of ancient date, we have no relics of it, as we find in the other arts, as lasting as those of Grecian sculpture, which date back as far as the eighth century B. C. The famous Lion Gate at Mycenae is supposed to be even older. We have no monuments in our art that defy the march of time like the bronze Discobolus of Myron, yet to be seen in the Vatican at Rome. Author Robert Marbury makes for a friendly (and often funny) guide, addressing the three big questions people have about taxidermy art: What is it all about? Can I see some examples? and How can I make my own? He takes readers through a brief history of taxidermy (and what sets artistic taxidermy apart) and presents stunning pieces from the most influential artists in the field. Rounding out the book are illustrated how-to lessons to get readers started on their own work, with sources for taxidermy materials and resources for the budding taxidermist.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Taxidermy: A Complete Guide in Collecting and Preserving Birds and Mammals Twenty-five or thirty years ago amateur collectors of birds were rare; in fact, excepting in the immediate vicinity of large cities, individuals who spent their leisure time in gathering birds for the sole purpose of study, were so seldom met with that, when one did occur, his occupation was so unusual as to excite the comments of his neighbors, and he became famous for miles around as highly eccentric. Such a man was regarded as harmless, but as just a little "cracked," and the lower classes gazed at him with open-mouthed wonder as he pursued his avocations; while the more educated of his fellows regarded him with a kind of placid contempt. Download or read book Taxidermy and Zoological Collecting written by William Temple Hornaday and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Taxidermy and Zoological Collecting: A Complete Handbook for the Amateur Taxidermist, Collector, Osteologist, Museum-Builder, Sportsman, and Traveller The rapid and alarming destruction of all forms of wild ani mal life which is now going on furiously throughout the entire world, renders it imperatively necessary for those who would build up great zoological collections to be up and doing before any more of the leading species are exterminated. It is already too late to collect wild specimens of the American bison, Californian elephant seal, West Indian seal, great auk, and Labrador duck. Very soon it will also be too late to col lect walrus, manatee, fur seal, prong-horn antelope, elk, moose, mountain sheep, and mountain goat. All along the Atlantic coast and in Florida the ducks are being exterminated for the metropolitan markets, and the gulls, terns, herons, egrets, ibises, and spoonbills are being slaughtered wholesale for the equally bloodthirsty goddess of Fashion. If the naturalist would gather representatives of all these forms for perpetual preservation, and future study, he must set about it at once.
