Book excerpt: The general labour and employment laws of many countries do not necessarily take into account the special circumstances of those who work in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors, whereas legislation governing these sectors tends not to integrate appropriate labour standards. This becomes even more of a concern where there is a general weakness in inter-sectoral and inter-institutional coordination mechanisms. This Legislative Study seeks to respond to these challenges by providing guidance on the integration of internationally accepted labour standards into national legislation in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors. It identifies the standards that apply to these sectors and shows how they have been or could be integrated into regulatory frameworks governing organic production and other agricultural commodities, contract farming, pesticide management, forestry, fisheries and other related sectors. The overall aim of the study is to improve relevant regulatory frameworks with regard to the protection of the rights of people who derive their livelihoods in these sectors.

As the conditions of forestry work change, so does the nature of the work-related risks. Despite efforts and improvements made over the past few decades, forests continue to be one of the most hazardous industrial workplaces, with those working in forests exposed to considerable occupational safety and health (OSH) risks as well as to a high incidence of occupational accidents and work-related diseases. In view of recent transformations in forestry work, and taking into account the recent inclusion of a safe and healthy working environment in the ILO’s framework of fundamental principles and rights at work, this report identifies trends and opportunities as well as challenges to promote safe and healthy working conditions in the forest sector. It contributes to understanding the importance of decent and sustainable work in forestry, with the objective of informing the design and implementation of policies and training programmes to advance a just transition in forestry following the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly Sustainable Development Goals 8 on decent work and economic growth and 15 on life on land. This report has been produced jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

The vegetation specifications address site preparation, plant material acquisition, transport, handling, and storage of seeds, herbs, and saplings, planting methods for various stock types, different seeding methods, tiring of planting in conjunction with seasonal variations, hydrological considerations such as tidal cycle, water level and rainfall patterns, equipment access and type, protection measures for herbivory, inundation and vandalism, fertilization and amendrnent application, soil-nutrient testing, substrate handling, trppsport, and storage and minimization of impacts on existing wetland resources. The subgrade specifications target construction methods and equipment, soil-material testing, and performance.
