Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial Guide to Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington: With Description of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad N ot content with the mischief that they had already done the enterprise, they appealed to the people with all the venom and bitterness of confirmed monomaniacs, through falsely presenting the statistics of other exhi bitions of a similar character, which they claimed had been, without a single exception, a financial failure and a ruinous project, though under the management of more matured and wealthier governments, which failure proved conclusively that our Utopian scheme must in evitably end likewise. Again, they endeavored to deaden the undertaking by creating dissension among the orig inators and dissatisfaction among the rival cities - who were anxious for the honor, by claiming advantages for each in derogation of the others - thus pitting city against city, clogging the wheels and stopping the ma chinery; but by persevering efforts and convincing ar guments on the part of the active movers in the under taking, and by the power of a mighty press, the grum blings of the dissatisfied few soon ceased, and their prejudiced fulmmations no longer harassed the pro ceedings of the Commissioners, who were thus enabled to pursue their course in harmony and peace, supported by the popular voice, and encouraged by the notice taken of their efforts by foreign nations, who seemed to be affected as enthusiasticallv as our own people over the Exhibition i; embryo. Download or read book Steam City written by David Schley and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone interested in the rise of American corporate capitalism should look to the streets of Baltimore. There, in 1827, citizens launched a bold new venture: a “rail-road” that would link their city with the fertile Ohio River Valley. They dubbed this company the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O), and they conceived of it as a public undertaking—an urban improvement, albeit one that would stretch hundreds of miles beyond the city limits. Steam City tells the story of corporate capitalism starting from the street and moving outward, looking at how the rise of the railroad altered the fabric of everyday life in the United States. The B&O’s founders believed that their new line would remap American economic geography, but no one imagined that the railroad would also dramatically reshape the spaces of its terminal city. As railroad executives wrangled with city officials over their use of urban space, they formulated new ideas about the boundaries between public good and private profit. Ultimately, they reinvented the B&O as a private enterprise, unmoored to its home city. This bold reconception had implications not only for the people of Baltimore, but for the railroad industry as a whole. As David Schley shows here, privatizing the B&O helped set the stage for the rise of the corporation as a major force in the post-Civil War economy. ?Steam City examines how the birth and spread of the American railroad—which brought rapid communications, fossil fuels, and new modes of corporate organization to the city—changed how people worked, where they lived, even how they crossed the street. As Schley makes clear, we still live with the consequences of this spatial and economic order today.

Book Baltimore Ohio Railroad in Maryland The

Download or read book Baltimore Ohio Railroad in Maryland The written by David Shackelford and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporated in 1827, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad was one of America's first railroads, and Maryland was its heart and soul. The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad's (B&O) creation was a tangible symbol of the Industrial Revolution, representing commerce and progress to towns along its route. Its headquarters and operations, centered in Baltimore, provided years of economic growth for the port city. This book contains images of well-known stations in Maryland, including Ellicott City Station, Gaithersburg Station, Camden Station, and the Mount Clare Shops--a self-contained industrial city, now home to the B&O Railroad Museum. Some stations still exist and are home to small museums or restaurants; others no longer stand, but images of them will remind even the casual historian of a time when railroads were a part of everyday life in America. Take a step back in time and revisit the sites, stations, and trains of the B&O that were once part of everyday life in Maryland and remember the glory of a bygone era.
