Download or read book Amateur Musical Societies and Sports Clubs in Provincial France 1848 1914 written by Alan R. H. Baker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-14 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores leisure-related voluntary associations in France during the nineteenth century as practical expressions of the Revolutionary concept of fraternité. Using a mass of unpublished sources in provincial and national archives, it analyses the history, geography and cultural significance of amateur musical societies and sports clubs in eleven départements of France between 1848 and 1914. It demonstrates that, although these voluntary associations drew upon and extended the traditional concept of cooperation and community, and the Revolutionary concept of fraternity, they also incorporated the fundamental characteristics of competition and conflict. Although intended to produce social harmony, in practice they reflected the ideological hostilities and cultural tensions that permeated French society in the nineteenth century.

Download or read book Alcohol Sex and Gender in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe written by L. Martin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-01-19 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines drinking and attitudes to alcohol consumption in late medieval and early modern England, France, and Italy, especially as they related to sexual and violent behavior and to gender relations. According to widespread beliefs, the consumption of alcohol led to increased sexual activity among both men and women, and it also led to disorderly conduct among women and violent conduct among men. Dr Lynn shows how alcohol was a fundamental part of the diets of most people, including women, resulting in daily drinking of large amounts of ale, beer, or wine. This study offers an intimate insight into both the altered states induced by alcohol, and, by opposition, into normal relations in family, community, and society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experts from around the world examine an innovative proposal to promote both cultural survival and biological conservation: treating cultural and indigenous knowledge as a form of intellectual property. Currently the focus of a heated debate among indigenous peoples, human rights advocates, crop breeders, pharmaceutical companies, conservationists, social scientists, and lawyers, the proposal would allow impoverished people in biologically rich areas to realize an economic return from resources under their care. Monetary compensation could both validate their knowledge and provide them with an equitable reward for sharing it, thereby compensating biological stewardship and encouraging conservation."Valuing Local Knowledge" presents case studies of programs that recognize indigenous rights, and brings direct experience to bear on the international debate over intellectual property, conservation, and indigenous rights.

Download or read book The Wine Revolution in France written by Leo A. Loubere and published by . This book was released on 2014-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past eight decades French vineyards, wineries, and wine marketing efforts have undergone such profound changes--from technological, scientific, economic, and commercial standpoints--that the transformation is revolutionary for an industry dating back thousands of years. Here Leo Loubre examines how the modernization of Western society has brought about new conditions in well-established markets, making the introduction of novel techniques and processes a matter of survival for winegrowers. Not only does Loubre explain how altered environmental conditions have enabled pioneering enologists to create styles of wine more suited to contemporary tastes and living arrangements, but he also discusses the social impact of the wine revolution on the employees in the industry. The third generation of this new viticultural regime has encountered working and living conditions drastically different from those of its predecessors, while witnessing the near disappearance of the working class and the decline of small and medium growers of ordinary wines. Download or read book The History of Wine as a Medicine written by Philip Norrie and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-02 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book is the first to describe mankinds 5,000 year history of using wine as a medicine. Wine is our oldest, most documented and best preventative medicine. It reduces the rate of death from all causes by up to 50% by minimising vascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes by up to 50% and dementia by up to 80%. This text rewrites the history of wine by showing that the first grape wine was actually made in China and not Georgia, as current theory suggests. It contains a unique detailed chronology of wine as a medicine from 9,500 years ago in China until today. It also details some interesting stories about wine, such as its use to help keep convicts alive during their long voyage to Australia, its use in Australian lunatic asylums, Australias many Wine Doctors such as Penfold and Lindeman, and the American Presidents who championed wine. The book also contains a chapter on one of the main health components of wine, namely resveratrol; written by Professor Joseph Maroon, the famous American neurosurgeon for the American NFL who is an expert on concussion injuries and a great advocate for the use of resveratrol to delay the aging process. It shows that the best way to absorb resveratrol is as a liquid via the buccal mucosa or lining of the mouth and not as pills or capsules. That is why it is best to swirl wine around in your mouth for a minute or two before swallowing it, to absorb more resveratrol.

Download or read book Causality and Modern Science written by Mario Bunge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The causal problem has become topical once again. While we are no longer causalists or believers in the universal truth of the causal principle we continue to think of causes and effects, as well as of causal and noncausal relations among them. Instead of becoming indeterminists we have enlarged determinism to include noncausal categories. And we are still in the process of characterizing our basic concepts and principles concerning causes and effects with the help of exact tools. This is because we want to explain, not just describe, the ways of things. The causal principle is not the only means of understanding the world but it is one of them. The demand for a fourth edition of this distinguished book on the subject of causality is clear evidence that this principle continues to be an important and popular area of philosophic enquiry. Non-technical and clearly written, this book focuses on the ontological problem of causality, with specific emphasis on the place of the causal principle in modern science. Mario Bunge first defines the terminology employed and describes various formulations of the causal principle. He then examines the two primary critiques of causality, the empiricist and the romantic, as a prelude to the detailed explanation of the actual assertions of causal determinism.Bunge analyzes the function of the causal principle in science, touching on such subjects as scientific law, scientific explanation, and scientific prediction. In so doing, he offers an education to layman and specialist alike on the history of a concept and its opponents. Professor William A. Wallace, author of Causality and Scientific Explanation said of an earlier edition of this work: "I regard it as a truly seminal work in this field."
