Download or read book Smaller Quicker Cheaper written by Daniel A. Wagner and published by United Nations Education, Scientific & Cultural Organization. This book was released on 2011 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effective use of educational assessments is fundamental to improving learning. However, effective use does not refer only to the technical parameters or statistical methodologies. Learning assessments in use todaywhether large-scale or household surveys or hybrid (smaller, quicker, cheaper or SQC)have varied uses and purposes. The present volume provides a review of learning assessments, their status in terms of the empirical knowledge base, and some new ideas for improving their effectiveness, particularly for those children most in need. It is argued here that SQC learning assessments have the potential to enhance educational accountability, increase transparency, and support a greater engagement of stakeholders with an interest in improving learning. In addition, countries need a sustained policy to guide assessment choices, including a focus on poor and marginalized populations.
Download or read book Eight Myths of Student Disengagement written by Jennifer A. Fredricks and published by Corwin Press. This book was released on 2014-03-18 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many teachers report that student disengagement is one of the biggest challenges they encounter in the classroom, and research shows that there is a steady decline in students' engagement that begins as early as kindergarten and persists through the transitions to middle and high school. Young children are naturally curious and want to learn and explore, but unfortunately this all too often gives way to a lack of participation and effort, acting out and disrupting class, disaffection and withdrawal, and failure to deeply invest in academic content. Jennifer Fredricks's book goes beyond the idea that classroom management techniques and on-task behaviour ensure student engagement, to consider the emotional and cognitive dimensions that are critical for deeper learning and student achievement. Fredricks presents compelling strategies based on the research to demonstrate how instructional tasks, teacher-student relations, and peer dynamics all play a pivotal role in cultivating lasting student engagement.

Chapters cover not only particular applications of the instrument but also put EGRA in the context of broader issues and developments in literacy and education.
Download or read book Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics written by Liping Ma and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-03-26 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of teachers in the U.S. often document insufficient subject matter knowledge in mathematics. Yet, these studies give few examples of the knowledge teachers need to support teaching, particularly the kind of teaching demanded by recent reforms in mathematics education. Knowing and Teaching Elementary Mathematics describes the nature and development of the knowledge that elementary teachers need to become accomplished mathematics teachers, and suggests why such knowledge seems more common in China than in the United States, despite the fact that Chinese teachers have less formal education than their U.S. counterparts. The anniversary edition of this bestselling volume includes the original studies that compare U.S and Chinese elementary school teachers’ mathematical understanding and offers a powerful framework for grasping the mathematical content necessary to understand and develop the thinking of school children. Highlighting notable changes in the field and the author’s work, this new edition includes an updated preface, introduction, and key journal articles that frame and contextualize this seminal work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Counter Responsibility for planning language teaching programs now carries with it a strong element of accountability. Evaluation of the whole process of course design, development, and implementation is therefore a necessary area of activity for course designers, language planners, and researchers. This book brings together accounts of recent work in this increasingly important field and will be a valuable resource both for those already engaged in evaluation and for those in training. Part One presents a review of the literature, covering past developments in the wider field of educational evaluation, as well as specifically in second language education. Part Two contains a series of eight original case-studies, written by scholars involved in evaluations in widely divergent settings. The focus in each case is on how the evaluator addresses the difficulties central to each study, and the findings are also included. The final Part Three provides practical guidance for evaluators, offering suggestions about how to set up and carry out evaluations in any given setting."--Publisher's website.
