Since the late 1990s, the National Endowment for the Arts, under the direction of Mark Robbins, has been promoting design excellence through an ambitious series of symposia, best-case design studies, and prototype projects. The results of these programs are now documented in a new series of publications, each focusing on design in the public realm and the potential for innovative architecture, landscape architecture, and planning.

Book Designing Planned Communities

Download or read book Designing Planned Communities written by Daniel R. Mandelker and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Designing Planned Communities is a clear statement of the design issues that are critical to creating livable and well-designed planned communities. Professor Mandelker draws on his long experience with planned community and land use regulation to explain the meaning of good design for planned communities. He shows how design concepts for planned communities can be translated into effective design guidance by local governments. Examples of design standards are provided from comprehensive plans, design guidelines, design manuals, and planned community regulations. Throughout Designing Planned Communities, the reader is taken through the complex problems of design regulation to an effective design program that can create planned communities in which we want to live. Planners and lawyers will be interested in what Mandelker has to say about the design issues facing a growing number of planned communities throughout the country. Planning and local government attorneys will find the information about the legality of innovative design plans most interesting and helpful. Mandelker provides examples of localities that have experimented with a variety of design approaches and explores case law that will have an impact on these innovations." -Michael Allan Wolf, Professor & Richard E. Nelson Chair in Local Government Law, University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law

Book Community By Design New Urbanism for Suburbs and Small Communities

Download or read book Community By Design New Urbanism for Suburbs and Small Communities written by Kenneth B. Hall, Jr. and published by McGraw Hill Professional. This book was released on 2001-04-02 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 50% of Americans live in suburban and exurban communities, and populations are increasing as more people seek green spaces, better access to education, retirement living, and homeownership. Yet these communities, with smaller budgets and no long-term growth planning, are unprepared for the problems - traffic congestion, poor air quality, and strip malls, to name a few - that are now plaguing them. Community by Design, authored by two specialists in suburban and exurban design and development, shows how to apply good planning practices to these smaller communities.

Book Design Guidelines in American Cities

Download or read book Design Guidelines in American Cities written by John Punter and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of design initiatives and policies in five US West Coast cities -- Seattle (including Bellevue), Portland, San Francisco, Irvine and San Diego--all of which have had particularly interesting urban design experience of relevance to practice in Britain and other countries.Although these cities are not a representative sample of all American design practice, they provide a rich vein of ideas about recent policy development and current initiatives which will stimulate thought about the formulation of effective design controls. The presentation of substantial extracts from key documents that underpin design controls in the five cities will be of interest, inspiration and practical use to academics and practitioners who want to know more about American practice and who want to contribute to improvements in the standards and quality of urban design policies and design control. The opening chapter provides a national context and a comparative framework for the study, with a focus on international perspectives, American planning systems and the development of criteria for comparison and evaluation. The five subsequentchapters take each city in turn, briefly reviewing the salient characteristics of each one before presenting an account of how planning and design policy have evolved in the last twenty-five years; key features of the contemporary systems of design control are highlighted and a summary evaluation is made. The focus in the case studies is on how policy and guidance have been formulated, structured and presented in the various documents that make up the policy framework, how the process of control operates, and how both respond to the criticisms commonly made of design and control. This final chapter draws general conclusions about the experience of the studied cities of wider relevance to American design review practice, but which are of interest to those engaged in design review and policy formulation everywhere.
