Book excerpt: This book is written for the purpose of giving our clients some ideas of the fundamental principles that guide us when we select stocks for them to buy, but these principles are valuable to every person who trades in listed stocks or in any other kind of speculative stocks. First of all, we want you to get a clear conception of the meaning of the word speculation, which is explained in the next chapter. Our purpose is to protect you against losses as well as to enable you to make profits, and it is very important that you understand how to provide for safety in your speculating. It is a well known fact that there are tremendous losses in stock speculation, but we claim that almost all of these losses would be avoided if all speculators were guided by the principles expounded in this book. "What" and "When" are two very important words in stock speculation, and we cannot urge upon you too strongly to study carefully Chapters V. to IX. Chapters X. to XV. tell you much about the influences that affect the prices of stocks, a knowledge of which should also be a guide to you in making your selections. Perhaps the most important chapter in the entire book is XXV., on Market Information. A careful reading of this chapter should convince you that much of the prevailing information about the stock market is misleading. That fact alone accounts for many of the losses in stock speculation. It has been our aim to state all facts briefly. What to do in cases like these? Is it time to invest, sell everything or wait? The market downturns are always annoying, they come when you least expect it and they see mal most obvious and unavoidable, with the benefit of hindsight. But the truth is that we all wish we had sold everything on the eve of a drop in prices to buy back later at lower prices. "Highlighting by the author" In this book you will learn a proven method which comes from years of study of the most successful traders, to whom they have put their training in the stock markets at my disposal, and especially how to deal with both the best times to invest and the worst. In this book nothing is left to chance and the main causes of failure in this business are also analyzed, and what to do when the markets go down and how to recognize a trend reversal from a correction. Like any business, also the choices made in managing your own and investing are dictated by our ideas and are therefore subject to the risk that those ideas are fallacious. The assumptions of economics is that man is a perfectly rational being who is able to accurately assess each situation and then calculate which action in that context ensures maximum profit with the lower risk. In actual fact, however, when it comes to Investing, there is often asymmetric information, i.e. no information is available that is necessary for a truly considered choice. In this case, investment choices can be dictated by infatuation rather than a correct idea based on all the relevant information. Book The Physician s Guide to Investing

Download or read book The Physician s Guide to Investing written by Robert M. Doroghazi and published by Humana Press. This book was released on 2005-07-25 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I met Bob Doroghazi when he dropped the first draft of his manuscript of The Physician’s Guide to Investing: A Practical Approach to Building Wealth at my office. I will have to admit I was a bit skeptical: a physician writing a book on investments? During that first meeting with Bob, it became evident that he had been a successful physician and a successful investor, so I agreed to take a look at the book. I was in for a pleasant surprise. Bob’s manuscript was easy to read and had specific advice useful to physicians, interspersed with lots of practical tidbits for any investor. Having written three college-level finance and investment texts, I was excited to be in on a project aimed at offering practical investment advice to a more general, yet specialized, audience. I had high expectations for the book and am pleased to say that I believe Bob has delivered a book that every physician interested in building wealth and protecting assets should read. Bob is a straight shooter; he tells it like he sees it in his book. Some doctors might be indignant on reading his statements, such as “Physicians sometimes have no idea of their limitations. This type of arrogance and ego can result in investing disaster.” However, if you do have these limitations (and most professionals, even college professors, do), then reading Bob’s book will help you recognize situations in which they can lead to poor investment decisions.
