Book excerpt: According to Humboldt Area Foundation (HAF), Humboldt County is home to over 800 nonprofit agencies. Each of these nonprofit agencies, by law, must be governed by a board of directors. These boards are made up of community volunteers who are passionate about their nonprofit’s mission and vision. Some of these volunteers are, however, novices at nonprofit board governance, despite the importance of this role. Key components in the education of board members are: the board manual and a complete and thorough board orientation and training. This project consisted of two parts. The objective of the first part of this community project was to create a guide, to be housed in the HAF nonprofit library, that provides a foundation for Humboldt County nonprofit boards in the revision and creation of both a board manual, and an orientation and training program. The guide was created using one-to-one qualitative interviews with local nonprofit board members, and the review of current resources and literature on relevant board topics. The objective of the second part of the project consisted of using the generic guide, and working in conjunction with the Humboldt Area Center for Harm Reduction (HACHR) cofounders, I assisted in the creation of a basic manual and bylaws specific to HACHR, and I created a series of short developmental moments to be used by the HACHR board.
