Book excerpt: This is an expositional Bible study and devotional guide on 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus. A careful reading, study, meditation, and application of scripture will enable readers to "grow in the knowledge and grace of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ", 2 Peter 3:18. 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus are Paul's pastoral epistle. These are the very late writings of the apostle Paul and contain important teachings on pastoral leadership, Christian conduct, and relationships, countering heretic teachers, and early Gnosticism. These are very applicable to our modern church because there are many false teachers and prophets who preach corrupt doctrines today. Dr. Andrew C S Koh has given a clear background and simple explanations of every passage in 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus. At the end of each lesson, he gives a devotional application and prayer. There are 3 chapters and 16 lessons so you can use this study guide as 16 Bible Studies over 16 weeks. Any student who goes through this study guide carefully will gain a good foundational understanding of 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus.

Book Sacra Pagina The Pastoral Epistles

Download or read book Sacra Pagina The Pastoral Epistles written by Benjamin Fiore and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First and Second Timothy and Titus have for many years borne the collective title The Pastoral Epistles." Both their style and their content make it difficult to locate them within the corpus of Pauline letters, and recent scholarship most often considers them pseudonymous, works that imitate Paul's letters but apply the apostle's teaching to the concerns of a later time, two or more decades after Paul's death. The Pastorals differ from Paul's own letters in being addressed to single individuals, coworkers of Paul who have been placed in charge of particular churches 'Timothy apparently in Ephesus, Titus in Crete. They provide instruction for community leaders, both the individual addressees and other leaders whom they will appoint. The specification of certain offices within the local churches is one of the features that appear to locate these works in a later phase of church development. In this commentary Benjamin Fiore, SJ, places the Pastorals in their historical and literary context. The reader will find here a solid introduction to parallel literary forms in Latin and Greek literature and particular descriptions of the way in which these documents use ancient rhetorical forms to achieve their paraenetic and hortatory purpose. Drawing on his parish experience as well as his academic training, Fiore also provides reflections on the contemporary pastoral application of these books, giving readers a renewed appreciation for the "pastoral" label these epistles bear. Benjamin Fiore, SJ, is president and professor of religious studies at Campion College at the University of Regina (Canada).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a lengthy period during which scholars paid relatively little attention to the Pastoral Epistles, a spate of studies has suddenly appeared in print. However, except for a small number of commentaries, critical scholars have by and large neglected evangelical scholarship on these letters. To fill in this gap, this volume offers a collection of important essays written by evangelicals on 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus. The book aims to inform readers of the history of scholarship on these letters and examine thoroughly Paul’s theology in the Pastoral Epistles. Contributors include several scholars who have done previous advanced work on these letters: I. Howard Marshall (University of Aberdeen, Scotland; Recent Study in the Pastoral Epistles), Andreas Köstenberger (Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary[SEBTS]; Hermeneutical and Exegetical Challenges), Terry L. Wilder (B&H Publishing Group; Authorship), F. Alan Tomlinson (Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary [MBTS]; Purpose/Stewardship), Greg Couser (Cedarville University; Doctrine of God), Daniel L. Akin (SEBTS; Christology), Ray van Neste (Union University; Cohesion and Structure of the PE), B. Book The Captivity and the Pastoral Epistles

Download or read book The Captivity and the Pastoral Epistles written by James Strachan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Captivity and the Pastoral Epistles: With Introduction and Notes With many differences of detail there is a marked similarity of style in the four Epistles of the Roman Imprisonment. They are less fiery and impetuous than those of the earlier groups. They breathe a more tranquil spirit. Their logic is not so remorseless. They are more tender and meditative. They are pervaded by a more cheerful optimism, a more serene and joyful confidence. If the epistles of the first and second groups re semble the flush of dawn and the fervour of midday, those of the third group suggest the mellow loveliness of afternoon, and those of the fourth the peace of evening. The change in style reflects the change in the writer's outward conditions. Paul the restless traveller and missionary is forced at last to sit still. For four or five years he seems to be doomed to a life of tedious inaction. And Paul the prisoner already begins to feel that he is Paul the aged. But how wise was the providence which gave the man of enterprise a season of quiet reflection! There were two long pauses in Paul's strenuous life as a Christian, the one at the beginning, the other at the end of his career, and the world owes more than it knows to the Arabian desert and the Roman prison.
